Chapter 24 – The Play
And then, it was the day of the performance.
I was in my black costume, checking out the pumpkin carriage made out of cardboard, when Yuu-chan came in.
“I’m nervous.”
Yuu-chan’s expression was pretty stiff before her turn. I wonder if she’ll be okay.
Then, Takanashi called out from behind.
“It’ll be okay, just trust in what you’ve practiced so far.”
“Yeah.”
Oh no. Takanashi and Yuu-chan are getting along well. As I thought, they’ve become good friends while practicing together!
I hurriedly got in between Yuu-chan and Takanashi.
“It’ll be okay, Yuu-chan! You’ve gotten a lot better, so you don’t have to overthink it. Just enjoy yourself and you’ll be fine.”
As I rambled on, Yuu-chan looked puzzled for a moment, then nodded happily.
“Yeah, I’ll do that.”
Phew, what a relief.
Then, Mikan patted me on the shoulder.
“There you go! That was a good thing to say!”
R-really?
To think that Mikan would praise me…
“Yeah, that’s right. I’ll have fun acting too.”
Momozono-san smiled softly at me.
Her smile is so cute that I can feel my body temperature rise.
“Well, I can speak casually since I’m just the stagehand, but still, haha.”
I quickly try to cover it up.
That was close.
With a smile like that aimed at me… I could easily fall for her.
After all, Momozono-san belongs to Takanashi.
And so, the play began.
“Yeah, I want to go to the ball too.”
Shalalaaaaah.
“I will grant your wish.”
Here it comes. It’s almost time for my performance.
My part is brief, but switching the mouse plate I’m holding to a horse and the pumpkin to the carriage is quite a challenge, and I manage to pull it off while feeling quite nervous.
“But I don’t have any heels to wear to the ball.”
“Don’t worry, Cinderella. Here you go.”
Momozono-san presented a pair of heels.
The glass heels were the most difficult part of the costume, but I found some clear, glittery shoes in the children’s shoe section that fit Yuu-chan perfectly, so I managed to get it done.
Thinking about it, maybe it was the right decision to make Yuu-chan Cinderella after all.
“Phew, good work.”
Momozono-san returned after her performance.
“Good work.”
Looking up at the stage, Yuu-chan in a dress and Takanashi dressed as a prince were dancing gracefully.
“So beautiful…”
Momozono-san was entranced.
Yuu-chan said she was nervous about dancing without her glasses, but she danced well, and the long hair wig looked good on her. As expected of a pretty girl.
Takanashi, on the other hand, said “I’m just an ordinary high school student,” but he’s actually pretty good looking and suits the prince look.
Looking at him like this, I can see why everyone fell for him. He’s a born main character, he’s in a completely different league from me.
“Takeda-kun, isn’t it your turn soon?”
“Oh, that’s right. This is no time to be daydreaming.”
I hurriedly changed into my servant’s clothes and went out onto the stage.
“Isn’t there one more daughter here?”
“Yes, there is, but she’s really shabby and a dust-covered ashen girl who can’t do her job! You don’t have to check!”
As always, Yamada’s high-spirited…
“We need to check everyone. Now, Cinderella…”
I presented the glass slipper and Yuu-chan timidly put her foot in it.
“Oh, it fits perfectly!”
“So you were the one from back then…”
Cinderella nodded in response to the prince’s question.
“Yes.”
“Please be my bride!”
“W-what did you say!? This is impossible!! Huuuuhhhh???!! This is totally impossible!!!”
Yamada bit down on his handkerchief.
“And so, Cinderella married the prince and lived happily ever after.”
The play ended with Momozono-san’s narration, and we all gathered on the stage at the end.
“Thank you everyone for watching!”
It was then that I saw the audience from the stage for the first time.
The audience was made up of small children and their guardians, and the children were all applauding with shining eyes.
I was surprised to find myself feeling a little emotional at the sight.
——Just then, I spotted a familiar blonde in the audience.
Huh? Could that be…?
As soon as the curtain fell at the end of the play, Takanashi dashed off.
“Ikkun, where are you going?”
“I have something to take care of… Wait a minute!”
I secretly chased after Takanashi, and, as expected, he was talking to the student council president who was in the audience.
“Student Council President! You came to watch, didn’t you!?”
Takanashi grabbed the student council president’s arm, and the student council president blushed.
“D-d-don’t misunderstand me. I was just watching over the students of this school to make sure they didn’t put on any inappropriate plays in front of children.”
Wait, wait, wait. Who again has been engaging in all sorts of inappropriate activities at school?!
“However, it seems that there was nothing like that this time, and although I thought it was a mediocre performance, my sister seemed to enjoy it.”
Saying this, the student council president stroked the head of the beautiful blonde girl next to her.
Come to think of it, there was a scene like this in the original work.
“Therefore, as requested, I will be increasing the club funds slightly.”
The student council president put her hands on her hips and declared.
Don’t you lie!! It’s because Yamada and I threatened you!
“Ah… Thank you!”
Takanashi bowed his head gratefully.
The student council president brushed her long blonde hair back with a satisfied look on her face and left.
“…The student council president is surprisingly a nice person.”
Takanashi muttered.
Well, it’s probably better for Takanashi not to know the truth.
And so the drama club’s first play came to a close.
