Valis Alveria (Protagonist / First Prince)
The protagonist of this story. He was the eldest son of the current King of Alveria and the young crown prince expected to inherit the throne. Inside, however, he was Ryuusuke Sakagami—a man who had lived thirty-five years in modern Japan. His last memory before reincarnating was of reading a web novel titled “The Crown and the Cage of Purity,” a villainess story in which he found himself reborn as the prince, Valis.
To avoid the fate that awaited that character—trampling upon the villainess heroine, Reina, and later being met with poetic justice—he used the knowledge from his previous life, particularly his expertise in public sanitation from working at the Sewer Bureau, to dedicate himself to governmental reforms.
He was also a researcher of Ancient Magic, known as Archive Arts, possessing knowledge on par with royal court magicians. Especially in the field of everyday magic, he successfully applied Archive Arts to recreate and expand upon domains previously monopolized by Spirit Arts, turning them into practical magical tools.
As a result, he achieved outcomes that rivaled, and in some cases even surpassed, Spirit Arts in versatility and cost-efficiency—greatly contributing to the kingdom’s stability. Though he occasionally made lewd jokes involving words like “eroge” or “harem,” in reality he was so absorbed in his political duties that he often forgot his own desires, frequently finding himself overwhelmed by Reina and Milia’s passion in such situations.
Reina Agreia (Heroine / Fiancée / Marquis’s Daughter)
The main heroine of the story. The only daughter of House Agreia and fiancée to Valis. She was currently twenty-one years old—older than Valis. A noble beauty with golden hair and blue eyes, she had, from childhood, taught herself to act as the perfect lady. Her dignified composure never wavered, even before Valis, as she had cultivated it for years to become a queen worthy of the man she had loved since childhood.
At the same time, she was also dedicated to martial training, capable of crossing swords on equal footing with the Knight Commander—one of the most formidable combatants in the kingdom. Clad in azure armor, she inspired the knights who followed her, earning the reverent title of “Valkyrie.”
As a true embodiment of noblesse oblige, she always placed others before herself, her nobility shining in both spirit and deed. In the original web novel “The Crown and the Cage of Purity,” she was the heroine of a “villainess story.” There, her attempts to awaken Valis from his decadence led to her being hated and exiled—a tragic role.
In the current world, thanks in part to Valis’s reforms on sexual education, she had also become an exemplary figure in that regard. Overflowing with maternal affection, she now wielded a “sweet sadism,” delighting in teasing and leading Valis in the night.
Milia Elfein (Heroine / Saint / Duke’s Daughter)
The second heroine of the story. The daughter of Duke Elfein, and both childhood friend and dearest companion of Reina. A lively beauty with chestnut hair tied in a high ponytail. She was cheerful, open, and full of energy.
Renowned not only within the Kingdom but also abroad, she was known for her extraordinary talent in Divine Arts, which had awakened within her at the age of seven. With her friendly, mischievous demeanor, she often greeted Valis casually with, “Hey there, Prince!”, standing in sharp contrast to the serious Reina and serving as the group’s mood maker.
However, beneath her brightness lay a sensitive soul. In her childhood, she suffered from an illness brought on by poor sanitary conditions. After being saved by Valis, she fell in love with him, but since he was her best friend Reina’s fiancé, she wrestled with guilt and chose to study abroad to distance herself. Eventually, Reina saw through her feelings. Touched by her friend’s magnanimity, Milia resolved to be true to her emotions and returned home.
She now possessed a somewhat obsessive side—one who swore, “For Reina and Valis, I would give up anything.” Her personal preferences leaned toward the masochistic. Though she playfully provoked Valis with teasing charm, in truth she longed to be overpowered—an “inviting submissive” who found joy in surrendering to his dominance.
The Kingdom and Its Powers
・Kingdom of Alveria
The main setting of the story, and the central realm where Valis served as crown prince. Though officially an absolute monarchy, in practice, it operated under a system where the king ruled alongside the council of influential nobles.
The nobility was hereditary, and social disparity existed, but the principle of noblesse oblige remained strong. Commoners with talent could still rise through the Knight Order, earning rank and respect. Thanks to this system, the kingdom had fewer cases of starvation and maintained relatively stable public order compared to neighboring countries.
In recent years, Valis’s public sanitation initiatives—rebuilding the water and sewage systems and establishing public baths—had drastically reduced epidemics, marking remarkable progress. Though relations with the southern Kingdom of Beltea had worsened due to refugee conflicts, Valis’s diplomatic refugee policy had begun to show signs of reconciliation.
・The Holy Kingdom Verdia
A theocratic nation devoted to the Creator God Zai Arios. The Pope sat at its pinnacle, and the country held exclusive control over Divine Arts. Its Holy Knights, all trained users of Divine Arts, were among the strongest military forces in the world.
Though friendly relations with Alveria were maintained, there had been religious disputes in the past. Milia had originally been scheduled to receive her sainthood certification in this country before returning to Alveria.
・Kingdom of Beltea
A maritime nation located south of Alveria. Once prosperous, it fell into ruin under the debauchery of its previous king. Following a revolution, conflict broke out between the nobles who had overthrown the crown and the populist faction, resulting in nearly thirty years of civil war. The refugee crisis caused by that conflict had further strained this kingdom’s relations with Alveria.
Terminology
・Magic Systems
Four distinct magical systems existed in this world:
Divine Arts: Miracles granted by the gods.
Spirit Arts: Power born from contracts with spirits.
Archive Arts: Ancient, knowledge-based magic learned through study.
Valcode: The arts of demons, considered taboo for human research.
Both Divine Arts and Spirit Arts depended heavily on innate talent—Divine Arts being blessings from heaven, and Spirit Arts being gifts often found among demi-humans such as elves and dwarves.
By contrast, Archive Arts were established as an academic discipline, learnable through skill and effort. Though weaker in raw power, their adaptability allowed them to cover a wide range of spells—from offensive and healing to everyday applications—making them highly versatile.
Valcode, the heretical magic of demons, was said to have been used by humans in ancient times, but its practice was now strictly forbidden under the surveillance of the Holy Kingdom Verdia. The mere recognition of a practitioner’s existence was enough for an entire nation to be declared a target of Holy War (Jihad).
・Demons (Val Nostia)
A collective term for subhuman races hostile to humankind, such as goblins and orcs. Considered beings who once rebelled against the gods. For the past century, there had been no large-scale demon organizations—only minor skirmishes and isolated encounters.
・Web Novel: “The Crown and the Cage of Purity”
The story Ryuusuke Sakagami read before his reincarnation. A popular “villainess genre” web novel whose protagonist was Feril, a modern Japanese office lady reborn as a margrave’s daughter. The plot revolved around Feril using her knowledge from an otome game to protect the villainess, Reina, and overthrow the corrupt prince, Valis.
The novel mainly focused on character banter, with minimal worldbuilding. In fact, the kingdom’s name was never even mentioned. Valis’s prior knowledge was limited to “Reina is the heroine, Valis is the villain, and there’s a margrave’s daughter named Feril.”
No male characters besides Valis had significant roles. The story’s charm lay in the earnest, kind-hearted Reina and the affectionate relationships among the noble ladies drawn to her—a “soft yuri” tone that made the series popular.
