Chapter 5: Collecting Tools and Mysterious Items
I tried to stop her, but Kitakami moved quickly like a ninja and attacked Amane.
…No, she passed by and stabbed a knife into the cave wall.
“Yikes!?”
Amane shouted in surprise, but she wasn’t stabbed.
On closer inspection, Kitakami had actually impaled a small scorpion.
“That was close, Amane-san.”
“Eh…?”
A scorpion the size of a palm was stuck on Kitakami’s knife. …Wow, a scorpion. Is there such a thing on this island?
Though, I have no idea what kind of island this is.
Wait, hold on…
I think…I remember from my useless trivia knowledge that scorpions are found in the “Southwest Islands.”
That might be right.
So, this island is…the Southwest Islands…? So, we weren’t swept that far away. I don’t have confirmation, though.
Originally, our class was supposed to go sightseeing on Yakushima.
…But.
Hmm…I’ll stop thinking about it for now.
“Good thing, Amane. Scorpion venom is supposed to be so dangerous that death is better.”
“Is that really true, Hayasaka-kun?”
“Just something I heard on TV.”
“I-I see…Thank you, Kitakami-san…I was a bit mistaken.”
Amane was grateful for the help.
On the other hand, Kitakami was cutting off the scorpion’s tail.
She dug a hole and buried it. Wow, she really takes care of the poison.
“No, Hayasaka-kun is right. This isn’t the time for arguments.
Also, this island, rich in nature, has many dangerous plants and animals. Let’s help each other.”
Kitakami seemed unusually cooperative.
With our opinions aligned, we headed towards the beach.
After walking for about fifteen minutes…the sea.
A considerable amount of time had passed since then, and the sun was beginning to set. This is bad; we need to prepare our sleeping area soon, or it will be cold at night.
“Amane, Kitakami, listen up. Sorry for asking right after arriving at the sea, but let’s split up the task of collecting materials.”
“Eh…I don’t want to go alone.”
“I understand. So, Kitakami, sorry, but could you use your knife to collect dry branches and plants? We’ll need them for the campfire and sleeping area.”
Kitakami stared at me with her arms crossed, looking calm.
When she looked so dignified…it was hard to react.
“Understood. I’ll take care of it. It’s more efficient to use a knife for cutting branches, so leave it to me.”
“Thanks. I’ll look for plastic bottles and things. Any container will work for collecting water, cooking, and storing food.”
“Be careful, both of you.”
Kitakami left with a cool expression.
Since she’s a survival game enthusiast, Kitakami should be okay on her own. She handled that scorpion with a single stab, so she’s no ordinary person.
“Kitakami-san is kind of strange, huh?”
“Yeah, Amane. Maybe it’s due to her boyfriend or something? Normally, high school girls don’t do survival games, right? I don’t mean to be prejudiced.”
“Boyfriend? I don’t think she has one.”
“How do you know?”
“I know because she’s in the same class. We talk normally.”
That makes sense.
I was just too much of a loner.
I can’t admit that today is my first time talking to a girl.
I hid my sadness deep inside and looked for plastic items.
Plastic bottles, candy wrappers, cup noodle containers, anything. Even rainwater would be useful.
“Look for things washed up on the shore.”
“Got it. I’ll search over there.”
“Pick up anything useful.”
An hour later—
We returned to the cave and checked what each of us had collected.
First, Kitakami.
“I gathered quite a few branches.”
She had neatly bundled the branches using a strong, rope-like plant. With this many, we could use them as firewood. It should last a day without any problem.
She also collected large leaves and dead leaves. These could be used as a mattress if spread on the ground.
“I found two empty plastic bottles. I also discovered a fishing net. It’s a bit damaged, but it’s a miracle.”
Amane clapped and praised me, saying, “Wow, Hayasaka-kun, you did well!”
Kitakami also said, “With the net, we can do net fishing. That’s impressive. I’m quite impressed.”
I felt very good.
I didn’t know it could feel this nice to be praised by cute girls.
School was boring, but since coming to this deserted island, I’ve been having fun.
Maybe I have a talent for survival.
“Now, it’s my turn.”
“What did Amane find?”
“Well…actually…”
“Actually?”
“I didn’t find anything…”
Amane started crying like a waterfall.
She found nothing at all!
Are you kidding me!?
After walking around so much and coming back with zero harvest…It’s okay, but I would have been happy if she had at least picked up some shells.
“Hey, Amane. Did you really find nothing?”
“Umm…It’s not exactly nothing.”
“Oh? So you did find something after all.”
Amane reached into her skirt pocket and pulled something out.
W-What is this junk…?
Why was such a thing lying around?
Unbelievable!!

Chapter 6: Maybe She’s a Yandere
What Amane picked up initially seemed like junk.
However, the black thing was unmistakable.
For a moment, I thought it was a smartphone—but it wasn’t.
“What is this?”
“Amane, did you pick this up?”
“I’m not sure. It doesn’t look useful, but I brought it anyway after some hesitation.”
I took it and checked if it was usable.
North came closer with interest.
“Hayasaka, that’s a ‘transceiver,’ isn’t it?”
“Definitely. And it looks like it might work.”
Although it seemed used, it didn’t appear to have any issues. But why was something like this lying around?
If it works, we could contact “someone.”
The hope is slim, though.
“A transceiver, like the radio?”
“Yes, Amane. You found something good.”
“It was quite far from here. Oh, and I think I saw some footprints.”
“Then, other classmates might have washed ashore.”
