Chapter 8: Retirement Live
“…Retirement… Is this for real?”
I quickly took out my phone, typed “芹沢聖奈” (Serizawa Seina), and the predictive text showed “芹沢聖奈 引退” (Serizawa Seina retirement).
This must be a joke, right? Why…?
Serizawa Seina
She started her career as an idol about three years ago.
Back in middle school, I wasn’t particularly interested in idols. I preferred anime, and idol culture felt like a different world, something that didn’t really appeal to me.
Then, one day, I randomly came across her debut song, “Koi no Poker Face,” on an SNS recommendation, and it completely changed my world.
She had a blank expression, yet there was something fun about her, and her beautiful, captivating appearance drew me in. I became utterly fascinated.
I don’t know if this is the right way to describe it, but for me, it felt like a fateful encounter. You might think it’s just something said through a screen, but I really felt that way.
At first, there were many negative comments like, “An idol with a blank expression?” “Isn’t the editing weird?” “She’s cute, but this won’t get her popular.” But I didn’t care. I always left a comment on her SNS whenever her songs were uploaded or she did a live broadcast.
Sometimes, I’d get a reply like, “Thank you for always supporting me. I’ll keep doing my best,” and that… that made me happy.
She had the unique feature of being an idol with a blank expression, but she only performed as an idol online, not under a company. She did everything herself—songwriting, composing, video editing—so it took longer than other idols, but gradually, her fanbase grew.
About two years into her career, an influencer covered her, and when that video went viral, her popularity skyrocketed.
Now, she boasts 5 million followers and 4 million subscribers, and she’s become one of the top idols in Japan, appearing in many media outlets.
About a year after she became such a big star… her sudden announcement of retirement left me in despair.
Someone might say, “But you have Elna,” but that’s a different story.
Actually… maybe it’s not a different story. Maybe deep down, I couldn’t face Elna because I still had feelings for her.
I looked at my phone screen, which displayed, “Serizawa Seina, sudden retirement. The retirement press conference will be announced on her channel today.”
Stunned, I left school and, while waiting for the light at the first crosswalk, I saw a limousine parked on the road.
Then, Elna got out of the car, saw me, and immediately hugged me.
“What’s wrong? Why do you look so sad…? Did something happen at school?” she asked as she hugged me, guiding me into the car.
“…Serizawa… Seina is retiring…” I said, and she briefly gripped my uniform before quietly murmuring, “I see… That’s sad. You must really like her.”
“…Yeah.”
She pressed my face to her chest and gently patted my head, saying, “It’s okay… It’s okay. I’m here for you.”
That night, I watched her retirement live on the big TV screen in the living room.
I cried nonstop from the beginning, hardly able to see the screen through my tears, but I still cheered her on, thinking of it as her final stage.
Meanwhile, Elna stayed in the bedroom to avoid disturbing me, occasionally peeking out to check on me with a worried expression.
When the live ended, she began speaking.
“To everyone who has supported me all this time, thank you so much. I’ve always admired idols… but I thought it wasn’t for me, because I’m shy, expressionless, and not cute. In fact, I had a lot of haters at first. But even when I wasn’t popular, there were always people who left supportive comments and gave me super chats whenever I uploaded songs… I think I’m where I am now, standing on this stage, because of those people. Thank you so much. These past few years have been… truly irreplaceable to me…” Her poker face cracked, and her tears made my own tear ducts break down further.
“Honestly… I wanted to… I wanted to be an idol for much longer! But… there was a reason I couldn’t continue… I’m so sorry…! Thank you… from the bottom of my heart!”
In the end, the reason for her retirement was never revealed.
Because of that, the live became somewhat controversial, but even so, I felt it was a fitting end for her—unlike her usual self, but still true to who she was.
After I turned off the TV, Elna walked over and kissed me.
“…Are you okay?”
“…Yeah. I’m sorry… for everything,” I apologized for showing such a pathetic side, crying at the idol’s retirement live.
“It’s fine, you know? I’m not exactly generous, but I do understand. I’m jealous, though,” she said, pinching my cheek lightly.
“…But, it’s okay… I’m okay now.”
“Really? Then, can you let me hold you tight?”
She gently embraced me, and I hugged her back.
“Ah… Hehe… I’m happy. You can lean on me more, you know?”
“…Yeah.”
Like a child, I let myself be pampered by Elna.
But now… from here on, I’ll be able to face Elna properly.
