Chapter 20: Middle School Classmate, Mukai – Part 2
T/N: Christmas special, 3 chapters
Mukai POV
When the talk turned to Yamanaka possibly being a success, the classmates at the reunion got all riled up. Especially the women. I know how it is—women of a certain age are always on the hunt for successful men.
They dream of marrying a winner to become one themselves. I’ve had my share of women like that chasing me. Pathetic. As if a success like me would ever settle down with bottom-feeders like them. Maybe a one-night fling, at best.
I don’t care about the rest of these nobodies. But why, why is Kyōka Azuma acting interested in Yamanaka too!? She should be drawn to a real success like me, not some fake rich guy!
Yamanaka’s getting swarmed by classmates and fumbling his words. Overwhelmed, he bolts for the bathroom. Even with him gone, the women keep gabbing about him. This reunion is boring as hell. It’s pissing me off.
Whatever. My goal tonight is to get Kyōka to a hotel. I’ll wrap this up and ditch this lame party. But when I look around, Kyōka’s gone. I scan the venue—nowhere. Is she in the bathroom?
I wait, but she doesn’t come back. Yamanaka’s still gone too. Time feels like it’s dragging. I keep checking my luxury watch. Five minutes pass, then ten—she’s still not back. Everyone else is chatting, not even noticing they’re both missing. I’ve got a bad feeling.
It’s annoying to act like I care about Yamanaka, but they’re taking too long. I head to the bathrooms to check. Right then, I see Kyōka and Yamanaka coming out of the restroom area. She’s grabbing his arm, pulling him—not toward the venue, but toward the exit.
“Where are you two going?”
“Haha, M-Mukai-kun. Uh, I had a bit too much to drink, so I was gonna step outside with Yamanaka-kun for some air.”
“Oh? Mind if I join?”
“No, I’m feeling better now, so I’ll head back.”
Kyōka quickly lets go of Yamanaka’s arm and hurries back to the venue. Yamanaka follows. I’m not satisfied, but I trail them back to our seats.
Maybe the hype around Yamanaka cooled off while they were gone, because the barrage of questions has died down. That’s fine. But something about how close Yamanaka and Kyōka are acting is bugging me.
Yamanaka keeps staring at Kyōka’s face—her lips, especially. Kyōka’s often looking at his crotch, smiling. They were gone for maybe ten minutes. I don’t think anything happened, but the vibe between them feels… different. It’s pissing me off.
As usual, my attempts to flirt with Kyōka get nowhere. It’s like pushing against a curtain—no traction.
Time drags on, and the reunion’s about to wrap up.
Then, out of nowhere, a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a suit storms into the venue.
“Pardon the intrusion. I’m here to pick up Yamanaka.”
“Yamanaka? Excuse me, who are you?”
“I’m his driver and financial manager. Think of me as his secretary.”
Yamanaka’s secretary!? No way! There’s no chance a guy like him has a beauty like that working for him!
“M-Mei!? Why are you here!?”
“I came to pick you up, Master. I thought the event would be ending soon. Or are you attending the afterparty? If so, I can drive you to the venue.”
Yamanaka looks around. Every guy in the room—except me—is staring at the blonde bombshell.
“Uh… nah, I think I’ll head home.”
“Understood.”
“Alright, I’m out. Catch you guys later.”
As Yamanaka and the woman start to leave—
“Hold up! Introduce us to the hottie first!”
Some classmate yells, but Yamanaka just waves lightly and walks out. Kyōka watches them leave, looking lonely.
This reunion’s been full of infuriating moments, but at least the nuisance is gone. I’ll focus on charming Kyōka at the afterparty and get her to a hotel. That’ll fix my mood.
I glance out the venue’s window and see the two of them driving off in a ridiculously fancy car.
“Ah!”
“What’s up?”
“I forgot to collect Yamanaka’s reunion fee!”
“Hah, acting like a big shot but too cheap to pay the fee? What a loser.”
One of the organizers and a classmate are talking. A few other less-popular guys nod in agreement. I agree, but with Kyōka nearby, I keep quiet.
“Well, it’s my fault for forgetting to collect. I have his contact info, so I’ll get it later. For now, I’ll cover it. Let’s head out.”
The class president collects money from everyone and goes to settle the bill.
“What!? It’s already paid!? For everyone!?”
“Hey, what’s going on, prez?”
“Apparently, the bill’s been taken care of—everybody’s share. That gorgeous secretary paid it all. The receipt’s with Yamanaka.”
“No way! So today’s free!?”
“…Looks like it. I’ll refund the fees.”
“Hell yeah! Yamanaka’s the man!”
The classmates go wild, chanting Yamanaka’s name—even the ones trashing him earlier.
Tch, acting high and mighty just for covering a cheap place like this? Lame. Let’s get to the afterparty already.
“Alright, everyone, to the afterparty—”
“Oh, sorry, I’ve got an early morning tomorrow.”
“Right, Kyōka’s got the morning news. Catch you later!”
Kyōka’s leaving too!? Then what was the point of me coming here!? I chase after her as she heads out.
“Wait up!”
“What’s up, Mukai-kun?”
“How about a drink, just the two of us? I won’t keep you long.”
“Sorry, I really have an early day.”
“Then, then how about dinner sometime—”
“Sorry. No can do.”
With that, Kyōka walks away.
Damn it!!
