Chapter 10: Yui’s Childhood Friend, Someya
Someya POV
I have a childhood friend, Yui Kondō, who lived nearby. We’ve known each other since kindergarten. She’s always been cute. I don’t think there was a single guy in our class who didn’t have a crush on her. Lively and always laughing cheerfully, she was the most beautiful girl in class. Honestly, I thought she could outshine idols.
As her childhood friend, I found it embarrassing to be close to her, so I always ended up teasing her. Flipping her skirt, hiding her things—stupid stuff like that. Of course, I regret it now. Looking back, it was such childish nonsense.
She was incredibly beautiful. But she changed. It started in high school, when her younger sister got sick.
After that, she stopped smiling much. She didn’t go to the hair salon anymore; her hair became messy. She started wearing the same clothes all the time. No accessories, no makeup even on weekends. She often had dark circles under her eyes, probably from lack of sleep. When I invited her to hang out, she’d turn me down, saying she had a part-time job. She became distant.
The Yui I loved was gone. I used to think I wouldn’t mind dating her. Or even just a physical relationship. As childhood friends, I figured it was only a matter of time before we got together. But I stopped feeling attracted to her. Gradually, I stopped talking to her altogether.

Later, Yui and I went to the same university. But we barely spoke. We just saw each other in passing sometimes.
Then, one day, I saw her, and she was stunningly beautiful again. It was like the old Yui was back—no, even more beautiful than before. She was more radiant than she’d been in high school, when she didn’t wear makeup.
Her hair was perfectly groomed. She wore subtle, natural makeup. Her hands, once rough from juggling multiple jobs, were now smooth and glossy. Even her nails were perfectly manicured. And her fashion—nothing flashy, but she wore elegant clothes. According to a fashion-savvy female friend, they were all brand-name items.
I couldn’t help but want her, no matter what it took.
My female friend said Yui must be doing “enjo kōsai” (compensated dating).
※
Compensated dating is a terrible thing. I had to stop Yui. I couldn’t stand the thought of my beautiful childhood friend being tainted by some random old man.
I talked to her for the first time in ages.
“Hey, long time no see.”
“…Someya-kun, it’s been a while.”
Yui seemed a bit wary of me. Maybe because it’d been so long?
“So, what do you want?”
“Can’t I talk to you without a reason?”
“No, it’s just sudden.”
“Yeah… sorry.”
It’d been so long since we talked that I didn’t know how to have a conversation anymore. How did I used to talk to her back then?
“Uh… you doing okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Good, that’s good. I heard a rumor that you might be doing compensated dating or something.”
“Haha, is that why you suddenly talked to me? That’s ridiculous, I’m not doing that.”
“Got it, of course.”
Yui waved her hand dismissively, laughing brightly. Her smile, seen up close for the first time in ages, shone like the sun. It hit me right in the chest. I knew it—I’m still in love with Yui. Since I went to the trouble of talking to her, I want to get close again, like old times. If I’m lucky, maybe I can get her drunk and take her to a hotel to make her mine.
“Hey, how about we grab dinner after classes today?”
“Sorry, I’m busy.”
“Busy with what? If today’s no good, tomorrow, the day after, or next week works too.”
“I can’t, I have a job.”
A job… That word gave me a bad feeling. In high school, she worked so many jobs she had dark circles and was always busy. Now she’s got money to spare and takes care of her appearance. I’m really curious about what kind of “job” she’s talking about.
“That job… it’s a normal job, right? What do you do?”
“Haha, of course it’s not a normal job. I mean, there’s even a rumor I’m doing compensated dating, right?”
“What…”
I was speechless for a moment. Not a normal job? Then what kind of job is it? A bad feeling grew stronger. No way, my Yui…?
“Hey! Quit that kind of job!”
“No way.”
“Why not!? You can earn money with a normal job!”
I got inexplicably angry and raised my voice. Yui responded calmly, coldly.
“Are you stupid? A normal job won’t cut it.”
“You don’t know that unless you try!”
“I do know. Unlike you, who just played around without working, how many jobs do you think I’ve had?”
“I… I’ll help you!”
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep! Just leave me alone!”
Yui, who’d been calm until then, suddenly shouted. Her outburst startled me.
While I was stunned, Yui turned on her heel and walked away briskly.
All I could do was watch her retreating figure as she left.
