ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
“Damn it! Why the hell is the Demon Lord’s Army here!?”
“Who knows… Why don’t you ask yourself that question? 【Frozen Bite】!”
With the incantation, a dragon formed of ice appeared, baring its fangs at the reptilian demon brandishing a sword.
“Kuh…”
From the spot where it bit him, white frost began to spread. The frost froze her skin and armor solid, turning her into an ice statue.
I never really liked this spell. The temperature around here always drops in an instant when I use it.
“Haa… Haa… Lammy-san, are you… All right?”
While I brushed the mud off my jacket after defeating the enemy, Fiilia-sama, who had just turned the whole area into a sea of fire, called out to me. Judging from how she was panting and barely standing, she probably had very little magic power left. She looked like she could collapse at any moment.
“As for me, I’m fine. I just haven’t run this much in ages, so I’m totally wiped out…”
Ah. I was mistaken. It wasn’t a lack of mana. It was just plain lack of exercise. Still, the fact that she could cast such a powerful spell and still have magic left was impressive. Recruiting her had definitely been the right call.
“Lammy-san, you don’t even break a sweat, do you? That’s amazing…”
“My species doesn’t sweat to begin with, and I’m used to this kind of combat. This level of fighting is nothing. If anything, those creatures over there are more troublesome than the demons.”
I shrugged my shoulders and scanned the surroundings.
“GROOOOAR!!!“
“Crap! Lightning’s coming! Everyone focus on evasion!“
Nearby, both armies were being attacked by horned beasts. Roars and crashes echoed across the battlefield. The situation had devolved into a full-blown three-way melee: our Ken-chan Retrieval Unit, the demons guarding the building, and the magical beasts that had appeared behind them.
We were being attacked from both the front and rear—but as expected of the elite troops under the Demon Lord’s Army, they held their ground. Even without casualties, they managed to suppress the enemy through sheer beastman strength and coordination.
“Don’t let them through! Anyone who survives gets a full pack of the limited-edition Ken-chan Battle Cards we cornered the market on!”
The only problem was that, even though the battle was leaning in our favor, we couldn’t advance. The enemy’s numbers were just too overwhelming. Their morale was ridiculously high, and they fought like madmen. Time was slipping away with no progress.
“At least if we could just do something about those beasts…! 【Icicle Lancer】!”
Zash!
“I already burned the surrounding area earlier to ward off beasts, but they’re still charging straight through… I’m sorry.”
Fiilia-sama apologized, dragging her staff across the ground while sketching a glowing magic circle.
“When I traveled in the past, this spell used to scare them off… Maybe I should just use my ultimate technique and burn the entire forest down…”
“No fire magic. It’ll release poisonous smoke.”
“Ah, right. I’m sorry…”
“If the beasts aren’t afraid of fire, it means they’re in heat. Which also means… Ken-chan is nearby. So don’t feel too down.”
“I hope you’re right…”
Yes. There was a reason we were fighting here in the first place. It all started six days ago. During one of the most important parts of new recruit training—“If anyone tries to assault Ken-chan, kill them immediately”—a letter arrived.
『Ken-chan has been kidnapped. He’s probably in an area where the magical beasts are becoming active. Need info.』
That was all it said. When I first saw it, I doubted it. Would Luna-sama really write a letter this neatly? But then—
“Ohoo~~! There’s a faint scent of Ken-chan coming from the paper~~♡♡♡”
“You’re right! This sweat seeping into it… It’s from his jacket! His jacket scent is all over this!”
When the beastman servants all crowded around the letter and went into heat, we knew it was genuine. We immediately began gathering intel as instructed and regrouped with Luna-sama, leading a small army with us.
“Hmm, good work… I see. So magical beasts are rampaging not far from here. Then that must be where Ken-chan is!”
“That’s fine, but… Why are we focusing on the beasts instead of directly looking for Ken-chan?”
“Oh, that’s because…”
According to Luna-sama, Ken-chan’s very existence was indecent. His scent alone could send any creature into heat. So if someone tried to transport him, any magical beast along the route would go into a mating frenzy and become violently active. If he was being hidden somewhere, the area around him would be completely overrun by uncontrollable beasts.
At first, I was skeptical—Really?—but then we were attacked mid-flight by wyverns drawn to Ken-chan’s scent. Come to think of it, even when we transported him to the Elven Forest, we’d been attacked by beasts back then too.
Honestly, I was surprised. Normally, Luna-sama would just go, “I’m Ken-chan’s wife! I know everything about him, so shut up and follow me!” and charge in without a shred of evidence—but this time, she actually had reasoning behind it.
Her eyes burned with determination when we set out from the castle. Maybe meeting Kushina-sama had changed something in her. Or perhaps she’d had a good encounter of another kind. In any case, that was how we started moving from one beast-rampant zone to another.
The first place we visited turned out to be a random farming village hosting an unauthorized outdoor Ken-chan Festival—a bust. The second was another village where they’d enshrined Ken-chan’s used socks and clothes as sacred relics. (It had already been wiped out in a beast attack, though.)
For a week we searched without rest, and just as unease was starting to spread, we finally got a hit.
Clang!
“You think you can hog Ken-chan all to yourself!? You’re a hundred years too early! We, his servants, get to bear his children first!”
“Haah!? What good is keeping a male all to yourselves!? My entire species only has twenty people left! We’re doing everyone a favor by training Ken-chan into a communal breeding stallion, so you should be thanking us!”
“Grrr!”
“See!? Even the beasts agree with me!”
“No they don’t!”
And so here we were, battling desperately to break through the building’s defenses.
“Lammy-sama! A new wave of beasts is incoming! Around fifty of them!”
While I was thinking of our next move, a wyvern-mounted scout descended, panting, to report.
“I see…So the beasts really are the main problem here. Fiilia-sama, can’t you handle them telepathically?”
“Impossible… I tried reasoning with them, told them to calm down, but they just laughed through their noses.”
“I see…”
Incidentally, Luna-sama had already charged into the building, shouting.
“Ken-chan’s presence! He’s here! He must be in trouble right now!”
All the while carrying one of Kushina-sama’s maids on her back. Given the urgency, I couldn’t blame her for it. But as a result, our units were split up and caught in separate skirmishes before we could regroup.
“I’m a little worried…”
I knew Luna-sama was strong, but I was worried she’d attack the moment she found Ken-chan—or worse, fall into a trap.
“Don’t worry, Lammy-san. Luna-sama is stupid, but she has her reliable moments.”
Fiilia-sama, who normally said she was afraid of Luna, was actually defending her for once. She was probably trying to reassure me.
“Fufu, true enough. Let’s finish our part of the job and have Ken-chan praise us afterward, shall we?”
“Yes!”
We readied our spells toward the direction the beasts were approaching from. Whatever else might be said, Luna-sama’s instincts were razor-sharp when it came to Ken-chan. She wouldn’t fall for cheap provocation.
“We’re counting on you… Luna-sama.”
For now, all we could do was believe in her—and wait.
============
Crash!
Crunch!
Thud!!!
“#%$#%$#!!!!”
“Luna-sama! Please calm down! That’s not a ball! That’s a person! Worse, that’s someone’s head!”
“K-Ke-Ken-chan!! How dare you…! How dare you hurt Ken-chan!! I’ll slaughter every last one of you!!!”
Luna-sama had gone completely berserk.
