Chapter 13: Collected Items at the Pharmacy
After finishing his collection in the shopping district, Hayato returned to Yui’s house.
The cold wind stung his cheeks, and the way back was desolate, but Hayato’s heart was light.
The results from the pharmacy far exceeded his expectations.
He quietly entered the house using the key he had been given, making sure to close the door softly.
He then went upstairs and stood in front of Yui’s room, calling out.
“I’m back.”
“Welcome home.”
With the door’s lock released, Hayato entered the room.
Yui looked at him, silently asking how it went.
With a smile, Hayato reported the results.
“The pharmacy in the shopping district had its shutters down, but everything inside was intact. I took everything that hadn’t passed its expiration date.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Oh, I also took some of the pain patches, even though they were a bit expired. I figured I could give them to that school.”
Though Hayato spoke proudly, Yui gave him a look filled with disbelief.
To show her, Hayato pulled out a cardboard box containing five cases of ten bottles of energy drinks from the storage space.
“Look, it’s a lot.”
Yui, seeing the huge box, protested. “Don’t bring a giant cardboard box into my room all of a sudden.”
“Okay, okay. I’ll put it away.”
Once Hayato placed the box away, Yui asked, “So, you’re going to use that for trading with Kirikou Agricultural High School, right?”
“Yeah. Of course, we’ll keep the best stuff for ourselves and only trade what we don’t need.”
Hayato’s provision of supplies was in exchange for knowledge on how to replace batteries.
In a world where civilization had collapsed, the knowledge to get an unusable vehicle running had considerable value.
Though he thought salt alone might be insufficient to teach someone with limited understanding, he had gone out to find additional supplies, aiming to achieve his goal if he could give something useful in return.
“You can choose anything you like. If you store it in the space, it won’t expire. There’s enough space left, so you can use up to one 8-tatami mat area.”
When Yui heard that Hayato was willing to let her use part of his space storage, she was astonished.
“In that case, make a list of what you brought.”
Yui grabbed a piece of paper and a pen from her desk and handed them to him.
After they went through the list together, the following items were confirmed:
-

Pain relievers, eczema and dermatitis treatment, fever and pain medicine, nasal allergy medication, sexual function enhancers, various vitamin supplements, cavity prevention toothpaste (fluoride), etc.

“Honestly, it might be quicker to just choose what to throw away instead.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
After Yui’s calm suggestion, Hayato nodded dejectedly.
The next morning, Hayato woke to the sound of noise.
In a world overrun by zombies, making noise was something to avoid.
Though it likely hadn’t reached inside, he couldn’t deny it was careless.
Still, with Hayato around, they were safe, and even if he got bitten, he could heal, so there wasn’t any real issue as long as he was there.
—What are they up to?
Shaking off the sleepiness, Hayato got up and moved to the kitchen.
“Oh, good morning. Did I wake you?”
“No, I might just have good hearing.”
Having experienced a battlefield in another world, Hayato’s physical abilities were heightened.
By the way, the hearing of a brown bear is 2000 times that of a human’s.
Though he usually suppressed it unconsciously, if he focused on hearing, it could become a serious matter.
“What were you doing?”
“Making breakfast. I thought I’d try using some of the supplies we got yesterday.”
As Hayato got closer, a pleasant smell drifted from Yui.
Looking closely, her hair was swaying softly, and her skin appeared more radiant than usual.
Come to think of it, in addition to the nutritional supplements, she’d also received hair care, body care, and skincare products.
“Wasn’t it cold when you washed up, since you can’t use hot water?”
Yui had several water buckets brought from the other world placed around the house.
Usually, they just wiped down with a wet towel, but it seemed she had used them for a full wash last night.
“Yeah, it was cold.”
But she seemed satisfied with the result.
Hayato, realizing he should compliment her for looking good after putting effort into her appearance, spoke up.
“Your hair is really smooth, and your skin is beautiful. Also, you smell great.”
“Mm.”
Yui blushed and nodded.
