Chapter 16: Taking Down the S-Rank Monster [Soul Eater] with [Super Recovery]
Valeria totally got the wrong idea and was seriously impressed.
I obviously couldn’t just come out and say it was game knowledge, so I decided to let her keep thinking that.
“You bastards… I absolutely cannot let you live! Especially you, you little brat!!”
The Soul Eater swung its huge scythe down right toward Valeria’s head.
I grabbed Valeria and leaped back.
But right then my foot caught on some scattered rubble on the floor, slowing my dodge. Both my legs got sliced open and blood sprayed everywhere.
“If that little girl dies, you won’t be able to use [Miracle of Healing]. Just give up already!”
Damn it. It zeroed in on my weak point—my low MP—and switched its target to Valeria.
On top of that, the room was littered with broken furniture, making the footing awful. No way I could move fast like this.
“So that’s what it was aiming for from the very beginning…!”
As expected from an S-rank monster—it was pretty damn smart too.
Still holding Valeria, I kicked the door open and burst out into the hallway.
“What!? Your wounds regenerated even without using [Miracle of Healing]!?”
The Soul Eater had let its guard down after slashing my legs, so its reaction was slow.
“…Come to think of it, it was the same in yesterday’s fight! Your skill… isn’t it just something that lets you use [Miracle of Healing] or what!?”
It seemed really thrown off by my [Super Recovery]— thing.
It must’ve watched my duel with Gawain yesterday, but probably just brushed it off as some kind of mistake.
“Zenon, hang in there just a little longer, okay!”
Valeria closed her eyes and started chanting to cast her spell.
“Got it. Leave it to me!”
I took off running at full speed while carrying her. My legs had already regenerated and gotten even stronger—my leg power had literally doubled.
If I could just buy enough time until Valeria’s magic finished, that would be our chance to counterattack.
“You think you can escape…!”
I dodged the furious attacks coming from behind purely on instinct.
The scythe’s combo attacks carved tons of cracks into the floor and walls, but I sped up and somehow managed to pull away a bit.
“Impossible! It can’t catch up to me!? You brat—what the hell are you!?”
“Young master Zenon, what’s going on!?”
Felix heard the commotion and showed up with some guards.
I hurriedly waved them off.
“Don’t come any closer, Felix!”
“Burn everything to ashes—[Hellfire Barrage]!!”
The Soul Eater fired off its ultimate magic, trying to wipe us all out at once.
Countless black fireballs came rushing toward us.
Shit—I couldn’t protect Felix and the others too.
“Come on, Gawain! Everyone!”
Right then, a magic circle glowing with red light appeared in front of Valeria’s raised hand.
From that circle, miasma poured out and [Death Knight] Gawain leaped forward.
“What!?”
A shower of sparks exploded behind us.
Gawain’s ultra-fast sword had knocked every single one of those [Hellfire Barrage] shots out of the air.
When I glanced back, the Soul Eater was trembling with humiliation.
“Gawain has complete resistance to dark-attribute magic. That spell is useless.”
Looking closer, I saw that Gawain’s head—which I’d cut off earlier—was back attached. Looked like he’d revived.
“Now then, everyone. Give Gawain your power!”
From the magic circle Valeria created, a bunch of staff-wielding undead spellcasters—Demi Liches—also appeared.
They started stacking buff spells on Gawain one after another: [Strength Boost], [Speed Enhancement], [Physical Defense Up], [Status Resistance Grant].
Sparkling magical effects danced everywhere as Gawain’s combat power shot way up.
“This power… could it possibly reach the same S-rank as me!?”
“Exactly right.”
Valeria puffed out her chest and declared proudly.
“When I fought you before, I—your master—wasn’t calm at all. This is how Schwarz Ritter is really supposed to fight. The Gawain standing here now is one of the greatest swordsmen in the world.”
“Whoa…!”
I couldn’t help letting out an amazed breath.
When I first heard that the entire Schwarz Ritter had been wiped out, honestly, everything went dark in front of my eyes.
But their strength was still completely there. If anything, becoming undead might’ve actually boosted their overall fighting ability.
“We are proud swords of the Asphodel ducal house, bound to the honorable kingdom. No matter who the enemy is, as long as they threaten the kingdom, we will crush them!”
Gawain threw off his cloak, revealing the black armor underneath—the signature gear given to the elite knight order Schwarz Ritter under the Asphodel ducal house.
“…Framed for a crime and driven out to this remote borderland, and yet you still claim you’ll fight for the kingdom?”
“Yes. No matter where it is, the black rose blooms with pride and grace.”
Valeria gave an elegant smile.
“And above all… right now I have someone who lends me strength. I have a fiancé more dependable than anyone, someone who truly believes in me.”
“Hell yeah!”
Responding to Valeria’s words, I showered her with [Heal].
The life force Valeria had lost as the price for using [Necromancer] skill magic recovered instantly.
Valeria gave me mana, and I healed her back up—the perfect invincible combo was complete.
“Thanks to Zenon, the biggest weakness of [Necromancer] is gone. Right now I’m in a better position than your master. There’s no way I can lose!”
Valeria snapped her fingers.
Gawain moved like a gust of wind and unleashed a barrage of slashes on the Soul Eater.
“Hah! Did you forget how to bark?!”
But Gawain’s sword just passed straight through the Soul Eater’s ghostly body.
The Demi Liches also fired flame magic—the usual weakness for undead—at it, but it barely did any damage.
“I possess an immortal body. No matter how many of you there are, you can never destroy me!”
The Soul Eater slammed its scythe down into Gawain.
“Guh!?”
But even though the scythe pierced Gawain’s armor and dug into his body, Gawain caught and pinned the weapon arm.
Oh right—that scythe wasn’t part of its ghostly form; it was a physical weapon the Soul Eater had summoned.
“Now, Zenon!”
Valeria shouted that it was our chance.
“Uooooooohhh!!”
Together with her, I charged straight at the Soul Eater. The Demi Liches hit me with [Speed Enhancement] buffs to back me up.
The Soul Eater let go of the scythe, but it was already too late.
“Disappeaaaar!!”
I touched the Soul Eater and slammed three [Heal] spells in a row.
The combined power of me and Valeria.
“Gaaaaaaaaaahhh!?”
It let out a death scream that echoed like it came straight from the bottom of hell.
“Th-this can’t be! Some dropout that the Sword Saint abandoned… beating me…!!”
The saint’s minion, the Soul Eater, was burned away by the holy light and crumbled into nothing.
