Chapter 147: I Regret It Now
“That’s…”
“See? You’re lost for words. That’s precisely why I came here.”
I want to shout and deny Gaius’s words, but the words of denial won’t come out, and I find myself stumbling over my speech.
In response, Gaius had a smug expression as if to say, ‘Isn’t it just as I said?’ He explained that he came here precisely because he was concerned about my residents, who I’ve been treating with contempt.
“Don’t mock me!! I can handle something like that without your help!! And besides, it’s about my own country! Foreigners should keep their noses out of our affairs and not meddle without permission!!”
“Huh? Like that? Well then, what? Haven’t you done something along those lines before, dismissing it as ‘like that’?”
“Argh!!”
Gaius’s words are infuriating at every turn. However, it’s my own inability to retort against those words that infuriate me the most.
“Well, fine. Since I’m only interested in Prevost, I’ll leave the other bothersome matters to you.”
“What!? What do you intend to do with my country’s nobles? Could it be… you like individuals like Prevost!?”
“Like, huh… Well. I must admit individuals like Prevost do pique my interest. I plan to pay a visit to Prevost’s estate shortly. I already sent you a letter outlining the legitimacy of my intentions for visiting Prevost’s estate and obtained a reply letter from you with the sign of approval and your seal before you came here. But could it be that you haven’t read that letter?”
“Guh… ah, Huh. Letter, you mean? Ah, that letter. Yes, there was indeed something written along those lines.”
I wonder why?
I’ve harboured quite a strong sense of frustration toward Gaius until now. However, as I imagine Gaius liking Prevost, pursuing an intricate relationship at Prevost’s estate, and Prevost, despite being from another country, unable to refuse the position of the Emperor that Gaius holds… These thoughts start to run wild, and my feelings of anger seem to dissipate.
This is an entirely new emotion for me.
By the way, Gaius did mention a letter, and I do recall receiving it. However, at the time, I was incredibly fatigued, and the letter had already gone through one round of censorship. It was more of a ‘I generally confirm the contents and stamp it with my seal, and depending on the content, decide whether to respond’ sort of thing rather than an urgent or antagonistic message.
Regrettably, now I find myself lamenting that I hadn’t thoroughly reviewed its contents.
