Chapter 20 – Cecil Imitation Is Actually a Woman
Imagine you have a piece of glass less than a millimeter thick in front of you.
If you were asked if you could break it, most people would say it was easy to do.
However, what if you were asked to carve an intricate pattern into the surface of that glass?
Most people would probably say it was impossible.
That is exactly what I’m trying to do.
It’s really easy to drop your own reputation to the bottom. There are a lot of ways to do that.
However, to skillfully control that reputation until it reaches a middle level is almost impossible.
And so, my current situation seems like it’s a dead end… But one plan to break through this has emerged in my mind.
Specifically——
To create an existence that stands out far more than myself.
Unfortunately, I’m currently the most noticeable person at school.
However… What if a being far more dazzling than me, even more brilliant than the sun, appeared?
Surely everyone would focus on that person and forget about me.
As with anything, the number one stands out, while number two leaves a dull impression.
That’s why I thought about giving up my number one spot to someone else.
And that person is——
——My Grim Reaper, Cecil Imitation.
“Um… are you sure you want to pair up with someone like me?”
Cecil asked with a somewhat confused smile.
We were instructed to pair up for a class set in a dungeon.
As for why I chose Cecil as my partner…
“Right now, it seems like the only way we can communicate is through Miss Elise. I find that really sad. Now that we’ve made a connection, I’d like to deepen our friendship even further. Of course, that’s if you’re okay with it.”
There’s no way she could just refuse after hearing something like that.
“…Yeah, that’s fine. I was just thinking that I’d like to get closer to you too, Alvart-kun.”
All right.
The feeling isn’t bad.
There’s no doubt that Cecil is also interested in me.
“Well then, Miss Elise, Lumiere. It’s time for us to head out.”
First, we head down the path.
We’d all followed the same path up to a point, but when we came to a fork in the road, we deliberately chose different routes.
The purpose of this exploration was to deepen our friendship with our paired partners.
If that was the case, it would be better for us to move separately as pairs, rather than moving together as a group of four.
As we walked through the stone space, I called out to Cecil.
“Now that I think of it, I don’t know anything about your family background or where you come from. Can you tell me more about that?”
“Haha. Well, my family has served Elise’s family for generations. We’re what they call slave nobles. Apparently, in the past, we were treated really badly.”
“I see. I guess it’s different now. Your relationship speaks with her for itself.”
“Yeah. Elise herself, and her parents, are really good people. I’m sure they’d warmly welcome you as well.”
…We’re getting a little off topic.
At this point, I started talking about something else.
“Changing the subject… Can you tell me your rank in the academy?”
“My rank?”
“Yeah. Of course, it’s not like I’m going to change my attitude depending on your rank or anything like that. I’m just a little curious.”
Cecil didn’t seem particularly suspicious, and answered in a very calm tone.
“Haha. It’s not really that interesting, you know? I’m ranked 62nd in our grade, and 192nd in the academy. That makes me feel like I’m below average.”
He smiled, self-deprecatingly.
He looks exactly like the epitome of a powerful being who hides his powers and tries to live an ordinary school life.
He’s living my ideal, so I can’t help but feel jealous of him.
But eventually, that position will be mine.
I’m laying the groundwork now to shape that future.
Of course, it’s a pretty bold statement, so there will be some risk involved…
But still, it shouldn’t be such a big problem.
“Hey, Cecil-kun. Can I ask you something?”
“Hmm? What is it?”
As he tilted his head, I asked him another question.
“Are you hiding something?”
A straightforward question.
By doing this, we would inevitably get closer to each other.
It sends the message: I know you well.
At first, such an approach might seem creepy.
But if I skillfully manage the distance between us, eventually, he would accept me as an irreplaceable confidant.
My goal is to first become a supporting character who supports the main character.
Build a friendly relationship with Cecil, and boast about his abilities to those around him.
And at the right moment, I’ll let him defeat me.
If I follow that course, my status will gracefully drop to the number two spot.
I was confident that things would go this way.
I was sure that my work experience from my previous life would come in handy.
However…
“Hey, Alvart-kun.”
Contrary to what I had expected, Cecil said,
“How much do you know?”
He gave off a cold aura that sent chills down my spine.
What’s with this reaction?
The question I had asked earlier had merely implied, “Are you hiding your power?”
But this reaction feels like…
Feels like I’ve stepped on a tiger’s tail.
“Answer me, Alvart-kun. How much do you know about me?”
This is bad.
I don’t really know why, but this is bad.
Everything is so unexpected that I can’t immediately decide how to respond.
To be honest, I feel incredibly shaken.
…However, the same seems to be happening to Cecil.
“…?!”
If he were in his normal state, what happened the next moment would have been nothing more than a trivial matter.
However, he was quite shaken up.
He was unable to counter the attack of the monster that suddenly appeared from the side.
“Tch…!”
The claws of a Bearwolf slashed at his upper body.
However, Cecil’s body was not even scratched.
His total magical power was surely on the same level as Lumiere’s, or perhaps even greater.
That’s why the magic he unconsciously emitted formed a barrier that protected his body.
However…
While his body was completely unharmed, the same could not be said for his uniform, which had no special properties.
From his left arm, which he raised in an attempt to shield himself, to his entire upper body, his uniform was torn to shreds.
“You…!”
Giving in to his rage, he punched the Bearwolf, killing it with one blow.
Seeing Cecil like that, I was stunned.
…This, too, was completely unexpected.
The first thing that caught my eye was the torn glove.
His hands, which were usually hidden by them…were truly deformed.
And then, from under his torn uniform jacket… I could see the curve unique to a woman’s body.
That’s right——
Cecil wasn’t actually a he, he was actually a she.
