- Chapter 7: Love and Such
After that day, my personal belongings stopped disappearing.
In fact, everything that had once been lost was returned to me.
Everything was neatly returned, from my indoor shoes to textbooks, notebooks, and mechanical pencils.
What exactly had happened?
Or rather, the fact that they were returned means they were indeed stolen. But why were they returned to me?
There was another thing that concerned me.
…This mechanical pencil, while the design and brand are the same, somehow feels different from the one I used to have.
“Anyway, it’s good that they’ve been returned.”
Well, but as Tsukimiya-san said, all’s well that ends.
“By the way, have you heard about Kageyama-san from the class next door?”
“What happened?”
“Her hair was black until yesterday, but when she came to school this morning, it was completely white.”
“Really? I wonder what happened.”
“I don’t know. It doesn’t seem to be an illness. Everyone’s saying she looks like a different person as if her hair was bleached.”
Hair turns completely white overnight.
When I heard that story, I was reminded of a scene from a manga.
Confronting an overwhelmingly powerful opponent, the sheer terror turns someone’s hair white – a typical expression in battle manga.
But this probably has nothing to do with our situation.
“Aiji-kun, you were close with Kageyama-san, right?”
“Eh?”
“She said you helped her when she had anemia.”
“Oh, that’s right.”
I suddenly remembered.
“Indeed, that did happen. But I didn’t know her name. So, she’s Kageyama-san.”
“You didn’t remember her name?”
“We didn’t introduce ourselves to each other.”
I said.
“Unless you’re in the same club or were in the same class in the first year, you wouldn’t know the names of girls next door.”
Especially since I’m a transfer student.
Just remembering the names in my class is enough for me.
“I remember almost everyone’s face and name in our grade.”
“Are you serious?”
“Do you want to go to the class next door and test me? I’ll tell you their face and name if you point at someone randomly.”
If Tsukimiya-san says so, it must be true.
Such a frightening memory.
She has maintained the top grades in our grade since enrollment. Her intellect is different from that of ordinary people.
But why?
“But, I see. That’s reassuring.”
Tsukimiya-san put her hand to her mouth and smiled softly.
“So, Aiji-kun and Kageyama-san were just that close. I thought the two of you were much closer.”
“?”
Why Does Tsukimiya-san Need to Be Relieved?
I wondered why it would be a problem if Kageyama-san and I were close. Could it be that Tsukimiya-san has feelings for me…?
Such a dubious thought crossed my mind for a moment, but I immediately dismissed it. A high-caliber girl like her having feelings for me was out of the question.
After all, I only seem to attract girls with issues.
“Haaa~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~”
Just then, a sigh deeper than the Mariana Trench reached my ears. Turning, I saw Yokawa-san sprawled out on her desk. Her body was limp like a boiled octopus.
“Haaa~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~”
“Yokawa-san, what’s wrong?”
“She looks like she wants attention.”
“I want attention~. I want someone to listen to my complaints~. And after agreeing with everything, I want Shiika to pat me on the head and comfort me~.”
“You just said it all, didn’t you?”
Tsukimiya-san chuckled wryly.
“Can’t be helped. What’s up?”
“Eh? Nothing in particular.”
“If you have the energy to play around, I don’t need to listen.”
“No, no! I want you to listen! Shiika-sama, don’t abandon me~!”
Yokawa-san tried to cling to Tsukimiya-san, who was about to turn away. They were truly in sync. They must be close.
“I became unemployed as of yesterday.”
“She quit her part-time job at the family restaurant.”
Tsukimiya-san added.
“Why? You said the work and the people there were great.”
“That’s the thing~.”
Yokawa-san then opened up about why she quit. Initially, both the job and the relationships were great. However, a turning point came when a male college student at her workplace developed feelings for her, eventually confessing. Yokawa-san politely declined. She thought he was nice but couldn’t date him. The matter was resolved.
However, the college student, unable to handle the rejection, quit his job. A girl who secretly liked him blamed Yokawa-san, making the workplace environment unbearable for her leading to her resignation.
“That must have been tough.”
Tsukimiya-san sympathized, patting Yokawa-san, who was clinging to her thigh.
“But Hina, didn’t something similar happen before? During our first year, when a boy who liked your friend confessed to you, things got awkward?”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“Hina, you’re popular, aren’t you?”
“But I’m not interested in romance.”
Yokawa-san said and then continued,
“Everyone always talks about wanting a boyfriend, but I don’t understand. Are love and romance really that great?”
She then turned to me.
“What do you think, Aiji-kun?”
“You’re asking the wrong person,” I replied.
“You don’t need to have been in a relationship to have liked someone, right?”
“The assumption that I’ve never been in a relationship is a bit irksome, but I’ve never really been romantically interested in anyone.”
Sure, I’ve thought someone was cute or beautiful.
But that’s different from love or romance. I’ve never felt romantic affection for a specific person. Love and romance can drive people crazy. I’ve experienced that more than anyone. Maybe that’s why I’ve unconsciously sealed those feelings away. But explaining that wouldn’t be understood.
“What about Tsukimiya-san?” I changed the subject.
“Shiika gets confessed to a lot, too, but she seems to turn them all down like Hina. Maybe she doesn’t understand love or romance either?”
“Not really. I think loving someone is wonderful,” Tsukimiya-san murmured, placing a hand on her chest with a dreamy expression.
“Loving someone makes every day so much richer.”
“Eh. What’s with that reaction? Doesn’t sound like you’ve experienced it.”
Yokawa-san was skeptical.
“Do you have someone you like right now?”
“Fufu. That’s a secret.♪”
“Ehh? I’m curious!”
Not just Yokawa-san but all the boys in the class perked up their ears. Everyone seemed to hope the person she liked was them, but I wasn’t so arrogant.
After that, the topic dominated the class discussions.
