Chapter 13: Deciding Groups for the Field Trip
It was mid-May, and the day for our social studies field trip was approaching.
The plan was a half-day program, with several companies and facilities as options. The students would decide where to go. We were divided into five groups to choose our destinations.
With a class of forty students, that meant eight per group.
In these group decisions, I often ended up as the leftover. But this time, Chikage, Tsu-chan, and Sakura invited me right away, so I didn’t have to worry about that.
However, there was a bit of a problem…
Nakaoka, a central figure in our class, used his social skills to invite Chikage and the others, saying, “You three should join us.”
As expected of the class favorite.
To invite girls so confidently in front of everyone like that.
For a guy like me, who blends into the background, that kind of confidence was something I’d never have.
Honestly, I thought it was cool. I could see why he was popular with the girls.
However, the top three beauties in the school didn’t seem impressed. Seeing Nakaoka persistently trying to include Chikage and the others, I quietly considered when to step in.
“The groups are decided, and it’s not like we’re going out for fun, so isn’t this fine?” said Chikage.
“The gender ratio is off. And Kyosaka, it would be awkward to be the only guy, right?”
Chikage and Nakaoka glared at each other, sparks flying between them.
The boys watching from the back probably wanted to go on the field trip with the three most beautiful girls in the school. No matter how it happened, spending half a day with those three was a win. I understood that Nakaoka was speaking for these boys and that he had his own pride.
But since we had already decided the groups, the gender ratio shouldn’t matter anymore.
(Well, I didn’t expect to be the only guy in the group… but this is still part of our classwork.)
If I stepped in now, I might get on the bad side of Nakaoka’s top-tier group in the class hierarchy, but that didn’t matter. What mattered most was the feelings of Chikage, Tsu-chan, and Sakura. From the perspective of the school curriculum, the gender ratio of the group shouldn’t be a priority.
“I’m fine being the only guy. Nakaoka-kun, you don’t need to worry about it.”
“Ha?”
“You’re just trying to look out for me, right? But it’s okay. I’ve decided to go on the field trip with this group.”
“…Tch, fine.”
Nakaoka spat out the words with a sour expression.
The classmates’ eyes were on me. The girls’ stares were particularly piercing.
Maybe it was because I had stood up to one of the class leaders… The room buzzed with whispers, but I pretended not to notice, keeping a straight face.
“Was Kyosaka-kun always this bold?”
“Naka-cchi went too far just to be in Chikage’s group.”
“Well, that ‘I’m the boss’ attitude can be cool sometimes.”
“But what Kyosaka-kun did was refreshing.”
…
While the girls whispered among themselves, Chikage, Tsu-chan, and Sakura gave me looks that seemed to say “Good job.” Their approving gazes made me a bit embarrassed.
And… from this moment on, Nakaoka started calling me a “ladies’ man” behind my back, but that’s another story.
※
“Hi, Kyosaka-chan!”
“Uh, hi.”
“I’m Kokoa Keage. We’re in the same group for the field trip, so nice to meet you.”
During lunch break, probably because of the incident during the group decision, people started talking to me more often.
Keage-san was one of them.
She came to my seat with three other girls in tow.
“I’ve been wanting to talk to you, Kyosaka-chan. You’ve got a cute face, and you stood up to Nakaoka so firmly. That was pretty cool. You’ve got guts.”
“t-thanks…”
Keage-san had healthy tan skin and a distinctive black ponytail.
Like Tsu-chan, she wore a skirt that was just within school regulations, showing off her thighs. She was also well-endowed, enough to make the boys’ hearts race.
Her blouse had two buttons undone, revealing a deep cleavage and a heart charm necklace.
No, I need to stay focused…
“But I understood where Nakaoka-kun was coming from…”
“You’re defending him? You’re such a nice guy.”
Keage-san laughed cheerfully.
Her playful, almost flirtatious manner made my heart skip a beat. She had a brightness without any shadows, though there was also a sense of danger, like a carnivorous plant inviting prey with its beauty.
“Hey, Kokoa. You’re being a bit too forward. You’re making Okeihan uncomfortable.”
“Oh, sorry, sorry. Tsukasa, when did you get so close to Kyosaka-chan? You guys have been talking a lot lately, huh?”
“I’ll explain later. Now, shoo-shoo.”
Tsu-chan, who had been behind Keage-san, shooed the other three girls away and came to my seat.
“See you, Tsukasa. You too, Kyosaka-chan.”
“Uh, yeah.”
“Ui, see you later.”
Keage-san waved and left the classroom with her group of girls.
I was left stunned by the whirlwind event. It felt like my jaw had literally dropped.
“Okeihan, don’t get all flustered over someone like Kokoa.”
Tsu-chan said, plopping down in a nearby seat and resting her chin on her hand, pouting.
“I-I wasn’t!”
“Sure, you weren’t! It’s written all over your face.”
“N-No way?”
I touched my face, trying to figure out if it was that obvious.
“Kokoa has been with more than a hundred guys, so she’s not someone you can handle. Just be careful. I think you’re her next target.”
“O-Oh.”
I nodded vaguely.
Chikage and Sakura’s eyes were drilling into me from behind Tsu-chan, clearly telling me not to get too close to other girls.
Sigh…
Just thinking about these three is already enough to fill my mind…
