Chapter 24: Reven the Avenger Scatters the Gatekeepers
“Bow and Reven made contact…?”
Alex was surprised to hear the news.
“Yes. Bow-sama’s mansion that was hidden in the goblin field was discovered by Reven-dono.”
At those words, Alex sighed.
“Why would his mansion emerge from a goblin field… This is troublesome. I want Reven to work with us again, but those guys…!”
Perhaps irritated by the report, Alex slammed his hand on the desk.
“Isn’t this great? Isn’t this interesting? A man burning for revenge and the ringleader of his revenge targets reuniting for a comedy, right?”
Revelio said this to Alex while laughing as if it were someone else’s problem.
Alex sighed and shook his head as he said:
“Revelio. Don’t you understand the gravity of the situation! Listen, Reven is someone who’s supposed to have never been in our party. If he defeats his former comrades who conquered ‘Legend’ and defeats Bow, the world will find out that Reven was in the hero party!”
“So what?”
“They’ll find out we kicked him out! The hero party will be seen by the world as an ‘unscrupulous party’ that immediately discards useless people!”
“Heh, what happens if the world finds out?”
When Revelio said this deliberately, Alex replied irritably at his attitude:
“Right now, this ‘Bravely Ignite’ is suffering from a labor shortage. If that becomes known, even fewer people will come than now.”
“And?”
“At this rate, we’ll return to being a weak party like before… no, this ‘Bravely Ignite’ will face a crisis of collapse! If we want Reven back, it’s bad if they fight! Besides, Bow is your equal, Revelio!”
At those words, Revelio laughed loudly.
“Heh, Bow and I are equals! That’s funny, Alex.”
“But it’s true! Your abilities and achievements are equal!”
Revelio grinned at those words and picked up his snake spear.
“Wait, where are you going?”
“Obviously. To the party venue.”
“Don’t tell me you’re going to Bow’s place!? Stop!”
Alex shouted loudly at Revelio’s insolent behavior.
“I won’t stop. Besides, you have business with Bow too, right?”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
At those words, Revelio sighed and replied:
“Forgot? About what we left with Bow?”
“Th-that’s… don’t tell me…!”
Revelio grinned at those words and said:
“I’m going to retrieve the Hero’s Sword. Before Reven does.”
~◆Bow’s Mansion◇~
In front of Bow’s mansion stood two gatekeepers who were keeping watch as usual to prevent intruders from entering.
“Th-the mansion suddenly appeared!”
“I applied thinking it’d be easy since it’s hidden in a goblin field!!”
The one who said that was one of the gatekeepers, Garakei.
His appearance was exactly that—a man shaped like a flip phone.
After graduating from the Royal Magic Academy, he became a gatekeeper at Bow’s mansion after three years of unemployment.
His special skill was asserting superiority through academic credentials.
“What are you talking about, you unlicensed bastard!”
The one who said that to him was his fellow gatekeeper, Sumafon.
Sumafon publicly proclaimed his love of refuting arguments, but in reality he was a man who made far-fetched arguments and quibbles rather than actual refutations.
His recent worry was his low salary.
Both were principled in not doing their jobs seriously.
As the two gatekeepers were bickering with each other, a man appeared.
“Y-you’re…”
The figure was Reven wearing a costume of the first-generation mobile phone “Mova”—something hardly anyone used anymore.
“What’s with this old dude!?”
As the two were shocked, Reven glanced at them and said:
“Are you the gatekeepers? Let me in.”
At that single statement, Sumafon replied:
“Like hell we’d let you in, outsider. Refuted!”
At that single statement, Reven blinked his eyes and replied:
“Huh? Didn’t you hear that I’m one of the hero party members and I’m scheduled to come here today?”
At those words, Sumafon was a bit flustered.
After all, he’d never received any such report since taking this job.
But perhaps feeling looked down upon, he said arrogantly:
“Hah? There’s no way a suspicious-looking old dude like you would be coming! Get lost already! Refuted!”
At Sumafon’s words, Reven said mockingly:
“That’s straaaange? Bow told me to come today~ Hold on, I’ll check now.”
At that single statement, Sumafon reflexively tried to stop him.
Because if what this man was saying reached Bow’s ears, he felt he’d be thoroughly oppressed by Bow, who loved power harassment.
“H-hold on!”
“Hmm?”
“You don’t need to check—our boss isn’t here. It’s pointless to even check.”
At that single statement, Reven replied:
“Huh? I just talked to him a moment ago though?”
Yes, this was an undeniable fact.
Bow had told Reven to come if he had business with him.
“Th-there’s no way…”
“Look, I can’t talk to you, so bring Bow here. And you just lied saying Bow isn’t here, right? Why tell such a boring lie?”
“Guh…!”
Just as Sumafon was at a loss for words—
“Ugh, this is why the uneducated… There’s no way the master here would meet with someone without even academic credentials like you. Wait, could it be you don’t understand words? Is it because you’re uneducated so you can’t understand the words of a highly educated person like me!”
Garakei interjected into the conversation.
But Reven calmly replied:
“Okay, I have no academic credentials so I can’t understand your highly educated words. In that case, I don’t understand the language, so I can go in, right?”
“Wha…!”
As he said this, he ignored the two gatekeepers and tried to enter the mansion.
“W-wait…!!”
“W-we won’t let you through!!”
Finally, at this point, the two tried to fulfill their duties.
That’s when it happened.
“Uho!!”
Suddenly, a gorilla-like pest monster attacked the two.
“Wh-what is this! This design that’s unpleasant just to look at!!”
“Beats me?”
Roaks said this as if following Reven and entered the mansion.
“W-wait! Entering without permission…”
“Uhoooooooo!!”
The gorilla-like monster suddenly became excited, and masses of screwdriver-like things emerged from its zipper.
“What is this!!”
“This monster still makes no sense!”
Ignoring Roaks’s commentary on the shocked pair, the monster restrained Sumafon.
“L-let go! Refuted!”
“Is that your catchphrase!?”
But the gorilla-like monster ignored that and punched straight through his abdomen.
BOOM!!
“Guph!!”
Sumafon was pierced through the torso and died.
“N-my uneducated partner was defeated!!”
As Garakei said this, the gorilla-like monster pierced him with a hand chop.
“Gah… Ah… y-you…”
“Uho (Shut up and die)”
Before Garakei could even give his death throes, the gorilla-like monster snuffed out his life.
“As merciless as always, that weird thing.”
“What… what are they…?”
As Reven was shocked, the gorilla-like monster became increasingly excited.
“Uho! Ah-yeah! Ah-yeah! Ah-yeah! Uhoooooooo!!”
“Let’s hurry ahead! They’re searching for their next prey!”
With that, Reven destroyed the mansion’s door.
To settle things with his former fellow recruit.
