Chapter 9: The Revenger, Reven, Strengthens His Allies
After defeating Kaiste, Reven immediately blew up the tavern that was his final legacy.
KABOOOM!!
“GYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”
“He blew himself up with it!!”
The blast was so powerful that it sent Reven flying as well.
In that opening, gorilla-like monsters surrounded Reven and tried to roast him alive.
“GUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH! Help me!!”
“What is with this chaotic mess of a plot!!”
And just like that, the gorilla-like monsters voraciously devoured Reven.
And then, he turned into an apple.
“He turned into an apple!!”
“EAT THE APPLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!”
Most likely, the now-apple Reven was at a loss for what to do next.
For the time being, he forcibly fed the apple to a passerby.
(I-I should escape while I can…)
Roaks tried to flee the scene.
However, someone was standing behind him.
“Oof…”
“Hey, that hurts, kid! Where do you think you’re walking, huh?”
When he suddenly looked back, a flashy-looking giant of a man was behind him.
He was carrying a large cloth bag with a person inside, and he appeared to be one of Kaiste’s underlings.
“Y-you’re…”
“You bastard… Are you doing this knowin’ full well that I’m Kaiste-sama’s number one disciple, Yashimo? Huh?”
Roaks couldn’t help but think the worst upon seeing him.
(He’s going to be killed! This guy!)
Seeing his reaction, Yashimo must have mistaken it for fear of him, for he laughed fearlessly and said:
“Gyahaha! Look at this wimp, he’s terrified. Normally I’d beat you to a pulp, but I’ll let you off for a hundred gold coins. See, I just managed to capture the ‘Flame Princess’ of the Serenade Kingdom!! But…”
He glanced over at the shop.
“Someone went and burned down our place… Someone blew up the tavern that was Kaiste-sama’s dream!! You know anything about it, kid?!”
Yashimo asked crudely.
Naturally, Roaks answered like this:
“Oh, if you’re looking for him, he’s over there. See, that weird old guy over there.”
Roaks said, pointing nonchalantly at Reven.
The culprit, Reven, stood behind a boy who was staring blankly at the mansion and said:
“Yo, kid. Nice and flashy, ain’t it?”
The boy jumped at the culprit’s words.
“Hey now, no need to be scared. I won’t rat you out to the cops.”
Reven moved in closer to the boy.
“Instead, let’s burn a house down together every day from now on! I’ll lend you a hand.”
“Ah… ah…”
The boy was, of course, terrified of the suspicious, two-meter-tall muscular man and ran away.
“You got that?! Let’s meet here again tomorrow night!!”
Incidentally, the boy hadn’t done anything.
“H-help me!!”
The boy asked a nearby Roaks for help.
(Well, of course that would happen…)
While Roaks was inwardly exasperated, he had forgotten about the presence of Yashimo behind him.
“So it was you… The one who burned down Kaiste-sama’s mansion…”
“Eek! No! It wasn’t me!!”
“Don’t play dumb, you little shit!! You just said that weirdo over there did it!!”
At those words, Roaks stepped forward protectively in front of the boy.
“What is it, kid…?”
“The child said he didn’t do it. I’m pretty sure I said, ‘The culprit is that two-meter-tall weirdo over there.’ Are you capable of understanding words?”
At that, Yashimo snapped.
“Huh?! For a little punk like you to talk back to me, you’ve got some nerve!! Interesting, I’ll slaughter you!!”
Just as Yashimo readied his scythe…
“Hellfire of Grudges!!”
Reven breathed fire from his mouth, roasting Yashimo to a crisp.
“Nicely cooked!!”
CRACK!!
For some reason, Reven punched Yashimo, sending him flying.
“Gwah!! Wh-what’s with this old guy!!”
“Who are you calling an old guy!!”
WHAM!
Reven kicked Yashimo square in the side.
“GUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!!”
The sheer force of the blow sent Yashimo flying.
“H-hey, kid! You had a partner with you!!”
“No, you’re mistaken.”
When he answered with a straight face, Yashimo’s anger finally reached its peak.
“Could it be you who did in Kaiste-sama… I won’t forgive you!!”
With that, he hurled his scythe at Roaks.
“Take this! Death Scythe!!”
“Whoa, here it comes!!”
The sharp blade embedded itself in Reven’s head.
“GWOOOH!!”
“Huh?! That way?!”
As Roaks stared in shock, Reven pulled the scythe from his forehead, blood pouring down, and said:
“Hmph, you’re nothing but a worthless lackey’s lackey. Is this the extent of your power?”
“No, you took that hit full on.”
“This is convenient. Perfect timing, Roaks. I’ll teach you a new technique.”
