Chapter 78: Treasure Worth Over 30 Billion Yen!
Where on earth had they been tracking us from…? I hadn’t noticed a thing.
From the start, I thought we’d sealed the entrance by blowing it up. Is there another route?
Or maybe…
“Amane, check Kitakami-san’s clothes.”
“Huh? His clothes?”
“Just hurry.”
“Okay, got it.”
Following my instructions, Amane searched Kitakami’s clothes and found a small chip. So that’s it. They’d hidden a GPS in Kitakami’s clothes.
That’s how our location was completely exposed.
“So, you finally figured it out.”
“Marcus, you’re after the treasure, aren’t you?”
“Of course. With this much treasure, it could easily be worth over 30 billion, like that American treasure hunter, Mel Fisher’s haul.”
Thirty billion…?! Could this treasure really be that valuable…? It’s unbelievable.
Even a single billion would be incredible, and here we’re talking thirty billion. It’s more than a single person could ever spend.
Marcus planned to keep it all for himself.
“So you were deceiving us from the beginning?”
“That’s right. I heard from Kizuna that you were the only one who knew about this place.”
“I see, so that’s why you betrayed us.”
“Exactly…I calculated everything precisely so the plane could land accurately. Under normal circumstances, you’d be dead by now. You should be grateful.”
“Sure, thanks for that. So, what’s your plan for us? Planning to kill us?”
Marcus aimed an Uzi at us and ordered us to put our hands behind our heads in a forceful tone.
We had no choice but to comply.
“Good. Any pointless resistance will only shorten your lifespan. …Fine, I’ll give you a chance. Cooperate and help carry out the treasure. I’ll let you live. But first, disarm.”
“Understood.”
Of course, I had no intention of actually following his orders.
Amane had secretly hidden a nail gun. She managed to grab it when she put her hands behind her head. This is it. It’s our only shot.
This was just like the final scene of Die Hard.
“Alright, we’ve set up another exit. We’ll transport the treasure through there.”
So, it’s already excavated.
That must mean the “left route.”
In that case, there’s only one thing to do.
I grinned, feeling like Bruce Willis in Die Hard.
“Hahaha…Hahahaha…HAHAHAHA…!”
“What’s so funny, Hayasaka? Are you ready to die?”
–Guess it won’t play out like a movie. This is real life, after all. Time for a new plan.
“My bad, just remembered something funny.”
“Fine. I’m giving you a bag—start loading the treasure into it.”
The moment Marcus reached for his bag, I didn’t miss the opportunity.
Now!!
I grabbed the nail gun Amane held and charged at Marcus.
“Uooooooooh!”
“What…!? Are you insane?!”
An Uzi is light and rapid-fire.
But I haven’t wasted this past month. I learned survival skills from Kitakami and toughened up.
Yes, I trained and built up my body.
With brutal Green Beret-style drills!
While he sprayed bullets from the Uzi, I kicked up water toward Marcus.
“Hayasaka-kun, that’s not enough!”
Kusamochi threw a flash grenade. Saved!
A blinding flash erupted.
As Marcus was stunned, I fired the nail gun.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The nails shot out, piercing Marcus’s arms and body.
“Gaaaaaahhh!”
Kaede, moving in from the side, kept firing the nail gun. Nice shot!
“Take this!”
“Stop! Aargh!”
The nails tore into his flesh, leaving Marcus’s body covered in them.
In that opening, I seized his Uzi. But he probably had more weapons. There must be a handgun or a knife too.
I stripped away all his weapons.
A USP handgun, a combat knife, two grenades. And even some C4.
“Nice work, Hayasaka-kun.”
“Kaede, you’re the survival game expert here.”
“Well, I’ve been training too!”
That intense training was worth it.
The Spartan regimen almost killed us, but looking back, it was the right choice. It gave us the edge we needed to take on a soldier.
“Kitakami-san, Marcus is down. He’s not dead, but he’ll self-destruct soon enough.”
“No, let me finish him off myself.”
Kitakami held the nail gun in her left hand, aiming at Marcus’s head. But despite his grievous state, he was laughing.
“…Heh. Don’t think this is over, Hayasaka…”
“What do you mean?”
“Soon…soon, Whitewater, the professional private military company, will come for you.”
Whitewater?! An American private military firm? I’d heard they operated in places like Afghanistan. These guys were true professionals.
“Why would Whitewater get involved?”
“Heh…Simple. John Smith and I…we’re both with Whitewater.”
So Tachikawa hired soldiers from Whitewater. And now they’re coming, with a full force.
That explains the five men from last night.
“It’s over. Time to die.”
Kitakami prepared to fire the nail gun—but before she could, Marcus was shot in the chest.
Bang!
Who was that…who shot him?!
Or was it…Whitewater already…?!

Chapter 79: Defeat the Soldiers and Carry Off the Treasure
A gunshot rang out, drawing everyone’s eyes toward the sound—
“Wh-Why are you here…Chitose?!”
There was no mistaking her: that small, cute girl was Chitose. Swiftly, she holstered her American-made Bolt Anaconda, her actions as cool and calculated as a Western gunslinger.
“Surprised, huh? Sorry for the wait, everyone.”
