- Chapter 31: Visiting Yokawa-san
Afterward, Tsukimiya-san, holding my hand by my side, headed to school around 3:30 p.m. when all the classes were finished.
There was a class committee meeting after school today.
She was attending it.
With me down with a fever and Tsukimiya-san here, too, our class would be left with no one to attend.
Though someone else could be appointed as a proxy, it felt inconsiderate.
Initially, Tsukimiya-san intended to do just that, but she decided to attend the meeting upon sensing my feeling of responsibility.
“I’ll be back soon.”
Leaving those words behind, Tsukimiya-san left the room.
Fortunately, having slept soundly in the morning, I wasn’t sleepy.
Nor would I be dragged into a nightmare.
However, the fever persisted, and chills clung to my body despite the early summer. I involuntarily hugged my shoulders and curled up inside the futon.
After a while, the intercom rang.
Could Tsukimiya-san have returned? But isn’t it too soon? Besides, I had given her a spare key when she left.
Rising, I cautiously opened the front door.
“Oh, Aiji-kun, you’re awake.”
Yokawa-san stood in her school uniform, likely on her way home.
“Yokawa-san…”
“Ah~! That’s great~!”
The next moment, I was suddenly hugged.
“Hey!?”
“I heard you collapsed because of a fever. I sent a message on Ruin but got no reply. I thought maybe I had upset you.”
“The power on my smartphone was off.”
Hearing my words, Yokawa-san sighed in profound relief, and then, realizing something, she chuckled wryly.
“—but that’s not good, right? You’re running a fever. I brought some things you might need as a get-well gesture.”
Yokawa-san showed me the shopping bag she was holding.
“Can I come in?”
“Ah, yes.”
I opened the door wider to let her in.
Taking off her loafers, Yokawa-san stepped inside and asked, “Is Shiika here too?”
“Eh?”
“Shiika was absent from school today without notice. That’s never happened before. I thought maybe she was here at your place.”
“She was here until a little while ago, but she’s not anymore.”
I explained the situation.
“She’s attending the class committee meeting after school.”
“So, she did come here. I was thinking of leaving early, too. I wondered if I should take notes for Aiji-kun as well.”
Yokawa-san handed me her notes with a “here.”
“You even took notes for world history?”
World history classes are notoriously sleepy.
Yokawa-san usually sleeps through them.
“I wanted to make Aiji-kun happy. The power of love, maybe?”
Yokawa-san smirked, half-joking.
I turned on the smartphone that had been off beside my pillow. The notification count on the Ruin app icon popped up.
“Three hundred…”
And they were all from Yokawa-san.
“Ah, you don’t have to read them, okay? They’re kind of heavy, or rather, I wrote a lot of embarrassing stuff.”
Yokawa-san laughed shyly.
I didn’t have the mental capacity to digest this volume of messages fully. I heed her advice and seal them away in the digital ether.
“How much was the stuff you bought? I’ll pay you back.”
“Oh, no need for that. I did it because I wanted to.”
“But…”
“Consider it a favor.♪”
Yokawa-san chuckled with a finger raised.
“I’ll have you return the favor in some way or another.”
I’ve incurred another debt. Hopefully, she won’t demand something outrageous.
“You had work later, right?”
“Yeah. So I’ll head out in about an hour. Aiji-kun, you should rest. If you overdo it and your fever rises again, it would be trouble.”
I crawled back into bed and covered myself with the futon.
“There’s fruit. I’ll peel it for you.”
Yokawa-san said, “I’ll borrow the kitchen,” and walked off. In about five minutes, she returned with a beautifully cut apple on a plate shaped like a rabbit.
“Here. Ahh.”
Yokawa-san offered me an apple slice on a toothpick.
“…Is eating by myself not an option?”
“Nope. The sick shouldn’t strain themselves.”
I obediently opened my mouth and chewed the apple.
“Is it good?”
“Yeah. It’s juicy and delicious.”
“That’s good.”
Yokawa-san blushed and then said, “I’ll take one too,” before spearing another piece of apple with the toothpick she had used to feed me and biting into it.
“It is good.”
The crisp sound was pleasing to hear. Yokawa-san, noticing me curled up, asked, “What’s wrong, Aiji-kun? Why are you curled up?”
“I feel a bit chilly.”
“…Hmm. I see.”
After thinking momentarily, Yokawa-san smiled mischievously as if she had a brilliant idea.
“Then, I’ll warm you up.”
“Eh?”
Yokawa-san lifted the futon and slid into the bed. Before I knew it, she had snuggled up close and hugged me tightly.
—What?!
“How’s that? Warm…?”
“Well, it’s warm, but if we’re this close, might you not catch my cold…?”
“No worries. I don’t catch colds. You know, they say fools and something don’t catch colds. That.”
Yokawa-san laughed. Shouldn’t she refrain from implying the ‘fool’ part?
“Besides, I’m sweating from the fever.”
“That’s true. I can smell the scent of your cold…♪”
Yokawa-san buried her face in my neck and murmured happily. She didn’t seem to mind at all. She seemed pleased. And she smelled incredibly nice.
Though our uniforms separated us, the feel of our bodies touching was comforting. Despite not having a fever, Yokawa-san’s body was as warm as a heat mass.
Being hugged, the chill I felt gradually faded.
Realizing this, Yokawa-san whispered to me with a smile.
“I’ll stay like this for a bit longer…♪”
Until it was time for her to go to work.
It was truly fortunate that Tsukimiya-san didn’t walk in on us.
Seeing us like this would have led to a dramatic scene.
