ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
After finishing the tonkotsu ramen from the food stall, Berga and I were walking back toward the dorms. On Berga’s back was Frau, clinging to her with a pained expression on her face.
“…Urgh. I ate too much.”
For her small body, an extra-large serving with every topping piled on had apparently been too much. After finishing, she was so full she couldn’t move a single step.
“…I-I feel sick… blegh…”
“Idiot. Just because it was free doesn’t mean you should’ve gone that wild.”
Berga said so in an exasperated tone. After a short while, we arrived at the dorms. The Straiga sisters were in the same North Dorm as me. Incidentally, it seemed the sisters had separate rooms. Frau was apparently quite dissatisfied with that.
“Jeez. What a high-maintenance little sister.”
After carrying Frau inside and stepping out of the room, Berga cracked her stiff shoulders and spoke.
“Thanks for today. That was a good meal.”
“Yeah.”
And then, after a brief pause…
“And hey, don’t let it get to you.”
“What do you mean?”
“You’ve been hearing all kinds of crap lately, right? Like how paying ten thousand gil gets you laid.”
“Ah, that.”
“I’m sure it’s just a bunch of jealous assholes spreading rumors however they like. And then other people just swallow it whole. There’s no way Kreto would do something like that.”
Berga was openly seething with anger.
“If anyone says something again, tell me. I’ll knock their lights out. I won’t forgive anyone who spreads bad rumors about my buddy.”
“…About that….” I began. “The rumor is true.”
“…Huh?”
In that instant, the world seemed to freeze. Berga’s eyes went wide, unfocused.
“…Sorry. Maybe I misheard you. What did you just say?”
“The rumor is true.”
I said it again, clearly.
“The rumors circulating around the academy aren’t baseless lies.”
“…For real?”
“For real.”
I affirmed it.
“At first, just like you said, it was a groundless rumor someone spread however they liked. But I decided to go along with it. So in the end, it became true.”
“…Ah—uh…”
Berga scratched her head roughly.
“…I’m still having trouble processing this. So, uh… You’re saying you actually sleep with whoever pays the ten thousand gil?”
“That’s right.”
“…Damn.”
Berga stood there, stunned. It must have been completely unexpected. Her face tinged with a faint shade of red.
“…I mean, why’d you tell me? That’s not exactly easy to admit. You could’ve just played dumb, couldn’t you?”
“Since the rumor is true, it was only a matter of time before the truth came out anyway.”
And then I continued.
“You were genuinely angry on my behalf. Seeing that, I thought I owed it to you to tell you the truth.”
That was how I truly felt. Berga was a rare person in this academy. She was someone who treated me, a man, as an equal. I didn’t feel right continuing to deceive someone like that. If she learned the truth, she might be completely put off and our relationship could fall apart. Even so, I told her. It was my way of showing sincerity.
“Do you despise me now?”
“…Nah. I mean, I was surprised, sure. But if you’re going that far, doesn’t that mean you’ve got your own reasons?”
“You’re giving me way too much credit,” I laughed. “Maybe it’s just because I like sex and I get money out of it.”
“Nope. I can tell. You’re not that shallow. There’s gotta be a proper reason.”
Berga stared straight at me. There was conviction in her gaze. No half-baked excuse would convince her. Trying to be deliberately cynical like I’d done with Sophia would be pointless too.
Yeah. It’s not like I’d lose anything by telling her. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to talk about it.
“…Can you promise not to tell anyone else?”
“Yeah. A woman never goes back on her word.”
We decided to move somewhere else. We went to a plaza with a fountain a short distance away from the dorms. After sitting down on a bench and confirming no one else was around, I explained the skill I possessed.
“So basically, by sleeping with someone, you can take in part of their magical power. And since the rumors were convenient for gaining power efficiently, you used them.”
“Yeah.”
“…I see. In that case, I can understand why you’d take such a risky path.”
After hearing everything, Berga nodded, clearly convinced.
“Now it makes sense. Why you, a guy, could keep up with us women in terms of magic power. You were increasing your mana through your skill.”
“That’s right.”
I continued.
“But regardless, the fact remains that I was taking money and having relationships with female students. That doesn’t change. It’s okay for you to despise me.”
“Despise you? No way.”
Berga brushed it off immediately.
“You were ready to drink muddy water if it meant becoming a knight, right? I’m not gonna laugh at someone who has a strong resolve like that.”
And then she added.
“One fight is all it takes to know. Your swordsmanship doesn’t rely solely on your skill. It’s the kind that comes from relentless, blood-soaked training day after day.”
I had been sure she’d look at me differently. But Berga’s attitude didn’t change. If anything…
“Alright. If that’s how it is, I’ll help you too.”
“…What did you say?”
“You get stronger by sleeping with women, right? Then if you sleep with me, you’ll get even stronger, right?”
Berga said it as if she’d just come up with a brilliant idea.
“That’s true,” I said, “But… Are you sure?”
She was saying something outrageous.
“You trusted me enough to tell me about your skill. So as your buddy, I wanna step up and help too.”
No, no. Saying “step up” and actually taking off your clothes to sleep with me is going way beyond the bounds of friendship.
I thought that, but I didn’t say it out loud, because it wasn’t a bad offer. Berga possessed some of the highest magical power even among the elite of Class A. If I could gain power from her, I’d be grateful. She was offering it of her own accord. There was no reason to refuse.
“…Alright. If you’re okay with it, I’ll take you up on that.”
“Yeah! Leave it to me!”
Berga thumped her chest and flashed a confident grin. At that moment, she was speaking entirely on impulse…. But I would only come to realize that later.
