Encountered a Classmate’s Relationship Drama.
“What do you mean? Explain it to me in detail!”
I, Ogami Yuusuke, heard that voice while waiting for my takeaway order at a burger shop, having just finished a short-term job.
The voice, filled with tension and anger, made me turn around instinctively. I gasped when I saw who it was.
Seated at a table in the corner of the shop was Nanase Hiyori, a classmate from the high school I started attending this spring.
Standing at just under 150 cm, with a cute and delicate appearance, her cute features, a bright, somewhat childlike vibe, and a figure that belied that appearance, she had gained popularity among some of the boys.
But now, Nanase-san, with her short, bobbed black hair in disarray and a stern expression on her face, was sitting across from our classmate Kouma Yoshihide, engaged in a tense conversation.
Though I knew it was wrong, curiosity got the better of me, and I strained to hear what they were saying. In a trembling voice, Nanase-san pressed Kouma for answers.
“What do you mean you’re seeing another girl!? Are you cheating on me? Is that it!?”
“Well… yeah, something like that.”
A small “Wow…” escaped my lips before I could stop it. It seemed they were in a relationship, and now, having been caught cheating, Kouma had brought them to this intense confrontation.
Although we’d only been in high school for a short time, I never sensed anything like this between them. I was surprised they had managed to hide their relationship so well. As I processed this, Nanase-san, her tone subdued, asked another question.
“…Since when have you been seeing Shibamura-san?”
“Since last summer, I guess…”
“Last summer? That’s when we started dating! What’s going on here? Does she know that you’re dating me!?”
“Well, yeah. I told her I was dating you, but she kept confessing to me, saying she didn’t mind being second, and so…”
“So you’ve been two-timing!? You’ve been deceiving me… for over half a year?”
The way Nanase-san’s voice shook had changed. Earlier, it had trembled with anger, but now, it was from shock, as if she were completely stunned.
Of course, she would be devastated. Her boyfriend had been lying to her for nearly a year.
This wasn’t just a moment of weakness—a careless mistake. Kouma had deliberately, knowingly betrayed her. Even as an outsider, I couldn’t help but feel anger towards him. Meanwhile, Nanase-san muttered softly,
“I knew that you were popular. Even after starting high school, you were being approached by various girls… If you had just said that… you developed feelings for someone else, I could have accepted that. But this… this is just too much!!”
“B-But, it’s not like I stopped liking you, Hiyori. And it’s not like I’ve decided if Shibamura-san is better than you or anything, I just… I mean, well…”
“What…? Are you seriously asking me to accept the fact that you’ve been two-timing me and continue this relationship as if nothing happened?!”
Nanase’s voice brimmed with anger again. Of course, she was right. There was no way anyone could expect to keep a relationship going after being caught cheating.
Even though I had already received my order, I couldn’t help but stay and listen to their conversation in silence, when suddenly, Kouma began to say something completely unbelievable.
“Well, um… actually, to be honest, Shibamura-san… she let me, you know, touch her chest.”
“…What?”
“After exams, she invited me out to celebrate because we both got into the same high school. And, well, she told me that once we’re in high school, she’d let me do even more. I mean, you wouldn’t want to lose to Shibamura-san, would you?”
“…”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Even from a distance, it was clear that Nanase’s spirit was rapidly being crushed.
Her boyfriend had not only deceived her for nearly a year but was now confessing to physically cheating on her with the other girl. She must have been deeply hurt.
However, as much as I wanted to intervene and help Nanase, I hesitated. Jumping into their conversation would probably complicate things. As I stood there, wondering whether I should step in, Kouma dealt the final blow.
“I mean, if you’re that upset, it just shows that you still like me, right? So… you know, why not let me touch your chest too?”
“…Huhhh?”
“The thing with Shibamura-san just… kind of happened because of the mood. But the truth is, I really like you, Hiyori! I think you’re cute, and your chest is big too! So, come on, just let me do something a little naughty! You wouldn’t want me to dump you, right? Come on!?”
I realized something in that moment: when a person gets truly angry, they can become frighteningly calm. At the same time, I felt an overwhelming need to make the guy saying such horrible things understand just how awful he was being.
It was pure shamelessness. And on top of that, he had the nerve to imply that he only cared about her looks and body. It was disgusting, to say the least.
Was that really something you say to the girlfriend you’ve hurt and betrayed? Just as I was about to step forward and confront them—
“Come on, please! Just once—Uwaaaa!?”
With a loud splash, Nanase-san had removed the lid from the cup on the table and poured its contents all over Kouma. Soaked in purple juice and ice, his shirt drenched and stained, Kouma sat there wide-eyed, stunned. Nanase, her voice trembling, forced out her words.
“You’re… the worst!!”
“Ah…!?”
Tears silently fell from her eyes, but she was barely holding herself together, desperately trying not to break down completely. That was all she could take.
With a single whispered word, filled with anguish, anger, sadness, and despair, she ran out of the shop without looking back.
“H-Hiyori…!”
Kouma reached out his hand towards her, but it was clear he had no intention of following. In fact, he seemed too embarrassed by the stares of the other customers, frozen in place.
Whether he chased after her or not didn’t matter to me. There was no way I could just leave her like that.
I rushed out of the shop, frantically searching for her small figure. Finally, I found her curled up near the entrance of a nearby park, and I shouted her name.
“Nanase-san!!”
“Huh? O-Ogami-kun…?”
Crying and curled up even smaller than her usual petite figure, Nanase-san looked up at me, surprised. I had followed her without thinking, unable to just leave her alone, but now that I was here, I had no idea what to do next. Seeing her red, tear-streaked eyes, I awkwardly averted my gaze and mumbled,
“Uh, uh… do you want a burger?”
—And that was how I managed to start such a pitiful conversation.