Though Hayato’s vocabulary was limited, Yui didn’t seem to mind, and in the end, they found balance.
Breakfast was ready, and along with the food Hayato had brought, there were cereal energy bars and powdered green tea from the pharmacy.
“It’s quite a luxurious breakfast.”
“Yeah, meals are important.”
“I agree.”
Hayato sat down and grabbed a calorie bar, taking a bite. The sweetness was just right, and with every chew, the taste of chocolate spread through his mouth.
The long-awaited sweetness danced around in his mouth.
“This is luxury.”
Reaching for the green tea, he sipped from his cup. The bitterness of the tea spread, balancing the sweetness.
“Yui, your decision was absolutely right.”
“Are you talking about only giving the things we don’t need?”
“Exactly. I might have gotten a bit carried away.”
Nutritional supplements were better used by them.
Items with no expiration date might not be used up by just Hayato and Yui, but they could be traded with others outside Kirikou Agricultural High School.
Medications with expiration dates couldn’t be traded, but they could still be used by them. Since factories had stopped production, this might have been the last chance to acquire them.
In the end, the items being traded were expired pain relief patches, some supports for hands, feet, and waist, and some electronic measurement devices.
The number of supports and measurement devices was large enough that Hayato didn’t mind trading them now.
The hair growth and hair loss products weren’t needed either, but since it seemed like the other side didn’t need them, they were excluded from the list.
“Well, I’m off.”
“Take care, and be careful.”
After breakfast, Hayato was seen off by Yui and headed to Kirigaoka Agricultural High School.
◇◇◇◇◇◇
Like last time, Hayato crossed over the front fence and entered the school grounds of Kirigaoka Agricultural High School.
Though it was only his second visit, perhaps Hayato’s presence had already become known, as this time, armed teachers didn’t rush to meet him.
Hayato asked where Oomori was and walked through the school like a student, going to the staff room to deliver the supplies to him.
“You’re able to move so safely.”
“Well, zombies still chase me. The bike’s just faster.”
While taking out the supplies on an empty desk in the staff room, Hayato explained.
The intelligence and abilities of newly-turned zombies were about the same as a drunk person.
Though some zombies could run, others staggered, but no zombie could outrun a bicycle.
Of course, if you were surrounded by zombies on a one-way path, it was over, and those who moved by bike had probably been bitten at least once in the past three years.
“Well, this is just a temporary measure until I can get a car running.”
Omori nodded slowly, taking in Hayato’s explanation.
“I see. But please prioritize your safety over transporting supplies.”
“Thank you very much.”
As Hayato continued to speak, he began to take out the following items:
-
- Pain Relief Patches (7 large sheets, 6 boxes) – Expired a few months ago
-
- Supports for hands, feet, and waist (3 sets each)
-
- Digital Thermometers (3)
-
- Blood Pressure Monitors (2)
-
- Bathroom Scales (1)
-
- Salt Meters (1, 2000-use type)
“They were leftover in the back of a drugstore. The pain patches expired a few months ago, but I figured they could still be used, so I brought them along.”
Hayato gestured with both hands as he explained.
Oomori listened intently, nodding as he picked up a pain relief patch.
“So, there are still some left.”
“Yeah, it was a surprise.”
Hayato had fabricated the source of his supplies because if someone from the scene ever found out, they would realize his strength was similar to that of a brown bear.
Though it was unlikely that anyone from Kirigaoka Agricultural High School would demand he work like a draft horse for their group, he took precautions.
“By the way, is it just teachers and students here?”
“We’ve been turning people away.”
Oomori answered in a stern tone.
Surprised by his seriousness, Hayato quickly reassured him.
“It’s fine. I’m not looking to join.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Being part of a large group means no freedom.”
Hayato explained, and Omori nodded, then asked,
“That’s true. But do you have enough water and food?”
Omori crossed his arms and stared at Hayato.
Hayato confidently spread his arms and pointed to his healthy form.
“As you can see, I’m alive and well.”
Oomori, looking at Hayato, nodded in understanding.