“Yeah, but…why?”
“Didn’t Riko say she was monitoring Hayasaka and the others’ vitals from Honshu? When they went dark, I came to help.”
“But how?”
“I’ll spare you the details…”
Apparently, Chitose had stowed away in the cargo hold of our private jet and parachuted down to the island when we fell. Seriously? How had she managed to sneak in without anyone noticing?
“Ch-Chitose, I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“It’s nothing compared to our training,” Chitose replied, flashing a smile at Amane before looking down at Marcus, taking out her Anaconda and firing several times at him.
“H-Hey, Chitose! That’s overkill!”
“I need to make sure he’s down for good. Kitakami taught me that.”
She was right, though…Ever since Kitakami trained us, everyone had become way tougher.
In any case, we were saved.
“Kitakami’s been shot in the shoulder. We need to stabilize him…Amane, can you help?”
“Yes, Kitakami taught me how.”
Amane brought out bandages and gauze and began treating Kitakami while I searched Marcus for any intel.
I found something—a smartphone. Thankfully, it was fingerprint-locked, so I used Marcus’s finger to unlock it. As I scrolled through, I saw it was all in English.
“How’s it going, Hayasaka?” Kaede asked.
“It’s Marcus’s phone, but I’m no good with English.”
“Let me see,” she offered. “I’m pretty good at English, actually.”
Great—Kaede could handle the translations.
“Could you check his schedule or social media?”
“Got it.”
Kaede tapped skillfully, eventually landing on something.
“What is it?”
“Looks like info on Whitewater. There’s an operational plan detailed here.”
“No way! Tell me about it!”
“Sure. This says there’s a ‘Treasure Island Landing Operation’ to lure you and Kitakami here and locate the treasure. Once the treasure’s found, they planned to kill you both.”
So that was their plan from the start. They were going to betray us…and kill us off.
“Chitose, any other intel?”
“Just the team: Marcus, Alex, Owen, Jake, and Darius.”
So, those five from last night were Whitewater’s soldiers.
“Then who were the other two?”
“The two? Oh, yeah, from last night’s fight.”
“Do you know?”
“Yes. They were Hoshi Hikari and Tsuki Luna.”
“The Oda twins? Those two?”
“Yep. For some reason, they were there. It surprised me too.”
The twins had been there…fighting soldiers? That’s hard to believe. Who are those two, anyway? I hope they’re alright.
“Are they safe?”
“They’re fine. They escaped and are in a different location now.”
Glad to hear it. I’d been wanting to talk to them more since our last encounter.
Kitakami’s first aid was done, and his condition seemed stable.
“How are you feeling, Kitakami?”
“The bullet went through, and thanks to Amane’s treatment, I’ll manage.”
“Just don’t overdo it.”
“Yes, I’ll rest for a while.”
“No worries. You’ve always protected us, so it’s my turn to protect you.”
“Very reassuring.”
With a gentle smile, Kitakami lost consciousness. Pushing himself too hard as usual.
“Hayasaka,” Amane spoke up, “we should move the treasure while we can.”
“Right, Amane, but there’s so much…We can’t take it all.”
As I pondered what to do, Chitose offered a solution.
“It’s okay. I had Hoshi and Tsuki wait outside, and we’ve got a boat ready too.”
“Oh, that’s perfect. Good thing you’re here, Chitose.”
“Hehe. Compliment me more!”
“Alright, I’ll shower you with praise later.”
We used the entrance Marcus had dug to start hauling out as much treasure as possible.
It was heavy.
There was still so much treasure that we couldn’t carry it all in bags.
“Kusamochi’s right. Sandbags won’t cut it. It would take at least a week to collect everything—there are tons of gold coins, silver coins, and more.”
And not just coins—there were goblets, gold bars, and jewels too.
“We’ll have to deal with the remaining four soldiers before we can safely transport this.”
“Are you serious, Hayasaka?!”
Kaede looked pale as she shouted.
“They’ll attack us sooner or later. We need to act first.”
“They’re pros! How do you plan to fight them?”
“We took down Marcus. We’ve got his Uzi, grenades…though it’s still not much.”
“Or we could set up traps?”
“Good idea.”
Traps would be the best approach.
“Hold on. I brought more guns, just in case.”
“Chitose, you’re too prepared! Where’d you get them?”
“They were on the plane. I found this Anaconda in the luggage too.”
So that’s how it was. They’d stashed weapons on the private jet.
Chitose handed me a Bolt King Cobra.
It felt nostalgic, this gun. Maybe Marcus had a thing for collecting revolvers.
We distributed handguns and tucked them into our holsters.
“But the others have M4 Carbines or AK-47s,” Amane pointed out.
“How do you know?”
“I heard it in last night’s recon. I recognized the gunfire; I watch a lot of military videos online.”
But why had Marcus chosen an Uzi? Maybe he preferred its portability?
“Alright then, we’ll fight to secure the treasure.”
Having made up his mind, Ooi declared his intent, followed by Amane, Kaede, and Kusamochi. Kitakami even joined in weakly.
“Alright. Chitose, can you contact the Oda twins?”
“Yep! I’ve got this transceiver!”
Oh, a transceiver! It’s amazing it still works.
