Sword Training
Translator: Lioness
Editor: Arya
From today onwards, I’ll be undergoing sword training with Brother Garen and Sister Reicheru.
“Master Resarein will be joining us today, thus, we’ll begin with the basics.”
The one who was teaching me was my father’s butler, Haman-san.
He looked like a fresh, handsome twenty-years-old guy.
“Eh, the actual battle is definitely better than the basics.”
“Foolish brother, Rein is only five years old.”
(TL: Don’t be confused, Rein is Resarein, in case you didn’t understand.)
“How dare you call my brother an idiot?”
“It is worse to be called an idiot.”
The two of them had always been like that.
In the past, my sister used to listen to him obediently, but after she realized that my brother was actually a brainiac, she became like this.
(TL: Brainiac: An exceptionally intelligent person.)
But it seemed that they perceived fighting as a form of communication.
I was also called Rein by my family.
“So, Mr. Garen will spar with me for actual combat. In the meantime, Reicheru-sama, please teach Resarein-sama the basics.”
“I like that.”
“Okay.”
“I’ll take care of it.”
Actual combat training from day one was absolutely ridiculous.
“I’ll start by teaching you how to hold a sword.”
“Okay.”
“Put all your strength into each finger of your hands. Then swing straight. That’s all.”
“Well, sister, is that all?”
“That was it. Now let’s try it.”
I thought there would be more to it than that, but… well, she was just a kid.
So I grabbed the wooden sword and swung it from top to bottom.
My body was blown away.
“… What?”
Thud!
“That’s it!”
“The way you swung it was completely different!”
She said that while swinging the wooden sword towards him.
“Why are you swinging the wooden sword, Sister?”
“Because the way you swung it was completely different.”
It was a hell of a Spartan education.
(TL: The agoge was the ancient Spartan education program, which trained male youths in the arts of war. The word means “raising” in the sense of raising livestock from youth towards a specific purpose. … Spartan girls were not allowed to join but were educated at home by their mothers or trainers.)
What? You’re going to hit me with a wooden sword just because I made a mistake?
Oh no, I’ve lost 10% of my HP now.
I can’t handle my sister’s training, I’d rather have my brother’s actual battle training.
When I thought about it, I tried to escape but…
“Where are you going, Rein?”
She was already ahead of me.
“I was thinking of going to my brother’s field training.”
“You’re not ready for field training, Rein. You must finish the basics first.”
No, I can’t, because I already lost 10% of my HP with only one hit. If I get hit 9 more times, I’ll die.
“No, I still think that actual combat is better than basic combat, I think that actual combat is better for training.”
“Well, if you insist, let’s go do some real combat training.”
When I went to see my brother and Mr. Haman, Mr. Haman was one-sidedly beating up my brother.
No, if you looked closely, you could observe that he was hit, but he didn’t take that much damage.
But Haman was too strong. He still looked like he could handle it, and he hadn’t been attacked once by my brother.
“Who is Mr. Haman?”
“He’s our father’s butler.”
“No, I mean why is he so strong?”
“Because our father made him a Genus.”
(TL: a principal taxonomic category that ranks above species and below family, and is denoted by a capitalized Latin name, e.g. Leo.)
“What, our father made a Genus so strong?”
“Well, it was partly because of his own efforts, but it was also because of his blood.”
I was talking to my sister.
“Well, since Lady Reicheru and Master Resarein are here, shall we stop here?”
“Oh, huh, ok.”
Then Brother Garen collapsed.
“Are you all right, brother?”
“I’m fine. It feels like that every day anyways.”
“What did you say, huh?”
“What happened to Reicheru and Resarein?”
“I came here because Rein said it would be better for him if he trained an actual battle.”
“Very well, then, Master Resarein, shall we begin?”
And then he suddenly cut me!
When I thought I managed to guard the first hit, the trajectory suddenly changed and only the wind pressure of the sword reached my head.
“Haman, why did you suddenly start!?”
“In actual combat, we don’t bother informing the enemy that we were about to aim at them. On the contrary, when we were about to start the actual battle training, I wanted you to cut at me even if Garen-sama and I were in the middle of training. So let’s continue, shall we?”
After that, we trained again and again, and I realized that Haman-san was in a way, more Spartan than my sister.
