- Chapter 51: Flower Crown.
Flower Crown.
“That was delicious! Tsubame-chan, you’re amazing! I didn’t expect you to know a place like this!”
“I came here once before and the manager told me about it. There’s a really good restaurant nearby.”
After our shopping was done, we had lunch at a nearby café. Their pasta was incredible. It’s one of those hidden gems—well-known to those in the know but never featured in TV shows or magazines. Prices were reasonable too. I loved it.
“You know, when I think about it, Tsubame probably knows tons of places—restaurants, tourist spots, and all.”
“Yeah, quite a few actually. …But from now on, Shigure-kun, you’ll be discovering a lot of them too.”
“That’s true. I’ll probably be tagging along often. I’m looking forward to it.”
It’s mostly for work, sure… but if we have time, maybe we can squeeze in a little sightseeing too.
“Um, could we join too? From time to time?”
“Of course. I’ll have to check with the manager though… Oh, but I wonder how it’d work with booking hotel rooms. Could we even get an extra room?”
“N-No, no, we can’t expect you to go that far for us! It’s totally fine! It’s just a trip or two!”
“…Yeah. I’ve got a part-time job too, so it’s fine.”
Shirao’s voice was so quiet I could barely catch it. Come to think of it, he said he sometimes helps out at a family-run restaurant.
“Really? But maybe if I talk to someone—”
“No, really! It’s fine! And since it’d be a trip with Shirao-kun too, it’ll only be once over summer break or something like that!”
Se-chan gave a quick wink. …I guess she’s trying to say, “We won’t get in your way.” And to be fair, we did talk quite a bit the other day.
“Got it. It actually sounds fun, going on a group trip like that. I’ll let you know whenever we’re going somewhere far.”
“Yay! Thank you!”
Tsubame’s calm, gentle aura seemed to spread to everyone. Even Se-chan had a warm smile on her face.
“Alright then, let’s go.”
“Yeah. I’ve been looking forward to this.”
“It’s the place Tsubame-chan said she wanted to go, right? I can’t wait, Shirao-kun!”
“Yeah. We haven’t really gone that far on our own dates.”
“I mean, I still love our home dates too, though!”
Tsubame smiled as Se-chan squeezed Shirao’s hand proudly.
And so, we all headed to the place Tsubame had wanted to visit.
“Wowwwww! It’s so beautiful! And it smells amazing! I’ve only ever seen this in videos!”
“…This is crazy. It’s huge.”
A vast flower field stretched out before us. The flowers bloomed in rows by color, as if responding to the sunlight—radiating life and energy.
It felt less like being in a foreign country and more like stepping into another world. Surreal. Like we had wandered into the pages of a picture book.
This is the place Tsubame had mentioned. A famous national park known for its massive flower fields.
Of course, I’d seen it in the magazine she was featured in. But seeing it in person was something else entirely. Back then, the focus had been on Tsubame in the photos anyway.
“I remember thinking, one day I’d love to show this to you, Shigure-kun. …Back then, I never imagined I’d want to show it to my friends too, but now I do.”
“I’m glad. I’m really happy I got to come here with you all.”
We locked eyes, and Tsubame giggled softly. Compared to how she was in the beginning, she’s changed so much—truly, beautifully.
She’s even able to taste food again, bit by bit. Her expressions are livelier. And she’s made friends.
I let out a soft breath, as if exhaling the emotion buried deep in my chest—but even that didn’t come out clean, and my vision blurred slightly.
“Shigure-kun? Are you okay?”
“…Sorry. I almost started crying just now.”
“Why?”
“…I’m not really sure.”
Was it because she can smile again, like she used to? Because she looks so genuinely happy now, unlike back then? Or maybe… it’s a sense of fulfillment, like I was able to help someone, even just a little, like back in middle school?
It could be all of those. Or none. If I tried to put it all into words, it would take far too long.
“Maybe it’s just… seeing how happy you look. That’s probably the closest reason.”
“Is that so? That makes me happy.”
