Chapter 84: [Extra Story] Spartan Military Training (Chitose’s Perspective)
~Chitose’s Perspective~
Three days after we had returned from the deserted island, there was no time to relax before Kitakami-san’s military training began. It was tough, really tough training.
“Alright, first, one hundred push-ups. Then one hundred sit-ups, back exercises, and squats.”
“Th-that much? I’ll die…”
“We might go to the deserted island again. If you don’t get stronger by then, you could be killed.”
Hayasaka-kun had mentioned it.
He had said we might go treasure hunting.
To do that, we’d need to be as trained as a military unit, with knowledge of weapons and equipment. If possible, we’d even need to learn to pilot a helicopter or boat.
Why did we have to go that far?
But for Hayasaka-kun’s sake…I kept trying. Every day, following Kitakami-san’s instructions, I did a hundred push-ups, sit-ups, back exercises, and squats. And I ran a lot too.
As I kept doing that, I started to get stronger.
“You’re doing great, Chitose-san.”
“Do you think so?”
“Yes. Not many can keep up with my training. Akira-kun and Amane-san get exhausted and need to rest quickly.”
“I’m not much help, so I at least want to be as strong as you, Kitakami-san.”
“I see. Well then, shall we move on to the next step?”
“The next step?”
When I tilted my head in confusion, Kitakami-san turned and began walking away. Where was she taking me?
—
We left the apartment and headed underground.
Being led somewhere like that…was a bit scary.
“Chitose-san, here we are. Right here.”
“What is this place?”
“I asked Amane-san to build a shooting range even further underground. It has perfect soundproofing.”
“Eh? Wh-what?!”
Kitakami-san crouched down and unlocked something. She typed in a code to enter—like something from a spy movie!
When had they made something like this?
The door opened, revealing a staircase that led further down.
Kitakami-san moved ahead, and I had no choice but to follow her.
At the bottom, there was a shooting range, like something out of a movie or cop drama. It looked so real. Even the targets were just like the real thing.
“Let’s start with a handgun to get familiar.”
“A handgun…you mean a pistol?”
“In Japan, it’s sometimes called a ‘chaka.’ I usually say ‘handgun’ because of my gaming habits.”
Now that I thought about it, Kitakami-san had mentioned she liked survival games. She collected airsoft guns and even played with them, engaging in shooting games.
“Wow, it’s heavy…”
“It’s an airsoft gun made to resemble a real gun. Its power is set as high as regulations allow, so it’s quite strong.”
“Wow, it’s really this heavy.”
“With real guns, we’re limited to what’s allowed by gun licenses, so for handguns, we have to use airsoft replicas.”
“Got it. When we go back to the deserted island, will we get real ones?”
“Yes, I’ll have a military friend bring them. Right now, keeping real guns has too many risks. So, for now, we can only practice with shotguns or rifles that are allowed with a license.”
It all sounded complicated. Even just holding that airsoft gun was intimidating; I couldn’t imagine using a real one.
The gun had a solid weight.
Could I use it to protect myself or others?
“What should I do?”
“First, get into position. Hold the gun firmly with both hands…no, not like that…here, with your right hand like this…”
Kitakami-san taught me in detail how to handle the gun.
I gradually improved and started hitting the target.
Bang, bang!
Most of my shots hit the center of the human-shaped target.
“How’s that, Kitakami-san?”
“This is surprising. You seem to have a talent for shooting, Chitose-san.”
“Really? I’m not terrible?”
“Not at all; with this, you wouldn’t be out of place in the Self-Defense Forces.”
“Really? Maybe I do have a knack for this.”
“Yes, I think so. It seems the handgun is no problem for you. Shall we move on to real guns?”
“Yes, I’d like to try.”
“Since they’re loud, please wear these electronic noise-canceling earmuffs.”
She handed me a pair of large headphones. So, this was to protect my ears from the shooting noise. I’d seen things like that on TV dramas.
Then, Kitakami-san pulled out a shotgun.
Thud
“It’s so…heavy…”
I was shocked at how heavy it was.
Could I really shoot that?
“Come on, Chitose-san, try to hold it up.”
“…I’ll try.”
I continued with the training.
After over a week of shooting practice, I had leveled up even more!
To be continued

Chapter 85: A Miracle Happened!? The Path to Escape!
Together with Amane and Kaede, I explored the cave.
There might have been an undiscovered passage somewhere, so we searched every corner.
Ideally, we’d find a safe spot to blast open, but it was unlikely we’d get that lucky. Looking back, that trap room would’ve been the best option.
But that room was buried now; we couldn’t go back.
“Ah, it’s a dead end…” Amane said, and she was right. It was a dead end. I thought we were under the pillbox, where we first descended. We had blasted through it with dynamite back then, so it was blocked now. There was no way out.
“This is tough. There’s nowhere in here safe enough to blow up with the C4,” Kaede observed.
I had her assess the cave, but it seemed hopeless. We might have been stuck there forever—something I’d really rather have avoided.
