- Chapter 13: Who Do You Like?
During lunch break, as I returned from buying a drink at the vending machine in front of the cafeteria, I was walking along the corridor of the school building that faces the courtyard.
From beyond an open window, I heard a familiar voice.
I peered in.
Facing away from me, Tsukimiya-san and Yokawa-san were sitting on a bench in the courtyard, seemingly enjoying their lunch and chatting away.
The moon and the sun are the two greatest beauties of the class.
Given the close distance between the bench where the two were sitting and the first floor of the school building, I could faintly hear their conversation.
“Recently, Hina seems to be having fun, doesn’t she?”
“Does it look that way?”
“Yeah, you seem happy. Something good happened?”
“Well, if you say something good, then yes, it’s something good. But it’s not just that. It’s like there’s both sour and sweet.”
What could it be?
From their cheerful tones alone, I could tell they were enjoying themselves.
…But eavesdropping isn’t good.
I was about to turn on my heel and leave when, just before I could, I heard Tsukimiya-san ask Yokawa-san in a teasing tone.
“Could it be you’ve got someone you like?”
“…Can you tell?”
I take back my previous thought.
I turned on my heel again and stayed put.
Yokawa-san has someone she likes!?
“Hehe, I can tell. Because your face has changed.”
Tsukimiya-san giggled.
“You’ve got the face of a girl in love.”
“No way? I hadn’t noticed at all.”
Yokawa-san said playfully,
“Remember what I said before? About not understanding what’s so great about love and romance.”
“Yeah.”
“And then you said loving someone is wonderful.”
“I did say that.”
“I think I finally understand what Shiika meant.”
I can’t see her face.
But right now, Yokawa-san must be wearing the expression of a girl in love.
I wish I could see it.
“Have you confessed?”
“Not yet.”
“Can I ask what kind of person they are?”
“Eh?”
“If you’d rather not say, that’s okay,” Tsukimiya-san said. “But in that case, I won’t be able to offer you any love advice moving forward.”
“That would be troublesome! I need Shiika to listen!”
“Then, I guess I’ll say it? But I definitely can’t say the name.”
Yokawa-san seemed resigned.
“It’s someone from my part-time job.”
What?
“It was the convenience store, right?”
“Yeah. We often have the same shifts.”
I start to search through the guys at our part-time job.
Could it be Shimada-san, Murakami-san, or perhaps Iida-kun?
Shimada-san is a handsome, highly-educated university student, so it is possible. He’s kind and considerate, a nice guy.
“What attracted you to him?”
“He’s reliable, I guess? If I’m in trouble, he helps me out. And, well, he’s pretty tough too.”
Reliable and tough—that sounds like Murakami-san?
Murakami-san is a member of the university’s powerlifting club and has even won a bodybuilding contest. His convenience store uniform is about to burst at the seams.
“Also, he says funny things with a straight face sometimes.”
Saying funny things with a straight face could also point to Iida-kun.
Iida-kun is known as a radio show’s letter writer, with numerous posts read on various late-night radio shows, making him a funny high school boy.
When we share shifts, he spends his free time writing answers to his made-up witty questions on the backs of receipts, like a madman.
Girls do like funny guys, after all.
Looking back like this, our part-time crew has some strong characters, right? Among them, I’m a background character, right?
“Hina, you love him, huh?”
Tsukimiya-san says with a fond smile.
“Just talking about it makes my face feel hot.”
Yokawa-san grabs her uniform collar and flaps it, trying to cool down.
“Since I’ve talked this much, it’s Shiika’s turn now.”
“Me?”
“You have someone you like, too, right?”
Tsukimiya-san’s love interest.
As a classmate, this is a topic of great interest.
“It wouldn’t be fair just to make Hina talk,” Tsukimiya-san said. “I’ll be vague about it, though. If that’s okay.”
“Of course!”
“My crush is in the same class.”
“Really!?”
I, too, internally exclaimed in unison with Yokawa-san.
Really!?
I had assumed it was perhaps a senior or someone. Back in middle school, the cool girls in class mostly dated guys a grade above.
“What attracted you to him?”
“Well, if I had to say… everything?”
“Everything?”
“Everything that makes up him is dear to me. His face, his voice, his body, his strengths, his flaws, all of it. It’s like I affirm his very existence.”
Tsukimiya-san’s tone was dreamy.
“When I fell for him, I realized. Ah, I see. I was born to devote myself to this person.”
“…Shiika, was that your character?”
Yokawa-san was confused by her sudden change.
I felt the same.
“But, having someone you can feel that way about is the best, isn’t it?”
“Hehe. Thank you.”
“Let’s both do our best for it to work out!”
“Yes.”
The two shared well wishes for each other’s love endeavors.
The class’s two greatest beauties, the moon and the sun, each have a guy they’re thinking of.
Who could these guys be?
