Chapter 42: To All Those Who Love Grapes
The incident was resolved, but the aftermath was not going to wrap up so easily.
–The Assault on the Duke’s Daughter Incident.
If it had only been an attack by thieves, that would have been one thing, but with a spy having infiltrated the duke’s household from within, it was not going to be that straightforward.
From now on, the duke’s family was bound to fall into even greater chaos.
“Ask-kun, here you go.”
“Thanks.”
I took the wine glass from Safira and looked out over the vineyard from the terrace.
There, I could see the soldiers capturing the thieves. The soldiers dispatched from the academy.
Luxol was among them, and when he noticed me, he waved energetically.
“…I can’t forgive anyone who messes with Ask-kun.”
“Safira?”
I waved back lightly, but then a glare full of resentment came flying from beside me. It was scary, so I turned away and pretended not to notice.
That was an impressive number of people, though.
Right after we took down the thieves, the soldiers arrived.
Last night, I had sent Luxol a love letter that said something like “I’m going to be attacked by thieves. It’s scary. Help me,” and it seemed to have worked perfectly.
I never thought more than fifty would show up, though.
I had not really counted on them as fighting strength.
The goal was more about cleaning up afterward. After beating the organization members senseless, rounding them up one by one, and having personnel to catch any who tried to escape.
That was about the extent of it.
In the original story, sure, but the current Luxol was not that strong yet. He could probably put up a good fight against Lord Masquerade at best.
Please awaken soon. Then I would not have to step in anymore.
While thinking such things, I swirled the wine glass and took in the aroma.
“…Wonderful.”
As always, the grapes were the best.
Thanks to the larger glass, the scent felt even richer. The fruitiness and oak notes tickled my nose, instantly soothing the fatigue from the earlier fight.
“Hey, Ask-kun.”
As I indulged in that aroma and bliss, Safira took my arm.
Then she whispered in my ear.
“–I love you.”
“Uh, yeah.”
“I love you. Until I die, no, even if I am reborn, I will love only you.”
After making such an intensely heavy declaration, she rubbed her cheek against mine like a cat.
It was almost like marking her territory.
“Safira.”
I took a sip of wine and asked her.
“–Do you like grapes?”
“I like Ask-kun.”
“Oh, right.”
Why did no one ever answer this question? I was getting genuinely sad from being ignored so much.
Well, at least the vineyard spreading out before me was on my side.
I held the wine glass in one hand and gazed at the scenery outside.
The sun was beginning to rise, and the grapes bathed in orange sunlight shone majestically like jewels.
“–This really is the best.”
“I love you.”
Safira murmured while looking at the same view beside me.
In the fifteen years since I had reincarnated into this world, I had never seen a more beautiful sight.
It truly was the greatest view.
So, yes.
If there were words to offer to all those who love grapes, they would be,
“Ask-kun, I love you.”
–Do not casually confine a duke’s daughter.
The end.
