- Chapter 3: The Radiant Girl
During a sleepy break time, drowsiness still lingering, I was taking a nap with my face on the desk.
“Huh? What’s that about? Are you picking a fight?”
In the peaceful classroom, a sharp voice suddenly cut through. What’s going on? I lifted my head to grasp the situation around me.
The girls were glaring at each other, creating a tense atmosphere. I asked a nearby student, and apparently, one girl’s bragging about her boyfriend seemed like showing off to the other, who had just been dumped. The situation escalated when she casually suggested the other girl move on and find a new boyfriend.
The air was charged, and the other students watched in tense silence, not daring to intervene.
“Come on, both of you, let’s calm down.”
A girl with brightly dyed golden hair and a neatly made-up face stepped in. Her stylishly casual uniform gave her an air of sophistication. She was radiant in both looks and intellect.
Her name was Hina Yokawa.
With her beautiful looks and bright personality, she naturally became the center of attention in the class. She was close friends with Shiika Tsukimiya, and they were often compared to the moon and the sun.
“I get that you’re upset, but Rui didn’t mean any harm and was just trying to be encouraging. Forgive her, will you? For my cuteness’ sake.”
Hina Yokawa, jokingly, put her arms around the shoulders of the two girls, diffusing the tension with a laugh.
“Sorry, I was a bit insensitive.”
“…I might have overreacted too.”
The girls seemed to soften, exchanging words of regret, the hostility in their expressions now replaced by embarrassment.
“Wait, Hina, what was that line about ‘forgive me for my cuteness’?”
“That annoyed me.”
“Huh? What? I am cute, aren’t I? Wanna fight about it?”
Yokawa, jokingly adopting a fighting stance and playfully jabbing the air, elicited laughter from everyone, swiftly resolving the tense situation with her incredible social skills.

After finishing my convenience store-bought deli bread during lunch break, I headed to the vending machine near the cafeteria for a drink.
I stood before one of the two vending machines, browsing the options.
Yogurt tea or café au lait?
Oh, there’s a new product.
“Dopyuri Super Concentrated Milk Tea.” That’s not a name suitable for a school. How did this get approved in the Reiwa era? Were they all drunk?
Well, I won’t buy it anyway. I’m not one for unnecessary risks.
―― Alright, I’ll go with the yogurt tea.
Just as I had finally decided and was about to press the button for my choice, a hand reached behind me and pushed a different one. The light turned off, and I heard the sound of the item dropping.
As I retrieved the item from the dispenser, the girl behind me flashed a bright smile.
“Ahaha, did I surprise you?”
“Hina Yokawa…”
Hina Yokawa, the epitome of a radiant girl, talked to me, a rather unremarkable guy without any barriers.
It’s dangerously easy to develop a crush on her.
She had organized a karaoke session for the class early in the new term, and thanks to participating in that, I felt more at ease. She was like a benefactor to me.
“I saw you hesitating and thought it was funny, so I chose for you. You gotta make these decisions quickly, you know.”
“I was just about to choose the yogurt tea…”
“Really? I just pressed what I wanted without thinking. Why are you speaking so formally, though? It feels like there’s a distance between us.”
“Blinded by your radiance…”
“What’s that? Hilarious,” Yokawa laughed brightly. I had amused her twice in such a short time. I might start believing I’m a funny guy.
“Here, I’ll put in some money now, and you can buy your drink.”
Yokawa inserted some coins, and once the button lit up, she gestured for me to pick something, not treating me to it.
I bought the yogurt tea I had originally wanted and took it out.
Straightening up, I wondered what Yokawa had bought. It was the “Dopyuri Super Concentrated Milk Tea.”
“The new product…”
“Gotta try new things, right?”
Yokawa struggled to sip it due to its thickness, then laughed, “Wow, this is so rich, I can hardly drink it.”
But then she managed a strong sip,
“Wow, this is delicious!”
Her expression lit up. It was a hit.
“It’s super sweet and probably high in calories, but if you drink it daily, you might lose weight.”
That’s probably not the healthiest way to lose weight.
“Here, Yuto, try some.”
“Eh?”
“Seriously, it’s really good.”
It’s not that I doubted the taste. It’s just… this would be an indirect kiss.
Wait. If I hesitate too long, it might seem like I’m overthinking it and creep her out.
To a radiant girl like her, sharing drinks is no big deal. Keeping my composure, I sipped the super-concentrated milk tea.
“Oh, this is like an indirect kiss, isn’t it?”
Yokawa seemed to realize it just then.
I thought she wouldn’t mind, but…
“That’s kinda embarrassing.”
She smiled shyly.
That was close.
If I were a virgin, I’d have fallen for her.
…Wait, am I already falling for her?
Anyway.
She, Hina Yokawa, is another girl I interact with. But like Shiika Tsukimiya, she seems far from being troubled or sick, which is reassuring.
