Chapter 10: The Outside World Is Full of Dangers!

Chatter, chatter, chatter…

When I woke up, I found myself inside a cage. A large cloth was spread all around the cage, blocking my view of the outside, but the shaking motion told me that I was being transported somewhere.

“Ugh, my back hurts…”

『We just need to get through this downtown area… The Demon Lord’s Castle is close. Hang in there a little longer.』

From beyond the cloth, I could hear the voices of the two women I had likely heard yesterday. I wanted to understand my current situation, so I strained my ears, but as expected, I couldn’t make sense of what they were saying. Giving up, I lay back down.

Eventually, I knew I would have to learn the language of this world so I could properly communicate with them, but without even a textbook to start with, I had no clue how to go about it. With things so uncertain, I couldn’t help but wonder—how did the very first foreigners who came to Japan manage to communicate? There must have been constant misunderstandings on the way to language understanding.

“I get that this is for transportation, but why is this cage so sturdy? Is it to prevent me from escaping…?”

No way… Don’t tell me… They’re not planning to sell me as a slave, right?

Then again, this is a fantasy world. It wouldn’t be surprising if human trafficking exists. If that’s the case, I might be in serious trouble. I probably—no, I definitely—have infinite magic power. And because of that, I’m becoming the target of a massive power struggle that could shake entire nations…

Just as I was indulging in this lingering fantasy—

“Something smells really good…”

The savory scent of grilled meat drifted through the air, pulling my thoughts in an entirely different direction. Now that I thought about it, everything I ate yesterday had been… Violently rejected by my body. I had sworn off meat for a while, but after getting hit with such an enticing aroma, I couldn’t help but want some again.

“I’m hungry, but the meat in this world is kind of strange…”

The meat I ate yesterday had been unbelievably tender, bursting with rich flavor the more I chewed. To be fair, there was nothing to complain about in terms of quality.

“But… The seasoning was nonexistent…”

I remembered reading that pepper was once worth its weight in gold. Maybe spices were just as valuable in this world.

“Ahh, man! If only I understood the language, I’d totally make mayonnaise the next big thing in this world!”

Not that I actually knew how to make mayonnaise. Something about mixing oil and eggs, right? But if it were that simple, someone here would have already figured it out.

『Oh? I thought I heard some weak little noises. It turns out you’re already awake.  Are you alright? You’re not feeling unwell, are you?』

“If possible… Could I have something to eat?”

I didn’t care if it wasn’t delicious. I just needed something in my stomach.

『Fufufu, you’re as cute as ever.』

I had bowed my head and asked sincerely, but the response I got was rather underwhelming.

Ugh, how am I supposed to convey that I’m starving when I can’t speak the language…

Guuuuuuuu…

At that moment, my stomach let out a loud, undeniable growl, reaching its limit.

『It seems he’s hungry. Now that I think about it, we haven’t given him anything to eat all morning. Why don’t we take a late lunch break here?』

『Hmm, I see a food stall nearby… I suppose I can grab something for him to eat. To be honest, I’ve been eyeing those skewers for a while now』

After hearing my stomach growl, the two of them exchanged glances before heading off somewhere. Were they going to get me food? If so, I’d be grateful… but I wasn’t thrilled that my first successful communication in another world was through “stomach noises.”

“Whoa! What the—?”

『Hey, hey! Why are you in a cage? Did you do something bad?』

Turning toward the sudden noise, I saw a small, fair-skinned girl peeking through a gap in the cloth. At first, I thought she was human since she lacked the distinctive beast ears that many others had. But upon closer inspection, I noticed she had a different kind of fang than the black-haired woman from before.

“Her upper canines are unusually sharp… How odd.”

『You sound so funny when you talk… You’re so interesting! Oh, right! Do you want this?』

The girl smiled brightly as she held two meat skewers in her hands. She stretched one out toward me, trying her best to pass it through the bars of the cage. Her kind gesture made my chest feel warm, and at the same time, my hunger reached its peak.

Munch, munch…

“This is… delicious. I have no idea what kind of meat this is, but the bold seasoning is incredible. It’s tougher and drier than the meat I had yesterday, but I can feel my body craving this.”

Munch, munch…

“Ah… Thank you… This is criminally good.”

Oh no…

The sheer deliciousness of the meat brought tears to my eyes.

Ever since I was hospitalized with that mysterious illness, I’d been stuck eating bland hospital food. How many years had it been since I last tasted something this salty? Just being able to eat this made coming to another world worth it. There was no doubt about it. I must have come to this world just to eat this.

The mysterious girl beckoned to me, but unfortunately, I was trapped inside this cage and couldn’t move.

Having just finished my last bite of meat, I found myself mesmerized by the girl as she waved a freshly grilled skewer back and forth like a cat toy. And as if drawn by the movement, I unconsciously pressed my body against the bars of the cage, stretching my hand out toward the skewer.

『That’s it, that’s a good boy…♡ I’m sure Mother will welcome you with open arms. Now then, as proof of your new life as my familiar… I’ll be taking your blood~♡』

『Hey! What do you think you’re doing…?! You shouldn’t be near this cage! This cloth is hiding something R-18 inside, so kids must stay away! Just looking—no, even smelling it will awaken your instincts as a female! Now, go on, shoo!』

『No! I found him first…! I even fed him! I’ve already decided! He’s going to be my pet until he dies!』

『Enough with your nonsense… Wait a moment, those fangs of yours…! You’re a Vampire, aren’t you?! Lammy, get this girl away from here immediately! Vampires are a dangerous race that turn weak creatures into familiars by sucking their blood!』

『Understood… Alright, come along now.』

『Wait! Let go of my tail! I am a noble! I will never, I will absolutely never give uppppppp…!』

For some reason, the kind girl who had given me that delicious meat was suddenly taken away without warning. I wasn’t sure what was going on, but… I hoped I’d get a chance to thank her when we met again.

『Honestly… You can never let your guard down near the Demon Lord’s Castle… Too many different races around here.』

Oh? Looks like she dropped one of her meat skewers. Lucky me.

『Wha—?! Don’t eat that meat! The spices of the Demon Realm might be harmful to the Human race! Eat this plain one instead!』

“MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH MUNCH!!”

Without hesitation, I swatted away the obviously flavorless skewer and continued devouring the heavily seasoned one.

『Hey! Spit that out this instant! Hey! Don’t turn away and retreat to the back of the cage! Ugh… Seriously… If you don’t listen, this Luna is going to get really mad at you!』

In the end, Luna, captivated by Kento’s adorable stubbornness, found herself unable to truly get angry at him. All she could do was watch him  in silence as he ate the skewers in satisfaction.
