Chapter 137: There’s No Way I’d Let Them Escape
◆
[Hildegard’s POV]
His Majesty Gaius might truly be acting with the intention of helping me, yet this very fact stirs up feelings of anger within me toward him. If only His Majesty Gaius had visited for inspection even just a month earlier, perhaps I wouldn’t have become a pawn in Prevost’s schemes.
Now, it’s simply too late to say anything else. No matter what, it’s painfully overdue.
Before long, given it’s Prevost we’re talking about, I’m certain that within a week’s time, he will come to me again. This time, taking me to his estate to ensure His Majesty Gaius won’t interfere with him.
In fact, that day might even be tomorrow.
Undoubtedly, telepathy magic, allowing communication with those far away, is a formidable power. Just that alone would eliminate the need for messengers or familiars to convey information, effectively cutting the time required to deliver messages from the Holy Kingdom to the Empire by about half. Kaisar-sama could reach the Holy Kingdom in approximately half the time.
However, the reality is that summoning this supposed Kaisar-sama, someone currently in the Imperial magic academy, no matter how quickly we act, wouldn’t make it in time. It’s too late now.
Why didn’t he come sooner, for heaven’s sake? If he were going to help, he should have at least said something like, “I’ll shelter you until Kaisar-sama arrives.”
Still, I couldn’t help but direct my frustration towards His Majesty Gaius in my thoughts. Even though I could be considered a saint, I understand that sheltering a mere orphan like me could lead to all sorts of rumours, so such a thing is simply not possible.
And yet, even if His Majesty Gaius were to assign some of his guards to protect me, it wouldn’t be enough to shield me from Prevost, a prominent noble from the Holy Kingdom. If I were to oppose Prevost at that point, it could lead to a diplomatic issue, igniting an unnecessary conflict.
“So, who am I supposed to protect again?”
“This lady is known as the Holy Maiden. Her name is Hildegard.”
“Good grief… More trouble, as always. If it’s a result of the stress-relief methods I taught, I bear some responsibility… But let’s keep it to a level that won’t cause a diplomatic incident. Also, I suppose it’s because I’ve come across some rotten individuals that I’ve gotten myself involved with this troublesome affair. Crush those scoundrels you’ve decided to crush, without a doubt.”
“Of course, Kaisar-sama. I’m practically boiling over with the urge to storm into Prevost’s estate right now and crush him. There’s absolutely no way I’ll let him escape.”