“Really!? Sorry I didn’t say it sooner.”
“No, let’s try to contact them with this transceiver.”
“Can we do that?”
I nodded and checked the transceiver. I kept the frequency as is and pressed the transmit button.
I spoke into it.
“This is Hayasaka from Class 2-A. Hayasaka here. Please respond.”
There was no response.
Maybe the other person didn’t have a transceiver.
Just as I was about to give up, noise started coming from the speaker…and I heard a voice.
“Huh…?”
“This is Chitose from Class 2-C. I was hoping someone would find a transceiver. I’d like to join you soon. Over.”
So, there were others who washed ashore after all. And the voice was cute…another girl from a different class?
Before replying, I checked with Amane and Kitakami.
“Looks like it’s Chitose from Class 2-C. We should meet them.”
Amane raised her hand and said, “I agree.”
Kitakami hesitated a bit but agreed.
“It’s better to have more help. Hayasaka, contact them.”
I nodded and replied to the unknown Chitose.
“Got it. Please tell us your location.”
“—We are in a cave. We might take some time since we are deep inside. Over.”
A cave?
Wait, could it be…they are inside this cave!?
No way.
I decided to ask.
“Chitose, is this the cave that is fifteen minutes from the beach? Over.”
“Yes. We’ve been exploring and walking a lot. We’re nearing the entrance. Over.”
—So, they are right there!
A girl who seemed to be Chitose with a transceiver appeared.
“Could it be…Chitose-san?”
“…Huh? Three people!? Wow, I’m so happy. I thought I would die alone!”
A small high school girl bounced over. She was tiny but cute, with a cat-like charm.
Chitose jumped at me.
Despite her small size, she seemed to have a sizable chest, touching my stomach. Soft as marshmallows.
“Wow!!”
“I’m so glad…! You’re the one who sent the signal earlier!”
“Y-Yes, but I didn’t expect anyone to be in the cave.”
“I found this cave while wandering the island. But I was also surprised. I didn’t think anyone survived that night. Normally, you’d die.”
I agree.
I wonder why I survived. And why Amane and Kitakami washed ashore…it seems too concentrated with classmates.
There must be other islands.
Some students might be drifting at sea.
And why are they all girls?
This is the third one.
And again, another beauty.
Chitose has a different kind of youthful charm compared to Amane and Kitakami.
She wore black ribbons in twin tails, looking childish, but somehow makes you want to protect her.
“Anyway, it’s great that we met. I’m Hayasaka.”
“Nice to meet you, Hayasaka-kun!”
She winked with a bright smile, and my heart skipped a beat—though that’s a secret.
“I’m Amane. Amane Ai.”
“Oh, Amane-san from Class A! You’re some kind of lady, right? I know about you.”
“Ah…so Amane is like that.”
No wonder she seems so refined. Her gestures are all so elegant.
“This is Kitakami, with the blonde hair.”
I introduced Kitakami, who had been silently staring at Amane.
“Kitakami-san, right? Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you.”
Kitakami gave a brief greeting.
She seems to be somewhat shy around strangers, like me.
While scratching my cheek, Kitakami tapped my shoulder.
“What’s up, Kitakami?”
“I need to talk to you.”
“Talk?”
“Over here.”
We stepped away from Amane and Chitose.
“What’s up? Why the secrecy?”
“Hayasaka-kun…don’t be too smitten with her.”
“Huh? Was I showing that?”
“Your face was all soft. I…I want you to trust only me.”
She said this bashfully, and I felt shy too.
…My face is burning.
It’s the first time a girl has asked me to “trust only her.”
“Of course, I trust you, Kitakami. I heard you’re good at survival skills and have a knife.”
“Yes…so…”
Blushing, Kitakami pointed her knife at me. …Hey! That’s dangerous!
“Hey, Kitakami. That’s risky.”
“I’ll stab you if you cheat on me, okay?”
“What…are you talking about!?”
When did Kitakami and I become like this? I don’t get it!
“It’s just a joke. It’s a possibility.”
“I-I see. Just a joke…haha…”
Her eyes are serious!
***
Tonight is apparently a tropical night.
It’s hot, and I can’t stop sweating…and there are a lot of bugs, which is tough.
While leaning against the cave wall, Amane started taking off her uniform. What’s going on!?
“Wait, Amane!”
“But…I’m getting sweaty.”
“That doesn’t mean you should be in your underwear…”
“I’m used to being in my underwear at home. Hayasaka-kun!! Don’t look!”
Amane tried to cover herself with her arms, but it was too late.
I used the brief moment to capture it with my “god-eye camera” (my keen eyesight).
Amane has bigger breasts than I expected.
“Alright, alright. I won’t look, but if it enters my field of vision, it’s your fault.”
I turned away and checked the plastic bottles.
I was collecting droplets of water, but it’s still a small amount. It will take a day to get enough to drink.
Chitose seemed tired from exploring the cave and was sleeping.
Kitakami was making something.
“Here, it’s finished.”
“Oh, impressive. Is that a torch? It looks unusual.”
“Yes. This is driftwood and a log I found on the beach. By cutting grooves like slicing a cake, it can serve as a candle.”
“Is that a ‘Swedish torch’? That’s quite sophisticated. You know your stuff.”
The Swedish torch.
A historic campfire dating back to the 1600s.
By making cuts in an asterisk shape and burning from the center of the log, it creates high heat for a long time.
So, Kitakami has been carving wood to make that. Maybe she’s even better at survival skills than me. It’s interesting.
