Three days after starting her diet, Hiyori-san was diligently following the plan.
She was working so hard at it that the phrase “quitting after three days,” as people often say, seemed entirely irrelevant to her. Of course, it wasn’t realistic to expect results in such a short time.
Knowing that perseverance is what truly matters, I continued to do everything I could to support her.
From our morning walks to preparing her diet-friendly lunch boxes, I even helped with dinner, making sure we calculated all the calories properly.
Of course, part of it was simply that I wanted to spend more time with her, so I was genuinely happy to achieve that.
But doing the same thing every day would eventually become monotonous. There needed to be some variety or change to keep things fresh.
So today, I decided to switch up her workout routine with something a little more intense.

“You’re full of energy today, Hiyori-san. Today’s workout is a bit tougher than our usual walks, but it looks like you’ll handle it just fine.”
“That’s because today’s lunch was extra hearty to help me refuel! I need to burn off those extra calories!!”
She said it like that, but it wasn’t as though I had prepared something unsuitable for her diet.
I had just slightly increased the portion size, planning for today’s workout, and structured the menu around pork as the main protein.
In terms of calories, it wasn’t that different from her usual lunch boxes, but I kept that to myself to maintain her motivation.
“Uhhh…! I thought about wearing spats for you today, Yuusuke-kun, but… showing off the shape of my butt when I’ve gained a little weight is just too embarrassing… I’m sorry…!!”
“Hiyori-san? You really don’t have to say things like that. Also, I wasn’t expecting it or anything, so please don’t worry about stuff like that.”
During our morning walks, she usually wore long sleeves and long pants to keep warm, but today, she was dressed in a slightly lighter workout outfit – a loose T-shirt and half pants.
She spoke with regret, lightly patting her own backside as she did, and I found myself having to interject before clearing my throat to explain today’s exercise plan.
“When it comes to effective dieting exercises, combining aerobic and anaerobic workouts is apparently important.”
“Aerobic and anaerobic…?”
I spoke of what I had read in my books, but Hiyori tilted her head, clearly confused, a question mark practically floating above her.
I realised that simply saying the terms wasn’t enough, so I explained in detail.
“Aerobic exercise is like the walking we do every morning. It doesn’t put much strain on your muscles, so you won’t build them up, but it burns fat efficiently.”
“Then anaerobic exercise is the opposite! Stuff like strength training that puts lots of strain on your body!”
“Exactly, that’s right. While anaerobic exercise doesn’t directly burn fat as effectively, it increases your basal metabolism, making your body burn more calories overall.”
“I see…! So basically, I do strength training to make it easier to burn calories, then burn off all that fat with light exercise, and end up with a va-va-voom body! Right!?”
“…That phrasing is a little old-fashioned, isn’t it? But yeah, that’s the idea.”
Having studied all of this thoroughly beforehand, I couldn’t help but let out a wry smile at her enthusiastic words before continuing.
“So, today we’re going to do something a little more intense than our usual walks using this.”
“Oh, a jump rope! That brings back memories…! I haven’t used one since elementary school…!!”
Seeing the jump rope I pulled out from my bag, Hiyori said that before muttering to herself, “I haven’t grown in height since then…”
Before she could spiral into any unnecessary negativity, I handed her the jump rope and asked her to check its length while explaining its benefits.
“Jump rope is an aerobic exercise that uses your entire body. It’s tougher than walking, but because it raises your heart rate so effectively, it burns fat more efficiently. Oh, and don’t forget to warm up before you start jumping, okay? Moving suddenly can lead to injuries.”
“Yeees! As expected, people who were in sports clubs know so much about this stuff!”
“Well, I was in one. But yeah, I know firsthand just how important warming up is.”
Especially on cold days like today, it was dangerous not to loosen up your body properly.
I’d seen plenty of friends get hurt because of that… I thought to myself as I helped her through her stretches. Once her body seemed warm enough, I spoke.
“Okay, shall we start with some light jumps? Once your body gets used to it, we’ll move on to the full workout plan for today.”
