Chapter 27: No Need to Pretend Anymore
“So I would like our Douglas to have a duel with our family’s failed firstborn to demonstrate how much more capable he is compared to his older brother and to explain why we have decided to pass the family legacy to him instead. Essentially, the winner of today’s duel will become the successor of the Kvist family. However, as I mentioned earlier, unless something miraculous occurs, he will almost certainly be the one to inherit the family legacy.”
After my father finished his long speech about how my younger brother Douglas is superior and I am incompetent to the guests, he gestured to the servants to bring the weapons for the mock battle.
“However, I am not a devil, so as a father, I would like to give my eldest son, who doesn’t even have one weapon, a wooden sword and a magic wand as a first and final gift, free of charge.”
Then, as per my father’s instruction, a servant brought the wooden sword and the magic wand, and instead of handing them to me, he threw them at my feet.
Although his attitude shows that even the servants look down on me, it doesn’t matter anymore. They are all going to get fired anyway.
“What’s wrong? You don’t like it? If you don’t take them, you will have to fight your brother with your bare hands, you know?”
Seeing me not picking up the wooden sword and wand that fell on the ground, my father smirked and said such things.
I don’t need to pretend anymore, so it’s okay to talk back.
However, at this point, it’s unlikely that these foolish people, so caught up in their excitement, will even notice my discomfort and will stop to belittle me. My response will likely only provoke their anger and further fuel their desire to bully me.
“Ha? There’s no need for a wooden sword or magic wand against my younger brother. And as for you, Father, let’s make a clear agreement while you still hold the same views. As you just said, the contract is straightforward: ‘The winner of this mock battle will inherit the Kvist family.’ There shouldn’t be any issues, right?”
As I spoke up, nobody around me expected me to retort, and a moment of silence followed before laughter erupted.
“I always knew you were foolish, but I didn’t expect you to be this unintelligent. Fine, we’ll make the contract you suggested. However, since you can barely wield magic, a document with magic formulas that doesn’t require magic usage would be necessary for you to make a contract. I doubt you have such a document. We could have made the contract right here if it were possible, but it’s already decided that your younger brother will inherit, so there’s no point in wasting time with such a contract. It’s just your way of stalling for time, but it’s a waste.”
