Chapter 3: I Want to Drink Miso Soup Made by My Step-Sister Every Day
“I’m full. Let’s go to karaoke now.”
After leaving the restaurant, I head to the karaoke box with Kinoka-neesan.
I’m a bit nervous about going to karaoke with my elder sister for the first time.
“Oh, this one just opened, right? Let’s go.”
“Yeah.”
The two of us enter the newly opened karaoke box nearby and are shown to our room.
(Just the two of us, me and Kinoka-neesan… well, we’re always alone at home, too.)
I was a bit nervous about being alone in a closed room with her, but since we’re always alone at home, it’s a bit too late to be so flustered now.
“What should I sing… oh, what about drinks?”
“Oolong tea.”
“Okay. We’ll have oolong tea, please.”
After ordering the drinks, Kinoka-neesan inputs the song of her favorite idol and starts singing.
I think it’s the first time I’ve seen her sing, and she’s pretty good.
It’s not at a professional level, but for an amateur, her voice is clear and her tempo is good, and I can’t help but be captivated by her singing.
“Come on, Haru-kun, you sing too.”
“Ah. I’m not very good at singing, though.”
“What’s that? Didn’t you say you wanted to go to karaoke?”
“Auhm, was that the case? Ehehe.”
Even though I invited her, it’s weird for me to not sing, so I input a famous J-pop song and start singing.
I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of Kinoka-neesan, but she looks happy as she watches me sing, even though I’m not very good at it.
“Clap, clap, clap. Hehe, you’re not bad.”
“Really? Kinoka-neesan is clearly better than me.”
“I’m not that good. My music grades weren’t that great either.”
I don’t know about that.
I’ve always thought her music grades were pretty good.
“Haru-kun, you don’t like going to karaokes?”
“I go with my friends sometimes.”
“Me too. I went alone once, and you know, solo karaoke is surprisingly fun.”
It seems like the so-called “hitori-kara” (solo karaoke), but I don’t think I’d be doing something as bold as going to a karaoke alone anytime soon.
“You don’t go to karaoke with your girlfriend?”
“I don’t. Is that bad?”
“It’s not bad, but I think it would be better if you went with her instead of me.”
“That’s not true! I wanted to go with Kinoka-neesan in the first place.”
“Huh?”
Ah! I almost said it…
(What do I do?)
I think what I just said was basically a confession, but should I just go for it and say I like her…?
But maybe it’s not something I should say on purpose at karaoke.
I can confess to her anytime I want when we’re alone at home…
“Oh~ So you wanted to go with Onee-chan~”
“I-It should be fine once in a while…”
“Ehehe, you’re right. Yeah, I’m also happy that I was able to go here with you, Haru-kun.”
Kinoka-neesan said that with a dazzling, bashful smile, and I felt a thrill when I saw her smile.
Oh, she’s so cute… I like this person.
I don’t want to give her to anyone…
“Hey, let’s sing something together.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah…”
While I was lost in Kinoka-neesan’s smile, she sat next to me with the tablet and showed me a list of duets.
“Duets are a bit embarrassing.”
“It doesn’t have to be a duet song, let’s sing something together.”
“Ah…, then, just put in something you think I might like.”
“What’s that? You’re being careless.”
Kinoka-neesan’s body was pressed against mine, and I was suddenly excited, unable to look her in the face.
The sweet scent of her perfume was also wafting, and I couldn’t help but focus on her face, and I was having a hard time controlling my reasoning.
“Hey, Kinoka-neesan.”
“What?”
“Umm… I mean… um… how about we go out and do something fun again.”
“Huh? What’s with you all of a sudden?”
“Ah, well… haha, lately I’ve been busy with part-time work, so I haven’t been able to go out and relax much. I just wanted to go out and have some fun with you, Kinoka-nee-san, to blow off some steam.”
I tried to confess, but I hesitated, and I ended up saying that instead.
Oh no… As I thought, it’s not so easy.
If I confessed, we’d probably end up in an awkward relationship, and if that happened, I wouldn’t be able to stay at home anymore.
“Of course it’s alright, but, is it even fun being with someone like me?”
“It’s fun. I have the most fun when I’m with Kinoka-neesan, yeah.”
“Hehe, is that so? Thank you. I have a modeling job tomorrow, but I’m free next weekend, so let’s go on another date then.”
“Uh, okay.”
Kinoka-neesan can say the word “date” more casually than I can, so she probably doesn’t see me as more than a brother.
I don’t mind for now, but I don’t want us to stay like this forever.
“So, let’s sing this together. We’re almost out of time, but do you want to extend?”
“No, I’m good.”
“Is that so? I’ll input it now then.”
I sing a duet with Kinoka-neesan, and our first karaoke date comes to an end.
It ended up with me having done no progress, but I’m really a coward…
“Hmm, we had fun. Oh, be careful with the eggs.”
“Yeah.”
After leaving the karaoke store, the two of us go grocery shopping for dinner, and I put the ingredients we bought at the supermarket in the fridge.
“I’ll make dinner today, so look forward to it.”
“Hehe, I’m really looking forward to it.”
“Yeah. It’s grilled fish, but I know you like salmon en papillote, right?”
Usually, I make dinner, but today, Kinoka-neesan is making dinner, which is a bit of a rare occurrence, so I’m a little excited.
“Hmm, hum ♪”
Kinoka-neesan, dressed in an apron, sings a tune in the kitchen as she prepares dinner.
This sight is like us being a newlywed couple, but me and Kinoka-neesan are already like a married couple in reality, aren’t we?
No, that’s a bit too much isn’t it…? But I want us to be like that someday.
“Hehe, how’s my cooking?”
“It’s delicious.”
At dinner, I eat the food Kinoka-neesan made, and it’s still much better than mine.
She used to make it all the time, but she’s been busy with work lately, so I’ve been doing it instead, but I want to eat her cooking frequently.
“Hey, Kinoka-neesan.”
“What’s up?”
“Well… um, I just wanted to say that I want to keep eating the food Kinoka-neesan makes.”
“Huh?”
“No, I mean… I mean, I’ve always wanted to try your cooking again because it’s delicious. I know you’re busy with work, but you’re better than me. I want to drink your miso soup every day.”
“Hehe, what’s that? Okay. I can’t do it every day, but I’ll make it for you as much as I can.”
I meant it as an indirect proposal, but Kinoka-neesan readily agreed, and I was relieved for now.
I told myself that her home cooking was something only I could eat, and another day came to a peaceful end.
