Chapter 7: Searching for a Bicycle
“For now, we’ll use Yui’s house as our base.”
“Why?”
After treating Yui with his sacred magic, Hayato outlined his plans for the future.
Yui tilted her head slightly at Hayato’s words.
“If we move you after removing the virus, you’ll be attacked by zombies again.”
“Is that so?”
“At least, that’s how it worked in the other world.”
Whether there was a connection or not was unclear, but it was reminiscent of how one could catch the flu twice. Yui, not wanting to test the possibility of being attacked, accepted the likelihood.
“Yui is more familiar with her own home, and she was able to keep the zombies at bay to some extent. My house had its windows broken, and it had been searched.”
Three zombies had gathered at Yui’s house, but they had managed to prevent an intrusion to some extent.
On the other hand, Hayato’s house had its windows broken, and zombies could enter.
—They even took my manga from my room.
Hayato’s house had been searched thoroughly.
Everything necessary for daily life had been taken.
Therefore, Hayato judged that Yui’s house was much better.
“I see. That’s fine.”
Perhaps Yui hesitated at the idea of sleeping in the same room.
Hayato, sensing a hint of anxiety in Yui’s words, made a suggestion himself.
“I’ll sleep on the first floor. I can deal with zombies.”
“Then, there’s my father’s room.”
Hayato nodded at Yui, who cheerfully offered up her father, and secured a room.
“Then, I’ll go look for some supplies. First, I want a bicycle.”
Hayato considered getting a bicycle as a means of gathering supplies.
Even with his bear-like physical abilities, it was more comfortable to ride a bicycle than to run on foot.
The current Kirigaoka City was not peaceful, so avoiding fatigue was a natural course of action.
“I think there was a bicycle in the school’s bicycle shed that didn’t have a lock on it.”
Perhaps someone’s bicycle had a key left in it.
But Hayato had just returned from the other world, and his sense of ethics had unconsciously made him avoid it.
Now that he thought about it, there was no need to worry about the owner since there were no humans at the school, and instead, zombies were wandering around.
“I have a bicycle, if you want.”
“Yeah, well, of course not.”
Yui’s height was less than 150 centimeters, and she looked like a 6th-grade elementary school student.
On the other hand, Hayato’s height was that of an average Japanese adult male.
The size of the bicycle didn’t match their physiques.
“If you have something to say, go ahead.”
“I’m sorry.”
Hayato apologized, but he didn’t change his plans.
He imagined the station’s bicycle parking lot as a place to get a bicycle.
The nearest Kirigaoka North Station was about 3 kilometers from Yui’s house.
“At the station, there might be someone who forgot to lock their bicycle and took the train, and then couldn’t return to Kirigaoka City.”
Even in peacetime, someone would occasionally forget to lock their bicycle.
If there was a rush due to the zombie incident, wouldn’t they be even more likely to forget to lock their bicycle?
Hayato thought there was likely to be at least one bicycle without a lock.
“Are you okay?”
Hayato casually answered Yui, who asked with concern.
“Bears can run at over 50 kilometers per hour and hunt wild boars. And I have a spear.”
As the tip of the spear he took out shone brightly, Yui showed a look of exasperation.
“Be careful.”
Hayato left Yui’s house and headed for the station.
The city was quiet, and the word “ghost town” crossed Hayato’s mind.
Along the way, he saw multiple cars abandoned on the side of the road, but there were no other obstacles.
“There might have been zombies chasing after me, though.”
Zombies might have seen Hayato from a distance and started chasing him.
But Hayato wasn’t walking to the station; he was jogging.
He might have been going at the same speed as the bicycle he was about to find.
Zombies couldn’t keep up with that speed.
Even if the rear became a large group like a citizens’ marathon, it wouldn’t be a problem as long as they didn’t catch up.
Hayato, who was optimistic, didn’t look back, and he arrived at Kirigaoka North Station without any problems.
Many bicycles were lying on the ground in the station’s bicycle parking lot.
They had been neatly lined up, but a strong wind had knocked them over, or someone had been in a hurry and had ridden off, knocking them over, and no one had fixed them afterward.
Hayato approached the bicycle parking lot and looked down at each fallen bicycle, searching for one with a lock.
“The rear wheel lock can be broken, but the front wheel lock is also connected to it.”
It was faster to look for a bicycle without a lock than to struggle to fix it.
Most of the people who used the station to commute by train were high school students and above, so the bicycles were larger than Yui’s.
Hayato looked around, thinking that if there was a key inserted, it would be fine. Then, he heard groans from behind.
When he turned around, he saw three zombies, who could have done well in a citizens’ marathon, approaching at a decent speed for zombies.
“Are they elite zombies?”
Such a classification of zombies didn’t exist.
Hayato, who had classified them on his own, temporarily interrupted his search for a bicycle and took out his spear from the void.
The tip of the spear, tempered in the other world, shone with Damascus steel.
The handle part retained the texture of the wood, which had been soaked in blood on the battlefield.
The three zombies approached Hayato without being intimidated, even in a situation that would make ordinary humans afraid.
A cold February wind blew through the station’s bicycle parking lot.
In the next moment, Hayato’s body rotated halfway.
As he rotated, the spear swung, and the blade sliced through the neck of the first zombie.
A dull sound was heard as the blade deeply gouged the neck.
“Next.”
The spear that had sliced through the first zombie was pulled back with brute force, and it pierced the chest of the second zombie in an arc.
Hayato put his strength into the handle of the spear, lifted the zombie that was still stuck, and threw it onto the road.
Almost simultaneously, the spear regained its freedom, and the third zombie approached.
Hayato could have sliced, thrust, or kicked.
He thought it could go either way, so he swung the raised spear and struck the third zombie’s head.
A dull sound was heard, and the third zombie fell to the ground.
Hayato swung his spear to remove the dirt and returned it to his spatial storage.
“Those who are not elites have not yet arrived.”
Mumbling this, Hayato resumed his search for a bicycle.
There were still many bicycles in the bicycle parking lot.
After searching for a while, he finally found a bicycle with a lock on it.
“Just in time.”
As Hayato looked up after finding the bicycle, he saw the subsequent group of the Kirigaoka Citizens’ Marathon approaching.
Hayato got on the bicycle and rode it in the opposite direction, dropping out of the Kirigaoka Citizens’ Marathon.
He pedaled the bicycle vigorously and rode away smoothly.
Then, he considered stopping by a drugstore as he made a detour.
It was just a slight detour from the station, so it wasn’t much trouble.
He visited several stores that he remembered.
But all of them had their entrances broken, and there were signs of looting.
The shelves that were visible from the outside were empty.
And zombies were even visible.
“They’re everywhere.”
Hayato, feeling that it was a waste of time, changed the direction of his bicycle and left the store.
Fortunately, he had military supplies in his spatial storage, and he had plenty of water and food.
He had obtained a bicycle, and he had achieved his purpose for this trip.
Even if he couldn’t get any supplies from the drugstore, it wasn’t fatal for Hayato.
Hayato rode his bicycle and distanced himself from the zombies.
Once he entered the vicinity of Yui’s house, he moved even more carefully.
After confirming that there were no zombies chasing after him, he quickly entered the house using the spare key that had been given to him.
Hayato, who had returned, went upstairs and went to Yui’s room, calling out first.
“I’m home.”
Yui finally opened the door and showed her face after hearing Hayato’s voice.
“Welcome back. How was it?”
“I got a bicycle. I think it’ll make exploring for supplies easier.”
Hayato answered Yui calmly.
Then, Yui showed a look of relief at Hayato’s report that he had returned safely.
