A Fun and Sweet Autumn Date Filled with Delicious Cravings.
Autumn… a season when so many things come into fashion.
For instance, it is called the season of sports, of art, or even of reading.
With the end of the scorching summer and the arrival of cooler days, it becomes easier to dedicate oneself to activities like sports or artistic pursuits. And right now, I too am in the midst of enjoying autumn with Hiyori-san.
On our way back from school, we stopped by the sweets buffet we visit so often that it might as well be our usual haunt, indulging in a meal brimming with the flavours of autumn.
“Mm~! When it comes to autumn, it has to be Japanese sweets! I just can’t get enough of this chewy mochi texture~!”
Pressing her cheeks with bliss, Hiyori-san seemed to be relishing the joys of autumn’s appetites to her heart’s content.
Watching her open her mouth wide to devour a skewer of dango, I couldn’t help but smile as I said:
“Japanese sweets like these are great, but autumn also has so many seasonal fruits. Eating them as they are is delicious too.”
“I know, right~! Persimmons, grapes, pears – they’re all in season! We went with the Japanese sweets course this time, but next time we should totally do the fruit course!”
Nodding at her words, I glanced at the banner that read “Autumn Flavour Fair.”
In the showcase lined with more types of sweets than usual, customers were gathering, each one looking happy as they made their choices.
“Alrighty then, onto the next round~! What should I get next~!?”
While I was still enjoying the conversation, Hiyori-san had already finished the food on her plate and stood up to go for seconds.
She really does eat a lot, I thought, but even that side of her seemed cute to me. Smiling softly, I too rose from my seat to go pick out more sweets.
“There’s Mont Blanc, sweet potato tart, and even jelly with seasonal fruits! Ahh, I can’t decide…! What should I eat…!?”
“Oh, they even have chestnut rice over here. And there’s pork miso soup with sweet potatoes too – wow, that’s impressive…”
“There was also an autumn special mushroom pasta at the pasta corner! There’s just too much I want to eat, it’s driving me crazy!!”
Even though it was a sweets buffet, they had prepared staple foods as well, perhaps because people would get tired of just sweets.
It seemed the restaurant had put in extra effort for autumn, with their limited-time food menu looking especially appetising.
“Seeing all these dishes reminds me that autumn has so much more than sweets. Maybe I should try making mixed rice one of these days.”
“That sounds great! Chestnut rice and sweet potato rice are both delicious, but I also love mixed rice packed with mushrooms and chicken!”
“And… there are plenty of seasonal fish too. The classic Pacific saury, salmon, and mackerel as well.”
“Uwaah~! Just hearing that is making me crave some savoury fish…! Imagine pouring soy sauce over a nice fatty saury and having it with a mouthful of rice… I’m drooling… literally drooling…!”
Every time I mentioned something delicious, Hiyori-san would twist and squirm as she imagined the taste, giving the most animated reactions.
Watching her with mild amusement, I was taken by surprise when she suddenly spoke to me.
“Yuusuke-kun! Let’s have saury for dinner tonight! Or salmon! Or mackerel!!”
“Haha! Sure, that sounds good. But… if we eat until we’re stuffed here at the buffet, will you still have room for dinner?”
“It’s fine! I’ve got a separate stomach for sweets, after all! Now then! Since dinner is decided, I’m going to eat plenty – but just the right amount!”
With that, Hiyori-san began piling her plate high with the autumn-limited sweets one after another.
The smile she wore as she enjoyed both this day and the bountiful flavours of autumn was one of pure happiness.
…but little did I know then.
That in just a few days, a harsh reality would come to strike her down.
