ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
Having successfully formed a party, we immediately decided to take on a mission. Within the academy grounds, there was a facility where missions could be commissioned. At the center of the building stood a bulletin board, covered with various request notices.
There were extermination missions for monsters and bandits, as well as escort duties for cargo-laden wagons. As for missions with a high difficulty rating, only students who had already gained real combat experience and accumulated many points were permitted to accept them.
“Let’s see… Which mission pays quickly…”
Berga was browsing through the posted requests as she said that.
“Nee-san, how about this one?”
Frau fixed her gaze on a single request sheet. Its color was different from the others.
“A bandit subjugation mission, huh. But why is the notice a different color?”
“Apparently, it’s because the urgency level is high. Since it requires immediate resolution, the reward is set higher if it’s completed.”
“That is a pretty good sum. With this, I should be able to make it through the rest of the month.”
“Then let’s go with that.”
I agreed.
“Sophia-san, is that acceptable to you?”
Frau asked.
“It’s a bit high-difficulty for a first mission for first-years.”
“I have no objections.”
Sophia nodded.
“If the urgency is high, that means there are people suffering right now. We should resolve it as quickly as possible.”
She really had a strong sense of justice.
“Then it’s decided.”
We peeled the request sheet off the board and brought it to the reception desk. It was accepted without any issues. After completing the paperwork, we immediately headed for the site. Once we left the academy grounds, we boarded the cargo bed of a wagon and departed toward our destination.
Outside the academy, gil could not be used. Transportation costs for the trip there and back would be paid later by the Knight Academy to the driver, so we didn’t need to pay a single coin ourselves.
“But man, staying overnight on a mission really gets me fired up.”
As the wagon rocked along, Berga said excitedly.
“Our class attendance gets excused during that time too. It’s nothing but upsides.”
The destination for this mission was far from the royal capital where the academy was located. No matter how quickly we completed the mission, a same-day return was impossible.
“I’m happy I get to stay by Nee-san’s side the whole time too.”
“You two, this isn’t a field trip.”
Sophia said sharply, tightening the mood.
“This is real combat, unlike the mock battles at the Knight Academy. If you let your guard down, you could lose your life.”
In mock battles, losing didn’t mean losing your life, but real combat was different. There were plenty of students who never returned after failing a mission. The wagon that departed the royal capital after classes arrived at the destination village two days later. It was a small village with a mountain rising behind it.
After explaining the situation to the female gate guards, they opened the main gate for us. When we climbed down from the wagon bed, soldiers came out to greet us.
“We’ve been expecting you. We’ll guide you to the village chief.”
At that point, the soldiers’ gazes suddenly stopped on me.
“And who is this man?”
“He’s a student of the Knight Academy, just like us.”
The soldiers exchanged glances, their expressions turning dubious. They clearly hadn’t imagined that a man would be coming.
“Anyway, this way. The village chief is waiting.”
As we walked through the village, all the villagers stared at us. They whispered among themselves while looking at me.
“Look, it’s a man.”
“Why is a man wearing a Knight Academy uniform?”
“Isn’t he just a caretaker for the other girls?”
As expected, being a man made me stand out.
“But wow… He’s got a pretty lewd body, doesn’t he…♡”
“Looks like he’s got something bigger than my husband…♡”
“I’d let him put it in, even if it’s just the tip…♡”
I was stared at intently the entire time we walked. Eventually, we arrived at the largest house in the village. It was a single-story home with a thatched roof. We stepped inside. At the back of the great hall stood the village chief, accompanied by her attendants.
“Members of the Knight Academy, thank you for coming all this way.”
The village chief was a woman. She looked to be in her late thirties. Dressed in lavish clothing, she had a youthful, well-groomed appearance.
“We heard that the village was attacked by bandits.”
Sophia said, getting straight to the point.
“Yes. They attacked the village and took young men, children, and our food supplies. We managed to drive them off once, but many were injured in the process… Taking advantage of that, they issued further demands. They told us to hand over all the men remaining in the village and every last coin we have. If we refuse, they will attack again and slaughter everyone. We no longer have the strength to repel them. Whether we comply or not, all that awaits us is ruin.”
“And that’s why you requested aid from the Knight Academy.”
“Exactly. It was a gamble whether help would arrive in time. But I’m glad you made it. Please, lend us your strength.”
“Of course.”
Sophia replied.
“On behalf of the Knight Academy, we will protect this village without fail.”
“Thank you.”
The village chief bowed deeply.
“However, there’s something that’s been troubling me… Why is that man wearing a Knight Academy uniform?”
“That’s because—”
I began to answer, but…
“He is also a student of the Knight Academy, just like us.”
Sophia answered in my place.
“A man… At the Knight Academy?”
The room began to murmur.
“…Men aren’t useful in combat.”
“…Did they look down on us and send us some weakling?”
The attendants whispered disparagingly, anxiety clear in their voices.
“…What did you say?”
Berga’s eyes sharpened instantly. She was clearly furious. She started to rise from her seat, ready to chew them out. At that moment…
A hand reached out from the side and stopped her. It was Sophia. Turning toward the attendants, Sophia spoke clearly and firmly.
“He may be a man, but he possesses undeniable strength. He is no less capable than any of us. As the top-ranked first-year, I guarantee it.”
Her eyes were unwavering. Her tone was powerful and without pretense.
“Ugh…”
The attendants shrank back, intimidated.
“…We sincerely apologize,” the village chief said, bowing deeply to us. “Please forgive their rudeness.”
The head of a village bowing to a man… In this world, that took resolve.
“Please, raise your head.”
I addressed the village chief.
“With the village in such dire straits, it’s understandable.”
“Thank you for your generosity…”
After murmuring that quietly, the village chief continued.
“Please, lend us your strength for the sake of this village.”
“Of course.”
Once I accept a mission, I see it through to the end. That is my motto.
