Chapter 4: The Wounded Left Arm
Hayato began walking through the city, which was still devoid of any human presence.
It was only natural that he didn’t see any people, but why weren’t there any zombies?
There were zombies in the school building and the supermarket, so perhaps they preferred dark places. Encountering them suddenly indoors was truly a horror scenario.
“I should try to find a bicycle, at least.”
When Hayato was summoned to the other world, he was at school.
His own bicycle was at school, but after three years, it was probably put away or discarded, as he couldn’t find it.
As he walked, wondering where he could get a bicycle, he soon heard a strange sound.
It was a combination of zombie moans and the sound of something being hit.
“Looks like there are some outdoor types around.”
Even zombies seemed to have their own personalities.
Thinking this, Hayato looked toward the zombies, who were braving the rain and wind, and saw three of them gathered at the entrance of a house.
“What are they doing?”
Hayato frowned and realized that there might be survivors inside the house, which was why the zombies were gathered there.
Zombies didn’t knock on doors to make sales visits; they did it to spread the virus.
Zombies would bite humans, infect them with the virus, and then control their bodies after they died, causing them to bite new humans.
If you considered it like a zombie virus sales visit, it was more like a pushy sales tactic.
And like plants performing photosynthesis, zombies absorbed magic energy to power their activities, so they didn’t starve to death.
“But they’re already dead, you know.”
The zombies were pounding on the door fiercely, like debt collectors.
Hayato, considering the possibility that there were survivors holed up inside the house, decided to eliminate the zombies.
For now, what he wanted most was information.
Hayato took out his spear from his spatial storage, grabbed it without any care, and ran forward.
With his bear-like speed, he dashed forward and thrust the tip of his spear into the first zombie’s head, bringing it down with a single strike.
“I guess you could call this a walk in the park.”
But that didn’t mean he wanted demons to show up.
Hayato made such excuses to himself as he swung his spear again and again.
The spear traced a path through the air and pierced the throat of the second zombie.
Hayato kicked the second zombie’s body away and aimed his spear at the third.
“You’re the last one.”
The last zombie was a bit more agile than the previous two.
Zombies that were newly turned had higher capabilities when using human bodies.
It seemed that the third zombie still had some intelligence left.
“It’s not fair to use the other two as shields.”
The spear that was swung at it pierced the last zombie, and it fell without a fight.
After watching it fall, Hayato swung his spear again, flinging the dirt off the tip. He then reached for the house’s door.
But it was locked, and there was no sign of it opening.
He considered breaking it down, but if he wanted information from the other party, breaking the door would be a bad move.
As a form of retaliation, he might be lied to and told it was a paradise, only to be introduced to a zombie paradise.
Hayato moved away from the entrance and looked up at the second-floor window.
There, he saw a girl standing by the window.
“She doesn’t seem to be a zombie.”
Hayato understood that the girl at the window had been watching his battle with the zombies.
However, although the zombies were lying on the ground, the girl didn’t show any signs of coming out.
The reason for this was clear.
If a bear had appeared and defeated the three zombies that were pounding on the door, would you invite the bear into your home and thank it?
If Hayato were an ordinary person, he would have sent a strong message, saying, “Go back to the mountains!”
“I can’t call out to her loudly, or I’ll attract zombies.”
Hayato, wondering what to do, came up with the idea of jumping onto the roof.
Hayato’s strength and agility were bear-like.
And the structure of his body was more suited for jumping than a bear’s.
“Alright, let’s do this.”
The bear that had been living in the other world for the past three years didn’t return to the mountains. He pretended to head toward the entrance and then ran in the opposite direction, gaining momentum before leaping.
Hayato’s body soared high into the air.
And his right foot landed firmly on the roof of the first floor.
Hayato, now on the roof, approached the second-floor window and knocked lightly.
The girl at the window was surprised, her eyes wide, as she looked back at Hayato.
The girl’s clothing was the uniform of a middle school in the city.
It seemed she was in her own room, as there was a study desk, a bed, and a pink chair that looked like something a teenage girl would have.
“I’m sorry, but zombies might find us. Could you let me inside your house?”
“……Please come in.”
The girl may have reluctantly opened the window because Hayato said, “Zombies will come if we stay here.”
Hayato thought he might have been threatening her and that she might call the police, so he took off his shoes politely and placed them on the roof, entering the girl’s room in his socks.
The girl pulled out a pink chair with casters and offered it to Hayato.
She then sat on the bed herself.
“I’m sorry for intruding.”
“Hmm, hello?”
Hayato offered a typical greeting, and the girl returned it with a confused expression.
“I’m sorry for intruding like this. It seems your house was being attacked by zombies.”
“Yeah, thanks. They were a bit noisy, so I was bothered by them.”
The girl expressed her gratitude, but her words were light.
If the zombies had broken down the door and entered, she would have been bitten and turned into a zombie.
Despite this, the girl remained calm, and Hayato began to have doubts about her.
Then, as if she sensed Hayato’s thoughts, the girl rolled up her left sleeve, showing him a bite mark on her white, slender arm, which had already turned black.
“I was already bitten, so it was just a matter of time.”
In the midst of Hayato’s silence, the girl continued to explain.
“My family and I were evacuated to the nearby middle school, but one of the people in the supply team hid the fact that he was bitten, and he turned into a zombie and bit me. That’s why we were expelled.”
From the girl’s explanation, Hayato understood the general circumstances.
The reason she wasn’t killed on the spot was probably because the infection was due to the fault of the evacuation center, and her family was also there.
“I have a few hours left. At most, I think it’ll be over after I sleep tonight. Thank you.”
The girl thanked him, but she seemed tired, as if she had a fever.
