- Chapter 14: The Malicious Teacher
Math class is the most depressing time of the day.
As someone fundamentally oriented towards the humanities, it’s a subject I struggle with. While I rank among the top in my grade for Japanese, I just can’t grasp math.
But more than that, it’s the teacher I can’t stand.
“Alright then. Let’s solve this problem—Aiji, you try.”
Math teacher Fujisawa Sensei calls on me with a smirk.
A man in his forties, he has naturally curly hair and a reptilian face.
At first glance, he seems sly and true to appearance. He is indeed as malicious as he looks.
“The answer is x=2 and y=3.”
I say the answer I’ve calculated.
“Oh, that’s correct.”
Good. It seems I got it right.
I feel relieved.
But it’s not over yet.
This is where Fujisawa Sensei truly shines.
“So, you must have gotten Tsukimiya to tell you the answer when I wasn’t looking,” he teases, implying I couldn’t have solved it alone.
“I solved it myself, though.”
“Now?”
He places his hand on his chin, grinning like a snake.
Tall and slender.
He looks down at me, seated in my chair, from his lofty position.
“Fujisawa Sensei, I did not show Aiji-kun the answer.”
Tsukimiya-san’s voice cuts through the distance between me and Fujisawa Sensei.
“Aiji-kun figured out the answer himself.”
“Why are you getting so worked up? It’s just a joke, a joke.”
Fujisawa Sensei, seemingly undercut, laughs it off lightly.
“If Aiji can solve it, it means anyone can. Ensure everyone gets it right if a similar question arises in the test.”
He says this spitefully and turns back to the blackboard.
I had been on Fujisawa Sensei’s radar.
It started in the first class.
I was called on to answer a question and couldn’t. Fujisawa Sensei made fun of me, and the other students laughed.
Enjoying this, Fujisawa Sensei began to mock me relentlessly.
Whenever something happened, he’d bring me up, teasing me if I got it right, like earlier, and making fun of me if I got it wrong.
Lately, it’s been escalating.
Naturally, this is quite tiresome.
The other students have long since become disenchanted, weary of the same old thing, but Fujisawa Sensei seems oblivious.
Posting a video on social media might cause a stir, but it takes considerable courage to take such a step.
So it’s dragged on to this point.
The end-of-day bell rings, and as Fujisawa Sensei leaves the classroom, I finally feel liberated.
“Fujisawa Sensei is terrible, isn’t he? Always picking on Aiji-kun.”
Tsukimiya-san, sitting to my right, speaks to me.
“Well, I’m used to it now.”
“No, it’s too much. I can’t forgive him. I’m going to protest.”
She seems angry, which is rare.
It’s unusual for Tsukimiya-san to show her emotions like this.
“Calling it a protest is a bit much. I’m grateful for your concern, but I’m not intending to stir things up, you know.”
“Even if Aiji-kun is okay with it, I can’t stand it,” Tsukimiya Shiika retorted firmly.
“I can’t forgive anyone for speaking to Aiji-kun like that.”
“Oh…?”
There was an incredible pressure in the air. She must be extremely upset. It’s not for herself, but for a classmate that she’s this angry. Tsukimiya Shiika is truly a wonderful person.

The next day, after lunch break, it was time for math class again.
…I’m probably going to be teased again.
As the class bell approached, I waited with a sense of dread. Then, Tsukimiya Shiika opened the door and entered the classroom.
“Today, Fujisawa Sensei is taking a day off, so it’s self-study.”
― Eh?
As I stood there in shock, the classroom buzzed with excitement.
Self-study is a sweet word for students. Naturally, no one focused on studying. Everyone started chatting with their friends. It was a relief not to have math class, but I was curious.
I turned to Tsukimiya Shiika, who had sat beside me.
“About yesterday, Tsukimiya-san,” I began.
“Yesterday’s issue?”
“About protesting to Fujisawa Sensei.”
I asked, “Did you go talk to him?”
“Yes, I got some time after school.”
Tsukimiya Shiika answered nonchalantly.
“I told him that his method was wrong though it’s important to conduct the class smoothly. Picking on someone specifically isn’t right.”
“And… what happened?”
“Fujisawa Sensei was very remorseful. He admitted he got carried away. He said he’s truly sorry to Aiji-kun.”
I was surprised he took it so well.
“Thank you, Tsukimiya-san. You helped me out.”
“No, not at all. It was for Aiji-kun.”
Tsukimiya Shiika, capable of taking the lead for a classmate, is the ideal class president. Her eyes looked dreamy, and I felt a certain warmth in them…
