Chapter 32: Arriving at the Village

Having successfully formed a party, we immediately decided to take on a mission. Within the academy grounds, there was a facility where missions could be commissioned. At the center of the building stood a bulletin board, covered with various request notices.

There were extermination missions for monsters and bandits, as well as escort duties for cargo-laden wagons. As for missions with a high difficulty rating, only students who had already gained real combat experience and accumulated many points were permitted to accept them.

“Let’s see… Which mission pays quickly…”

Berga was browsing through the posted requests as she said that.

“Nee-san, how about this one?”

Frau fixed her gaze on a single request sheet. Its color was different from the others.

“A bandit subjugation mission, huh. But why is the notice a different color?”

“Apparently, it’s because the urgency level is high. Since it requires immediate resolution, the reward is set higher if it’s completed.”

“That is a pretty good sum. With this, I should be able to make it through the rest of the month.”

“Then let’s go with that.” 

I agreed.

“Sophia-san, is that acceptable to you?” 

Frau asked. 

“It’s a bit high-difficulty for a first mission for first-years.”

“I have no objections.”

Sophia nodded.

“If the urgency is high, that means there are people suffering right now. We should resolve it as quickly as possible.”

She really had a strong sense of justice.

“Then it’s decided.”

We peeled the request sheet off the board and brought it to the reception desk. It was accepted without any issues. After completing the paperwork, we immediately headed for the site. Once we left the academy grounds, we boarded the cargo bed of a wagon and departed toward our destination.

Outside the academy, gil could not be used. Transportation costs for the trip there and back would be paid later by the Knight Academy to the driver, so we didn’t need to pay a single coin ourselves.

“But man, staying overnight on a mission really gets me fired up.”

As the wagon rocked along, Berga said excitedly.

Sophia said sharply, tightening the mood.

The wagon that departed the royal capital after classes arrived at the destination village two days later. It was a small village with a mountain rising behind it.

After explaining the situation to the female gate guards, they opened the main gate for us. When we climbed down from the wagon bed, soldiers came out to greet us.

“We’ve been expecting you. We’ll guide you to the village chief.”

“He’s a student of the Knight Academy, just like us.”

“We heard that the village was attacked by bandits.” 

Sophia said, getting straight to the point.

“Yes. They attacked the village and took young men, children, and our food supplies. We managed to drive them off once, but many were injured in the process… Taking advantage of that, they issued further demands. They told us to hand over all the men remaining in the village and every last coin we have. If we refuse, they will attack again and slaughter everyone. We no longer have the strength to repel them. Whether we comply or not, all that awaits us is ruin.”

“And that’s why you requested aid from the Knight Academy.”

“Exactly. It was a gamble whether help would arrive in time. But I’m glad you made it. Please, lend us your strength.”

“Of course.” 

Sophia replied.

“On behalf of the Knight Academy, we will protect this village without fail.”

“Thank you.”

The village chief bowed deeply.
