“Oww…”
When I woke up, a sharp pain shot through my back, as if I had fallen from a great height, making me instinctively grimace. Looking around, I found myself surrounded by an unfamiliar forest. Ominous trees stood in irregular patterns, giving the eerie impression that they were mocking me which sent a shiver down my spine. In the distance, unfamiliar animal growls echoed, reinforcing the unsettling feeling that I was nowhere near Japan.
“Huh? Why am I in the middle of a forest?”
I was sure I had been lying in a hospital bed. I clearly remembered how, in the middle of the night, my chest suddenly felt tight and a deafening electronic alarm blared as a nurse rushed toward me in a panic. But after that, my memories were hazy, as if wrapped in fog, making it impossible to recall what had happened next.
Checking my clothing, I saw that I was wearing a simple blue one-piece outfit, the kind often seen in hospitals. Not only that—I didn’t even have shoes on. There was no way I could avoid insect bites like this, and this outfit was completely unsuitable for moving around in a forest.
“Ugh… This makes no sense.”
Even though I was finally outside after so long, the absurdity of my situation made any sense of relief vanish, replaced by an overwhelming wave of anxiety.
“Cough, cough… Ugh, my chest hurts… Urk…”
I tried to stand up despite the pain in my back, but a dizzying sensation, like motion sickness, made my legs wobble, and I fell back onto my rear.
“Hah… Hah… This is rough. But I need to find someone… Okay!”
Clinging to a tree for support, I managed to get back on my feet. With each step I took, small rocks and twigs dug into the soles of my feet, sending unpleasant jolts through my body. Still, stopping meant letting the fear take over, so I had no choice but to grit my teeth and keep moving forward.
===================
“Finally… I found something…”
After wandering for what felt like forever with aching legs I finally stumbled upon what looked like a path. It wasn’t a paved road, but two distinct lines of flattened grass stretched into the distance, likely from passing vehicles.
“If I follow this road, I should be able to find someone.”
Rustle… Rustle…
“Wh-Who’s there?”
Just as I started feeling relieved that I had a path forward, a noise came from the nearby bushes.
“U-Um! I’m not someone dangerous! I’m lost! Please help me!”
Rustle! …Rustle, rustle!
Desperate, I called out in the direction of the noise, but there was no response. Instead, whatever was in the bushes silently but surely kept creeping closer.
“Could it be… A bear?”
I had recently seen news reports about bears becoming more active. Given that I had no idea where I was, I needed to be prepared for the worst.
“A-AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!”
I suddenly remembered from that same news report that making loud noises before a bear encounter could be effective. Wasting no time, I put the strategy to the test.
Rustle… Rustle, rustle, rustle!
But no matter how much I shouted, the rustling sounds only grew louder, inching closer and closer.
It’s coming!
As fear squeezed my chest, I braced myself with all my might…
Punyann!
“…Huh?”
What emerged from the bushes was not a bear, but a strange, gelatinous creature—almost as if water had taken solid form.
Punyann! Punyann! Punyann! **
It bounced around me in circles, as if trying to announce its presence. Somehow, its movements were oddly charming. It looked almost… Cute.
“What is this creature…? Could this be a slime? Cough, cough. The famous one that always appears in games?”
The tension that had been keeping me on edge suddenly drained from my body, and a sharp pain shot through my chest.
“But why is a creature straight out of a fantasy world standing right in front of me?”
As I struggled to make sense of the sheer absurdity of what I was seeing, a certain hypothesis came to mind.
“Could this be… An isekai reincarnation?”
During my long hospital stay, I had read books with similar stories. If I remembered correctly, the protagonist in those stories would wake up in an unfamiliar world after being hit by a truck, then use overpowered abilities or items granted by a god to defeat powerful enemies one after another.
If I really had been transported to another world or in my case, transferred rather than reincarnated… Either way, there was one thing I needed to confirm.
“Ahem… Fire! Thunder! Freeze! Dark!”
I raised a hand toward the slime in front of me and chanted every spell I could think of.
Punyann?
But instead of magic activating, nothing happened at all. The slime remained motionless, as if nothing had happened.
“Maybe this is a world where magic doesn’t work? But that wouldn’t make sense… If slimes exist, then magic should exist. Those two things are supposed to come as a set.”
Nyurun!
“Wah!”
Just as I was grumbling about the world’s logic, the slime suddenly lunged at my right arm, as if it had realized I was completely powerless. The cool, squishy sensation startled me, and I let out an embarrassingly weak cry.
“What do you think you’re… Gah! H-Hot! It burns!”
Sizzle! Fsssshh…
“Hah… hah… No way… Is it trying to eat me?”
The stark white skin of my arm was turning red, gradually being exposed as the slime, once a translucent blue, started to shift to a deep purple. A cold shiver ran down my spine as pain coursed through me.
“Damn it… Let go! …Shit! Why can’t I grab it?!”
I desperately reached out with my left hand, trying to pry the slime off, but its body was as soft as jelly, slipping through my fingers no matter how hard I tried to grip it.
“Someone! Help me! It hurts! I don’t want to die!”
No matter how much I struggled, the slime didn’t seem to care. It kept consuming more and more of my body until it was about to engulf my entire face.
“A… Ahh…”
Overwhelmed by fear and pain, I completely panicked.
I screamed for help and tried to run, but with my body being consumed by the slime, I couldn’t even move.
“Somebody… Please…”
Slash!
Just as I begged for help, a deafening, heavy sound rang through the air, and the slime before me was cleaved clean in two. The creature that had been suffocating me instantly lost its form, dissolving into a puddle of liquid. The pain that had been overwhelming me vanished, replaced by a strange sensation—almost as if strength was surging through me.
I had no idea what was happening. I cracked my eyes open slightly, and before me stood a mysterious, stunning girl with animal-like ears on her head. She gently held me in her arms.
“#%#&%’#!!!!”
She spoke, but I couldn’t understand a word—was it some foreign language? Had I… been saved? A flood of thoughts raced through my mind. I had many things I needed to say, but before I could utter a single word, my consciousness faded, and I lost myself to the darkness.