At least, that’s what I thought…

Chapter 9: The Encounter
I woke up.
It was the same time as usual.
Three days had passed since that live stream.
I slowly got up, and when I looked to the side, for some reason, Elna was sleeping in a school swimsuit.
“…S-school swimsuit!?”
I quickly looked away from the swimsuit, which seemed about to burst.
Then, she slowly opened her eyes and asked, “Good morning… How was it? Were you excited?” tilting her head slightly.
“…Well, yeah…” I replied.
“Hehehe. Momiji-kun, you’re naughty,” she said.
You’re definitely the naughty one here.
“Hey, the day after tomorrow is finally here,” she said happily, her cheeks turning red.
“…Yeah.”
“You’re not excited?”
“No, it’s just that I’m nervous…”
“Don’t worry. Let’s deepen our love together.”
Though a small hole appeared in my heart, that hole was filled by the time spent with Elna.
If I were alone, it might’ve been really bad.
I then started getting ready as usual. Elna drove me to school, and I was about to take a step into a new day… or so I thought.
As I walked near the school gate, a girl with an overwhelming aura passed by me.
“…Eh?”
It was Serizawa Seina.
She was still expressionless, walking as if it was completely normal.
I couldn’t help but call out.
“…S-serizawa-san, right? I’ve been a fan for a long time! You probably don’t know me, but I’ve sent Super Chats under the name YELL, and I’ve supported you since the beginning…!!” I blurted out, saying all the words before I even thought them.
She looked surprised, then grabbed my hand and hugged me.
“…Eh!?”
“I know YELL. I’ve always wanted to meet you. The reason I could continue being an idol is because of you. I’ve always wanted to thank you,” she said.
Then, she kissed me.
“!?”
In the next moment, I felt an immense killing intent from behind.
When I turned around, there was Elna, staring at me with black eyes from the school gate.
And I somehow knew she was saying, “I’ll kill you, kill you, kill you…”
“Ah, um, sorry… you see, I actually have a fiancée…” I said to Serizawa.
At that, Serizawa’s eyes turned completely black, and she gripped my arm tightly, saying, “Huh? What’s this? You didn’t tell me about that. You told me you didn’t have a girlfriend. You said you only liked me. Are you lying?”
Scary, scary, scary!
Amid the mix of happiness, fear, and confusion, I was already being stared at by many people.
“Hey, isn’t that Serizawa Seina?”
“No way, what are you saying… wait, really?”
“Who’s the guy next to her? And why is she at our school?”
Right… why was she at our school?
“This school was chosen by chance. A friend of mine is the principal, so I used that connection to enter through the back door. I didn’t expect to meet YELL here… it’s fate,” she said.
Entering through the back door… Is that even possible?
“Anyway, how about we talk after school about your fiancée and our future? By the way, is the girl glaring at me from the school gate your fiancée? Hmm? She’s cute. Big breasts too. Is she a foreigner? Yeah… totally different type from me,” she said, pinching her stomach.
Hmm… this feels a lot like Elna, though…
I stepped into the school, sensing a tumultuous future.
Rumors were already spreading inside the school.
It was said that Serizawa Seina had entered.
Apparently, she had been attending a correspondence school and had finished the first two years. Now, she had transferred as a third-year student.
Since we were in different grades, there shouldn’t have been any connection, but every break, she would come to my second-year classroom and talk to me.
“And you know, I was really saved by you… But when I rewatched the retirement live, I couldn’t find your comment, and I was really sad about it.”
“Ah… well… of course, I watched the live, but I couldn’t comment because I was crying… I couldn’t rewatch it because it was too tough…” I confessed, and she smiled happily.
“Ah, um! I’m a fan of yours, Serizawa-san! Can I have your autograph?”
As Serizawa and I were talking, some of the boys from my class entered.
Then, with a cold voice, she immediately rejected, saying, “I’ve already retired as an idol.”
Her usual expressionless, cold demeanor was exactly what I had seen in her before. But when she talked to me, she truly seemed happy, showing her emotions openly.
After school, Serizawa and I left the school together.
Normally, she would park the car a little away from the school, but today, she parked it right in front.
Then, the two of us faced each other.
“Can you let go of my fiancée’s hand?” Elna made the first move.
“Fiancée? So what? That’s none of my business. I want to be with the person I like,” Serizawa countered.
And so, the battle began.
