Chapter 140: Still Mentally Holding On
“Huh? Wha!? You’re kidding… right!?”
As I surveyed my surroundings, it became clear that I was no longer in the room I had been in before; I had moved to a different room.
However, even though the room had changed, it was still too early to believe that I had truly come all the way to the Empire.
“It might sound like a lie. I suppose it’s difficult to prove that this is really the Empire, but you’ll come to accept it within a week.”
Kaisar-sama responded to my statement without anger. He reassured me that it was understandable for me to think that way.
Realizing that Kaisar-sama’s words suggested that I didn’t trust him, I immediately apologized,
“I-I’m terribly sorry! Despite having just apologized earlier, I find myself speaking doubtfully to Kaisar-sama once again—”
“It’s fine, really. I know it’s not slander or anything, and I won’t punish you for something minor like that. Besides, I understand that even I wouldn’t readily believe someone who suddenly claims to have come from the Holy Kingdom to the Empire.”
Even though I had just apologized for that matter a moment ago, I thought that making the same mistake again without a pause would surely be unforgivable. However, Kaisar-sama didn’t show any anger; on the contrary, he said he understood my feelings.
I’ve never encountered a noble like him in the Holy Kingdom. The nobles there are generally either preying on the weak like Prevost, indulging in cruelty or drowning in alcohol and debauchery, seemingly driven by various desires.
Perhaps it’s because I, being an orphan in a vulnerable position, have only encountered such nobles. Even so, I couldn’t help but think that the nobles of the Holy Kingdom shouldn’t be like that despite them being from such a country.
While there are certainly nobles who donate and build orphanages, most do it solely to satisfy their own vanity. The majority simply donate or build and consider it done. Otherwise, they’re nothing more than scoundrels like Prevost.
As I pondered, I realized I didn’t even know if Kaisar-sama was a noble. Well, he must be a noble without a doubt, especially since he’s on such familiar terms with Emperor Gaius. Yet, even I, for all my insights, am quite ignorant regarding nobles from other countries. I have no idea what rank the Kvist family holds.
Could it be that sometimes, ignorance is better for one’s mental well-being?
“Just so you know, while my family is a ducal house, you needn’t worry about such things. Feel free to use any amenities in the guest room designated for you, including the ones prepared specifically for long-term stays.”
