Chapter 53: It Seems My Ex-Girlfriend Will Be at the Reunion
♢
The next day, when I woke up, it was already almost noon.
I couldn’t remember when I had fallen asleep last night.
However, checking my phone history, I saw that the call had ended around 4:30 AM, so Aoba might have hung up on her end.
Or maybe I did it unconsciously.
Either way, the more pressing issue was the current time.
Thinking that I would surely wake up in time since it was a daytime event, I hadn’t set an alarm. As a result, the current time was such that even if I started getting ready right away, I’d barely make it on time.
I hastily started preparing.
I pulled out some clothes I wore during high school from the closet, washed my face, quickly fixed my hair, and left the house.
“Heading out? Be careful.”
My mother said with a surprisingly cheerful face as she saw me off.
She was probably happy that her son seemed to be bouncing back a little.
Well, that was a big misunderstanding, but there was no point in denying it now.
The place I was heading to with a slight jog was a restaurant along the main road, a bit of a distance from the station. Apparently, a classmate working there had managed to book the place for us just for lunch hours.
I knew the location, so I proceeded without getting lost.
Checking the time along the way, it was really going to be tight.
I received some messages from my friends. I assumed they were just confirming if I was coming or not.
“Umeno-san is here, hey.”
The content was unexpected. Apparently, Asuka, who had marked herself as “absent,” was there.
…An uneasy feeling began to stir within me.
But having come this far, there was no way I could turn back now.
Besides, I had nothing to feel guilty about. If anyone did, it would be Asuka.
With that in mind, I continued toward the venue.
I arrived in front of the restaurant.
Voices could already be heard from inside, indicating that most people had already gathered.
And among them was Asuka.
Though I had no desire to see her face again, I wasn’t here to see her. I was here to meet my friends.
Resolving myself, I opened the door, where I was greeted by a group of four girls.
They were mostly athletes I used to hang out with in school. I had talked to them before, but we weren’t particularly close.
Maybe they were handling the reception.
“Sorry I’m late.”
But there was no response.
They just glared at me with narrow eyes. I was taken aback by the intensity of their stares.
“Wow, he really came, scumbag. Can you leave right now?”
The words that were delivered packed a powerful punch:
……Ha?