Tsubame took a few steps forward, spun once with the flower field behind her, and held her hat down as the spring breeze played with her hair. She looked just like the cover of the magazine—same pose.
But—her expression was completely different.
“Then I’ve got to do my best too. So that Shigure-kun has lots of fun.”
“…I’m already having more fun than you can imagine, just being here with you.”
Just watching her is enough to make me happy—especially when she’s smiling.
“More, okay? Just like how Shigure-kun always tries to make me smile, I want to do the same.”
“…I see. I’m looking forward to it then.”
“Yeah. Let’s have lots of fun together.”
Tsubame held out her hand. I took it, and she squeezed it tight, smiling with joy.
And—just beside us…
“D-Did you see that?! Shirao-kun, did you see that just now?! Did we get isekai’d?! That was otherworldly levels of cuteness and beauty! If we were born in another era, she’d totally be the North Star instead!”
“S-Se-chan…”
“Hey, hey, Shirao-kun. Are we really allowed to witness something this heart-melting for free?! Shouldn’t we be selling all our internal organs just for the chance?!”
“Hey, calm d—”
“Haahhh… So cute. Tsubame-chan is just too cute. So precious. Just seeing her smile gives me enough energy to work ten years nonstop without food, sleep, or rest. She’s gorgeous in the magazine, sure, but when she’s beside Shigure-kun, she just radiates. Smiles make girls the cutest, and that’s why I really think Shigure-kun and Tsubame-chan are perfec—”
“Uh, Se-chan. They’re selling flower cookies over there. Wanna check them out later?”
“I’m in! You two are coming too, right?”
“Yeah, can’t wait.”
…Yeah. They’re the same as ever.
I thought I’d monopolized Tsubame for a bit too long, but seeing them have fun in their own way set me at ease.
“Umm… like this? Ah! I did it! Is this right?”
“Yeah, you did great, Se-chan.”
The two girls sat in a patch of grass, weaving clover stems with their hands. Tsubame moved with ease, while Se-chan watched her closely, copying her movements.
The flower fields here are mostly for viewing only. A sign at the entrance says not to touch the flowers—except in one designated area. That’s this place: the Flower Interaction Garden. Local elementary schools come here for nature studies, so the name makes sense.
This space is full of white clover, and you’re actually allowed to make flower crowns here (with a reservation). If you don’t know how, staff will teach you. But Tsubame has been making them since she was little, so she’s showing Se-chan how.
“It looks like so much fun. Se-chan’s never really done this stuff… I mean, I didn’t have anyone to do it with. I’m glad you’re here.”
“Yeah. I’m not bad with my hands, but… I can’t be a girl friend.”
Tsubame looked genuinely happy as she helped Se-chan—an expression I’d never seen before meeting her.
I know I’m close with Tsubame. I could make flower crowns with her too. But I probably couldn’t bring out this exact smile. Just like how I can joke around with Shirao easily.
“And… done! How does it look?”
“Perfect. You did great.”
While I was chatting with Shirao, it looked like their flower crowns were finished. Tsubame praised the one Se-chan made.
Then, both of them placed their crowns on their heads—and turned to us.
“Well? Shigure-kun, do I look cute?”
“H-How do I look? I-Is it weird, Shirao-kun?”
Tsubame gave me a confident smile—completely at ease.
Se-chan, on the other hand, looked nervous as she asked Shirao.
Our responses were obvious.
“Yeah… It suits you really well. You look adorable.”
“N-Not weird at all! Y-You’re really, uh, r-r-r-really c-c-cute.”
Even though we knew exactly what to say, it wasn’t easy to get the words out. Shirao stammered, but he got it out straight—and that felt very like him.
Tsubame smiled happily, and Se-chan scratched her cheek, flustered but smiling.
“Y-Yeah, now you really can’t tell which of us is the couple. …Thanks, Shirao-kun.”
“O-Of course. B-Because I’m your boyfriend, after all.”
Blushing but standing proud—he really is such a good guy.
And so, the warm, peaceful afternoon continued on in the flower fields.
