Chapter 1: Unexpected Attack at the Feast
My head felt as heavy as lead, and my consciousness was hazy.
It was like the feeling after staying up all night and then spending the afternoon dozing, or having a fever close to 40 degrees.
My consciousness was that muddled.
I moaned and twisted my body, feeling the cold stone beneath my back.
It seemed I was lying on a hard, stone-paved floor.
I felt a slight comfort, but the sense of unease remained.
Why am I sleeping on the floor?
In my foggy thoughts, I tried to recall the events of last night.
The Empire had held a grand feast to celebrate the defeat of the Demon Lord, and expensive casks of wine were freely offered.
“Crossing dimensions grants one special powers.”
For this reason, I was summoned to a medieval-level civilization in another world.
It seems a vast amount of magical power is required for the summoning, which only occurs once every ten years.
I was summoned three years ago and am the youngest among those summoned.
However, I gained immense physical abilities on par with a grizzly bear, the ability to use sacred magic, and a special skill called “spatial storage.”
Physical abilities seem to increase over time; a man summoned thirteen years ago and who recently fought the Demon Lord to a standstill possessed the strength of an African elephant.
I acquired sacred magic, which can heal injuries and illnesses, after arriving here.
Spatial storage allows me to store the equivalent of ten 8-mat rooms or ten 20-foot containers. It is a special power that only those summoned can obtain.
Due to these powers, we were forced to join the military.
The Empire’s decision to defeat the Demon Lord was undoubtedly correct.
The Imperial Army, victorious in war, had returned in triumph.
I was invited to the castle’s feast and, unable to refuse, drank the wine.
It was impossible to decline when the hosts were generals or marquises.
And then I woke up, rolling on the stone floor.
But why did the castle’s servants bring me here?
I opened my eyes slightly, clearing the fog from my thoughts, and found myself in the same summoning chamber as when I was summoned to this world.
Additionally, a magic circle was drawn on the floor, and the priests were preparing for a ceremony.
“Hey, I’ve regained consciousness. What’s going on?”
“I’m sorry, it seems the dose of the drug was insufficient. But you should be numb and unable to move for half a day.”
In my hazy consciousness, I heard words I couldn’t believe.
As I shifted my gaze, I saw the Prime Minister among the priests.
The Prime Minister sighed and looked down on me with a cold, emotionless gaze, as if he were looking at a stray dog, his eyes completely devoid of any recognition of me as a person.
“You were listening, Kumakura Hayato? I will send you back to your original world.”
The Prime Minister gave me a reason, facing my doubtful gaze.
“Now that the war is over, we have no further use for you. It would be dangerous to have a wild beast like you remain here.”
The Prime Minister spoke to me with an attitude of exasperation, as if to say, “Don’t ask such obvious things.”
What I had heard was a promise to promote me in the army, grant me a title and fief, and allow me to marry a noble daughter befitting my new status.
However, among the summoned individuals who had served in the army, only I remained alive.
If they sent me back, they would no longer need to keep their promises to me.
“There was a country where they killed those they summoned, and as a result, the summoning failed. Therefore, I will spare your life. Be grateful for the noble sacrifices of those who came before you.”
Upon hearing this, I could not refuse.
It was clear that remaining would lead to nothing but trouble.
Should I stay in an empire where I would be in danger if I remained, or return to Japan, where I had graduated from high school but had a three-year gap in my education? Which was the better option?
Seeing me fall silent, the Prime Minister let out a small, derisive laugh.
“The military supplies in your spatial storage will be given to you as severance pay. Go ahead.”
In response to the Prime Minister’s words, the surrounding priests began their incantations.
The spells were recited clearly and loudly, as if reading from a script.
Beneath my body, the magic circle emitted a pale blue light.
The light enveloped and permeated my body, giving me the sensation of being disintegrated.
Helpless, I was consumed and erased by the light.
