I Was Unreasonably Dumped By My Girlfriend And Had My Heart Broken. When I Rescued A Beautiful Girl Who Was My Former Classmate And Idol In My Class From A Group Of Yarisa, My Gray College Life Started To Shine - Chapter 32
Episode 32: It’s Already Enough, It’s Been Replaced.
I squatted a little, stabilizing myself, and looked towards Aoba.
Most of her pants were soaked in the river, but her hand was just barely out of reach of the kitten.
“Just a little more…!”
With that, I also stepped into the river with my left foot, keeping my right foot firmly on the ground.
“Nogami-kun! Thanks, we might be able to manage this!”
Aoba submerged herself further, reaching out her hand. Finally, her hand scooped up the kitten’s belly.
As Aoba turned towards me with a smile,
“Don’t let your guard down!”
I called out while pulling Aoba towards me.
And at that very moment.
The necklace burst off from around Aoba’s neck.
It seemed the string got caught on some sturdy grass on the small island.
Time seemed to freeze for a moment.
The four-leaf clover charm sparkled as it fell into the river.
With a splash, it entered the water and drifted away.
Both Aoba and I simply watched it go.
“Aoba-san.”
After a while, I called out.
But she didn’t move at all. I tried pulling her arm with a bit more force, but she still didn’t budge.
“Come on, let’s get out of here.”
“Oh. Yeah, you’re right.”
Finally getting a response, both Aoba and I climbed up to the riverbank.
After Aoba placed the rescued kitten on the riverbank, I wrapped it in a towel.
I had brought it along to wipe off sweat.
Sitting in a triangle formation, Aoba and I shared a towel on our laps.
But Aoba was wetter than me. She might catch a cold like this.
I took off my shirt and draped it over her shoulders.
It should be fine since it’s not directly against her skin.
“…Sorry.”
“I thought you’d thank me. Besides, the cat was saved, so be happier.”
“But… my necklace.”
Aoba buried her face in her knees.
She fell completely silent. Amidst the sound of the river, I could hear her sniffles.
“It was something I got from you. We promised to replace memories with new ones, remember?”
Her voice trembled, filled with tears.
Aoba Hikari was just too kind-hearted for her own good.
This wasn’t something worth crying over.
If it had been something I had given her with all my heart, it might have been different.
But in the first place, this was something I intended to give to my ex-girlfriend. There was no need for Aoba to cherish it so deeply.
If anything, this was for the best.
“If we’re talking about replacing memories, it’s already enough. Whenever you think about that necklace, you’ll remember today first.”
“…Nogami-kun.”
“So don’t get too down about it.”
I placed my hand gently on Aoba’s shoulder.
“Thank you.”
As she said that, the kitten let out a meow, as if agreeing.
