ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
The orbital elevator descending from the space station to Tiria’s surface was a colossal structure. Each of its eight shafts was as massive as a small building, capable of transporting huge numbers of people and large quantities of cargo in a single round trip. Even so, it still couldn’t keep up with the planet’s logistics needs, and apparently operated continuously, day and night.
The shaft we boarded as well was carrying several hundred women of the modern human species besides us, along with containers packed full of daily necessities that couldn’t be produced on Tiria.
“Wow… it’s faster than I expected.”
“It’s basically no different from free fall. Even so, it still takes about an hour, so please relax.”
Through the elevator’s windows, Tiria’s sky rapidly drew closer. There weren’t many clouds, but the thin layer of atmosphere looked like frosted glass. The shaft, traveling along a carbon-nanotube cable, descended smoothly as it skillfully controlled centrifugal and inertial forces.Judging by the reactions around us, orbital elevators didn’t seem particularly rare. Staring around too conspicuously might actually attract more attention. Inside the elevator shaft, there were facilities resembling simple lounges to pass the travel time. Teres brought back something like tea from a row of vending machines along the wall.
“This is a local Tiria drink. The planet is also famous for its natural water and carbonated springs.”
“Huh. Some things really don’t change, no matter the era.”
Between the name—‘Tiria Tea!’—and everything else, I was convinced that humanity hadn’t changed much even after a thousand years. When I tried it, it tasted just like ordinary black tea.
“It’s a planet rich in underground resources. Mining is its main claim to fame.”
“I guess you can never have enough iron.”
This was an age where people leapt beyond their home stars and massive spacecraft on the scale of the Migdal traveled in countless numbers. The mineral reserves of inhabited worlds alone were nowhere near sufficient, so there were innumerable resource-development planets like Tiria, with more frontier ships still being sent out into deep space.
“Unfortunately, even in terms of technology, humanity is still trailing behind Demonia. Unless we catch up and surpass them, humanity will never truly be safe.”
In the vastness of space and the confines of ship interiors, it was easy to forget, but humanity was still at war with Demonia. In the star systems that served as main battlefields, enormous numbers of people and weapons were still being ground away. Humanity had first encountered Demonia only a few centuries ago, but Demonia had already left their homeworld long before that and wandered the cosmos. By exterminating male members of humanoid species wherever they went, they absorbed many alien civilizations and acquired extraordinarily advanced technology.
They were often imagined as something like Amazons, but in terms of intelligence as well, humanity lagged behind. To narrow that massive gap even a little, the Galactic Unified Government was squeezing resources out of planets at a voracious pace and pouring them into technological development.
“Hey, Alisa… Don’t you think the ones who attacked us right after we surfaced might’ve been Demonia too?”
It was a sensitive question, but I felt enough time had passed to ask. Right after we emerged from spatial submergence, there had been an attack. Alisa had been targeted by a sniper using a decoy, and the culprit still hadn’t been identified. If someone could deceive the Migdal, which surely carried state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, then it might well have been Demonia. I was sure that possibility had already been considered by them.
Even so, Alisa tilted her head uncertainly.
“It’s certainly possible they’d attack the Migdal. But Demonia is supposed to specialize in group combat. A lone ambush using just a decoy and a sniper doesn’t seem like their style.”
“Is that so?”
If they wanted to eliminate me, the only man left in humanity, the bearer of pure human genes, I would’ve thought they’d abandon such pride and do anything necessary. But to Alisa and the others, it apparently felt off.
“Normally, Demonia will deliberately hijack our open channels and boldly announce themselves. They even send over their face photos while they’re at it.”
“…Seriously?”
They sounded even more belligerent than some old-school warriors, the type to charge straight on. When I asked why they’d send face photos, I was told it was to boast to the men they were about to violate. That sort of culture was probably unique to an all-female warrior species. Demonia were said to be large, well-built beings with horns on their foreheads, and their sheer intimidation must be overwhelming.
Alisa operated her terminal and showed me several images of Demonia faces. They were silver-haired, dark-skinned, powerfully built beauties, each with two horns about five centimeters long protruding from their forehead. Sharp canine teeth peeked from their lips, and their upturned eyes carried the fierce glare of a raptor.
“And this one?”
“That’s a famous Demonia general. A vicious one who suddenly appears across various sectors to launch surprise attacks.”
It seemed humanity had suffered greatly at her hands. Alisa’s expression grew complicated.
Though called a general, her actual role was closer to that of a pirate. A species that had long since lost the very concept of a homeworld lived with ships as the foundation of their lives. Because of that, they didn’t settle in one place, were only loosely connected as a species, and attacked men however they pleased.
The woman in the photo Alisa showed, General Dekedeke, was said to command especially large fleets.
“Dekedeke?”
“That’s what happens when you run a Demonia name through the translator. Their vocal organs aren’t that different from ours anyway, so if you use a learning machine, you can pick up the Demonia language pretty quickly.”
Even so, the name still felt distinctly foreign… No, distinctly alien. And in truth, her chest, hips, and height were all very dekedeke(big) as well. Given that the two sides had been fighting for centuries, it seemed they’d come to understand each other’s languages to some extent. The Demonia custom of announcing themselves probably played a role. There’d be no point in giving your name if no one could understand it.
“Commander, we’ll be arriving shortly.”
“You’re right. Touya-san, please get ready.”
While we were talking, the shaft drew closer to the surface. Even upon entering the atmosphere, there was no sense of shaking at all. Only when Teres spoke did I realize it, and I lifted myself from my seat. Through the large window stretched a red-brown wasteland. Swarms of gigantic heavy machines were tearing up the surface. Following the long cable with my eyes, I saw a silver city spread out at its end.
The city rapidly approached, its buildings becoming clearer. Around the elevator portal connected to the spaceport lay vast logistics warehouses, with thick arterial roads extending outward in a radial pattern. It was a neatly ordered cityscape, clearly planned and built on previously undeveloped land.
“There are far more people in the city itself. Touya-san, please make sure you stay close to us.”
“Got it. I’m counting on you for protection.”
The shaft made a gentle landing, and the doors opened. What spread out before us was the gleaming sight of a futuristic city.