At those words, Roaks looked skeptical.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to teach me some ‘revenge’ power you supposedly mastered at your ripe old age?! No way!! Sure, there are guys who tick me off, but I don’t want some stupid power that’s clearly got nothing to do with ‘revenge’…”
“WHO ARE YOU CALLING STUPID!!”
Reven shouted as he slugged Roaks with all his might.
“BUBERAAH!!”
“This is why you’re still a greenhorn!! My power isn’t limited to just ‘revenge’!! The sword arts of this blade are one of them!!”
“What?! I thought that was just a decoration!?”
“Hmph, before I awakened my ‘revenge’ power, I was a pretty strong swordsman in the hero’s party!! I’ll show you an example!”
With that, Reven drew his sword.
The tip of the blade was covered in meat grease.
Roaks stared at the greasy blade.
(Is he going to cook with it…?)
“Let’s go!! You small-fry!!”
“Y-you bastard!! How dare you… do that to Kaiste-sama!!”
“I don’t even need to use my revenge power on a scrub like you!! Take this!! ‘One Flash’!!”
As Reven said that, a giant iron bar shot out of his mouth and struck Yashimo in the stomach.
“That has nothing to do with a sword!!”
“Guh…!! Wh-what is this iron bar!?”
While Yashimo was stunned, a group of muscle-bound men holding logs emerged from inside it.
“What?!”
“You fool!!”
The muscular men began to focus their attacks on Yashimo with the logs.
“GUGAGAGAGAH!!”
“Hey, hey! Weren’t you going to teach me swordsmanship!?”
As Roaks interjected, Reven gave a fearless smile and replied:
“Look closely.”
“Huh?”
When Roaks squinted, he saw that among the men was a single master swordsman.
“NUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!”
“That damn Reven!! Telling me to teach this kid a new technique!! He makes the most unreasonable demands!”
The sword master muttered under his breath, but Reven must have heard him.
“WHO THE HELL ARE YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!! ‘Dread Assault’!!”
Reven shouted as he slashed the sword master from behind.
“GUBAAH!!”
“Hmph, can’t let my guard down for a second.”
The swordsman, having been struck, slid off the iron bar and was eaten by the horde of gorilla-like monsters below.
“UGYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!! They ate a person!!”
Seeing this, Reven immediately slashed one of the gorilla-like monsters.
“Gross!! ‘Dread Assault’!”
The gorilla-like monster, slashed from behind by Reven, fell over sideways with a thud.
“That was lame!!”
But at the same time, Roaks realized something.
(Come to think of it, that old guy has been attacking everyone from behind! He’s messing around to draw their attention!! It’s cowardly!! But…!)
Understanding the strategy, Roaks circled around behind Yashimo while his attention was on the muscular men.
“Damn it!! You bastards are screwing with me!!”
“Forgive me… Takashi… this is also for the sake of supremacy…”
The men said, shedding tears as they readied their logs.
“Who the hell is Takashi?! Die!! Ice Storm!!”
Yashimo’s magic instantly froze the men solid.
“For guys that look like that, they’re weak!!… Oh well. You’re next!!”
At Yashimo’s words, Reven smirked.
“Hmph, do you know what ‘party roles’ are?”
“Huh? What are you talking about?”
“I built up your hate, focusing your attacks on me. That’s right, on me, the tank. And while you were taking the bait, our attacker moved in to strike you!!”
“What?!”
By the time Yashimo realized what the words meant, it was too late.
Behind him stood Roaks with his sword drawn.
“You bastard…!!”
“Back Sword!!”
Roaks launched a sneak attack on Yashimo from behind.
“Gwaaah!!”
Yashimo took the hit and collapsed to the ground in a single blow.
“D-damn it… and I just managed to capture the princess, too… guh!”
With those last words, Yashimo fell.
“That’s a completely different move!!”
Reven kicked the fallen Yashimo.
A follow-up attack.
“Wait a minute!! Did he say princess?”
Hearing those words, Roaks moved to open the cloth bag Yashimo had been carrying.
“That’s a cliché!!”
However, Reven punched him to stop him.
“NUOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH!! WHAT WAS THAT FOR ALL OF A SUDDEN!!”
“If you open that, a ‘boy-meets-girl’ situation will start!! A new ‘riajuu’ will be born!! I won’t have it!! I’m the heroine!!”
“WHAT NONSENSE ARE YOU SPOUTING, YOU THIRTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD!!”
Roaks slugged Reven, sending him flying into one of the incredibly muscular men.
“Buberaah!!”
The impact sent the man flying off somewhere.
Probably because he was too weak.
“He disappeared? Oh well!!”
Saying that, Roaks opened the cloth bag.
Inside, a single, beautiful girl lay unconscious.
“See, what did I tell you!! I won’t accept a second heroine!!”
But it was clear she was no ordinary girl.
Because this girl was likely the “princess” being whispered about in the streets.