“Hm, what should we do?”
“Hayasaka-kun, why don’t we try blasting this area? Since it’s part of the pillbox, maybe we can break through,” Kaede suggested.
It was unlikely, though.
“It’s just like you think, Kaede. The area’s already collapsed, so blasting it will only bury us further.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right…”
We only had one piece of C4 and a single grenade left. We couldn’t waste them.
It was probably hopeless. I was almost ready to give up—when suddenly—
There was a loud rumbling from the pillbox. It sounded like an explosion. The vibrations were so strong they reached us there. What kind of explosives were they using?
“Hayasaka-kun, is this…”
“Most likely, it’s the military guys. They’re trying to blow a hole without any concern for the cave’s safety.”
“N-no way…Doing that could collapse the cave completely.”
“I didn’t expect this.”
Those guys were probably using C4 or something like it. In the end, we had been racing against time.
We turned back, leaving the area under the pillbox.
We were moving as fast as we could, but we were exhausted.
When we reached a middle point, I sat down for a break—but then I felt the ground give way beneath me, and I fell.
“—Wait, no way!!”
The ground itself just gave way! Or rather, it wasn’t solid ground—it was a clump of mud.
“W-wait, Hayasaka-kun, you’ve got to be kidding!”
“How can there be a trap here?!”
—
“Oww…”
I must have been knocked out for a while. When I opened my eyes, I was lying with my head on Amane’s lap. …Wait, was this heaven?
“Are you alright, Hayasaka-kun?”
“Oh, Amane…What happened to me?”
“Look up, over there.”
“Over there?”
Looking up, I saw a steep slope. So I must have fallen down from there. There was another level below the underground cave. It was really like a labyrinth down there.
“There was another passage after all.”
“You really are lucky, Hayasaka-kun.”
“It’s nothing special.”
I got up and checked the surroundings.
The path looked familiar.
“…Could this be…”
Yes. I remembered now. This was the tunnel that Tanaka and Akira had explored. I had told Amane about this path before.
So this was where it led!
Which meant—
“Hey, Hayasaka-kun, can we use this to get out?”
“Yeah, Amane. This is a miracle.”
“Huh? What do you mean?”
Come to think of it, Kaede hadn’t been there at the time. So I explained about how I had encountered Tanaka and Akira and met Kusamochi there.
“So that’s the story.”
“Tanaka and Akira were here? And Kusano too?”
“You know Tanaka and Akira, Kaede?”
“Oh, yeah, those two were delinquent buddies. Total scum.”
It looked like Kaede had been in their class. That’s how she knew them.
But more importantly, if this really was that passageway, it should lead to the forest. The rope should still have been there. If all went well, we might be able to escape.
“Alright, let’s go check on the rope.”
“Right, it’s our last hope.”
“I’ll protect you, Amane.”
“That’s reassuring. Alright, I’m counting on you.”
Her smile made my heart race. Being with Amane always lifted my spirits.
“Hey, I’m here too, you know!” Kaede complained.
“Sorry, Kaede, I’ll need you to guard my back.”
“You got it!”
With that odd response, we set off.
The path there was wide, with a high ceiling. It was easy to walk along, even with three or four people side by side.
Why was that part of the cave so wide?
And I never expected it to connect to the treasure room. Back then, had Tanaka and Akira missed finding it?
Gun in hand, we walked forward for about thirty minutes.
Finally, we came across a familiar passage.
“We’ve come pretty far, but I’m certain now.”
“Yes, Hayasaka-kun, this is the spot you mentioned with the rope.”
The forest exit should have been just ahead.
And soon, we arrived.
“Wow! It’s still intact!”
My excitement skyrocketed. The rope was right where we had left it.
“Whoa, Hayasaka-kun, you’re amazing!”
“It was just pure luck. I didn’t expect it would lead to the forest…”
But there was something strange.
How could Tanaka and Akira have gotten close to the treasure but never found it? Maybe they had gotten lost without a map.
Thinking of it that way, it made sense.
“We should let Kizuna know. Now we can carry out the treasure.”
“Yeah, we’re all going to be rich! Let’s hurry back, Kaede!”
We had outsmarted Whitewater. If we could secretly haul out the treasure, we’d be millionaires! Paradise awaited!!
I turned back toward the treasure room—when I saw someone coming down the rope.
“Hahaha! Long time no see, Hayasaka!”
“We’ve been waiting, you jerks!”
Th-those two! When had they gotten here? That nasty look…It was Tanaka and Akira! Had they been waiting for us in the forest all this time?
So they had never gone back to the mainland.
“Why are you here?!”
“Why? Isn’t it obvious?! We’re here for the treasure and the girls! We’re going to accomplish what Kurashima and Tachikawa couldn’t! Don’t think you’re the only one who gets it all, Hayasaka!”
Tanaka, furious, raised his gun at us.
It was a Desert Eagle…!
So after we had disarmed them a month ago, they must have picked up weapons!
