- Chapter 10: Uncle Syntax
Several weeks had passed since Yokawa-san started her part-time job at the convenience store.
We often found ourselves working the same shifts.
Yokawa-san had quickly mastered her duties, even outperforming me, who had started working there two months earlier. She had become a part of the workplace. I might have to start using honorific language with her soon.
On days we shared shifts, we’d work together right after school.
I felt we had become closer than before.
Maybe that’s why.
One day, on our way to work, Yokawa-san suddenly mentioned:
“I’ve been having some trouble with the manager lately.”
“What happened?”
“We’ve exchanged contact info with the manager for the Ruin Group, haven’t we?”
“Yeah.”
We exchanged contact details with the manager for submitting shifts and notifying absences.
“He’s been sending me messages every day like this.”
She showed me her smartphone screen.
“Oops, good evening! 😊 How’s school life going? 🏫
Is your study going smoothly? 📚 Uncle is here to support you, so feel free to share anything you’d like to talk about! Just kidding, lol.”
“This is, how should I put it, a perfect example of ‘uncle syntax.'”
The part with “just kidding, lol” was particularly artistic.
The abundance of emojis was dazzling.
“It feels wrong to ignore him, so I reply, right? Then he gets carried away and starts sending more and more messages.”
“That must be tough.”
Just reading one message gave me a sense of heartburn.
I couldn’t imagine how Yokawa-san felt receiving them daily.
“And now he’s started inviting me out for meals. I mean, the manager isn’t a bad person, but that’s just too much, right?
I gently declined, but he was persistent. Gradually, his tone became more assertive. I’m wondering what to do.”
I had feared this from the start.
The manager had taken a particular liking to Yokawa-san, hiring her based partly on her looks, and she naturally spread cheerfulness without discrimination.
This led the manager to misunderstand completely.
He might be thinking he could deepen his relationship with Yokawa-san. Maybe even date her or think something could happen beyond that.
“Quitting the job is also… you know. Just when I’ve gotten used to the work. And I get along with everyplace except for the manager.”
“Maybe you should report this to the headquarters? I think that could get him fired on the spot.”
We had proof of the Ruin’s inappropriate use of work contact for personal matters.
“It’s clearly out of line.”
“Hmm. But wouldn’t that make the manager hold a grudge against me?”
That’s a possibility.
She might end up being resented.
“I just want to settle this as peacefully as possible. I’m a pacifist, you know.”
“How about just dating him then?”
“Are you even listening? No way.”
I get a playful shove. Ouch.
Jokes aside, though.
I put my brain to work, trying to figure out a way to gently push the manager away without directing any hate toward Yokawa-san.
“Right, there’s one way we could do it.”
“Wow! How?”
“Well, Yokawa-san might have some reservations about it.”
I whispered the plan to Yokawa-san.
“Really? You’re serious?”
“Guess you don’t like it then.”
“No, it’s not that. I’m okay with the plan itself. But isn’t there a chance that you, Aiji-kun, might get hurt instead?”
“Well, there’s a possibility.”
More like it’s almost certain.
“But, it’s possible to outmaneuver the manager. So, it’s worth a shot.”
“Why would you go that far for me?”
“You came to me for advice, right? I want to help out.”
It must have taken a lot of courage for her to open up about this.
Since she asked for advice, I want to do everything I can to help.
Yokawa-san is my classmate, and she calls me her friend.
“And honestly, that manager looks down on me so much, I just want to show him up. I want to feel refreshed.”
As I said this, Yokawa-san burst out laughing.
“That’s kinda cool, but your motive is so petty, it’s hilarious.”
She laughed joyously.
Yes!
I’m glad she found it funny.
☆
I entered the office and greeted the manager.
After a dismissive reply, the manager’s attention quickly shifted to Yokawa-san, who was sitting in front of the office computer.
He was ogling her, clearly smitten.
This middle-aged man… too lecherous…
Yokawa-san responded with a smile, but her face was strained. It’s something to make someone who smiles at everyone pull such a face.
I couldn’t stand it any longer and interrupted.
“Excuse me.”
The manager glanced at me, then quickly looked away, returning his attention to Yokawa-san.
Is there such a difference in attitude between boys and girls?
He looked at me as if I were a gnat.
I stepped in front of the manager, looking down at him as he sat.
“What?”
He sounded annoyed.
“Could you please stop sending personal messages to Yokawa-san?”
“Huh?”
“You’ve been sending her messages, haven’t you?”
“I haven’t.”
The manager played dumb.
“Even if that were true, what does it have to do with you, Aiji-kun? Oh, are you jealous of an old man like me?”
He was taunting.
And he ended his sentence in an old-man syntax.
“Sending personal messages to Yokawa-san is a problem,” I said. “If I report it to the headquarters, you’ll be fired on the spot.”
“Comments like that are common on social media these days.”
The manager sighed deeply.
“Acting all righteous. Whether it’s an affair or marrying someone in their teens, it matters between those involved. Outsiders shouldn’t interfere.”
Who says that?
Marrying a high school student is legally wrong, you know?
“I’m not an outsider, though.”
“Hmm?”
“Yokawa-san and I are dating.”
“…What?”
The manager looked stunned.
“Aiji-kun, have you been browsing the site too much?”
He thought I was fantasizing.
“It’s not DLsite or FANZA.”
Then, I declared to the manager.
“We’re dating. Please stop sending messages to my girlfriend. I’m telling you, it’s bothersome.”
I said it coldly, like pushing him away.
The manager’s expression turned to shock, then anxiety, as if he were a broken machine, and he slowly turned his head towards Yokawa-san.
“Yokawa-san, you’re joking. You’re teaming up to tease me, aren’t you? There’s no way you’re dating Aiji-kun…”
Yokawa-san laughed shyly, then approached me and wrapped her arm around mine, smiling bashfully.
“He’s my boyfriend.”
“…!”
The manager’s eyes rolled back, and he fell from his chair to the floor.
“I liked her first…”
He was in shock.
Maybe now the hate will be directed at me.
Or he might be crippled by NTR.
But then again, depending on the manager’s personality, he might lash out, thinking, “How dare you toy with me.”
That would be not good.
We’ll need to keep an eye on this moving forward.
