ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
About two weeks had passed since the founding of the Manga Research Club, and on one particular day after school, I was called in by my math teacher to attend supplementary lessons because I had scored below passing on the test. In my previous life, I had been sickly and could hardly attend school, so even though this was my second run at life, I was absolutely terrible at studying.
There were no other students in the Student Guidance Room being used for makeup lessons besides me, which made me painfully aware of my own lack of academic ability. Generally speaking, when someone reincarnated, weren’t they usually supposed to have some kind of cheat ability? This was one of those moments where I wanted to curse God for not giving me any.
That said, I decided to take a more positive view. Maybe being able to live healthily in this life was my cheat ability. When the clock passed 5 p.m., the long, torturous makeup lesson—practically a form of punishment—finally ended. I was about to head straight home when I realized I had left my gym clothes in the classroom, so I dragged my tired body back there. Just as I put my hand on the door to enter the classroom, I heard a woman’s moaning voice.
“Aahn…♡”
I froze on the spot, unable to process the situation, and with the faint sounds of someone’s ragged breathing coming from the other side of the door, my heartbeat steadily sped up. What in the world was happening inside? Could it be… Some random couple enjoying forbidden fun in an empty classroom after school? That kind of enviable yet outrageous fantasy wouldn’t stop playing in my head, and I just stood there completely still.
“Shiratori-kun…”
The next thing I heard was the name of a student who was no longer at this school. And that made me remember. The last remaining heroine of Amakoi in this class, the class president—Suzu Chadani. In the original story, there had been exactly one scene where she comforted herself in a bathroom stall while thinking about the protagonist.
Even I had been shocked back then by the gap between her serious personality and that behavior. Which meant the person inside right now was probably Chadani-san. And judging from how close the voice sounded, she was likely leaning right against this door. Right on the other side of a thin door, a girl who always seemed so serious was… My head was instantly filled with indecent imagination.
While I stood there in a daze, unsure what to do, the worst possible thing happened. My phone rang at that exact moment. Of course I had it on silent mode, but even the vibration would absolutely carry through at this distance. I frantically reached for my phone, but it slipped right out of my hand and fell onto the hallway floor with a loud clatter.
I screwed up.
As I quietly bent down to pick it up, a pair of brown eyes peeking through the barely open door met mine.
“Ah…”
A stupid little sound escaped my mouth.
“S- since when were you…!?”
Hearing her voice made it clear—the person inside really was Chadani-san. The gap in the door was too narrow to see her expression, but her voice was filled with shock.
“Um… Just now…? S- so I didn’t hear anything…!”
“I see… So you did hear it…”
Her low, chilling tone sent a shiver down my spine.
“W- why!? I told you I didn’t hear—!”
She didn’t listen. The next words out of her mouth carried no emotion whatsoever.
“I’ll kill you. And then I’ll die too…”
Chadani-san abruptly stood up, grabbed my hand with surprising strength, and yanked me into the classroom.
“Huh? Wait—”
I couldn’t resist her force at all and fell backward onto the floor with a thud. Silent, expressionless, she looked down at me. She had milk-tea colored medium hair that reached her shoulders and black-rimmed glasses. Through the lenses, there was no mercy in those two eyes. Even though she was supposed to be a head shorter than me, the pressure of being looked down upon felt like I was being hunted by a ferocious carnivore.
“P- please… At least spare my life…”
“After seeing something like that, did you think I would just let you go?”
“No, I said I didn’t see anything…!”
“Then that means you did hear it, right…”
And there it was. I walked right into it. I’m such an idiot.
“S- sorry… I never imagined anyone would be doing that in a classroom…”
“You’re right… I fully admit I’m at fault here…”
“Then… Then…”
“But I’m sorry. Die.”
With a cold declaration, Chadani-san straddled me with her full weight and immediately wrapped her hands around my neck.
“Y- you’ve got to be kidding me…!?”
I tried to pry her hands off, but the position made it impossible for me to gather my strength.
“Please. Don’t resist. I’ll follow you right away…”
As breathing became difficult, I reflexively kicked my legs in panic. At that moment Chadani-san let out a girlish “Kyah…” and quickly got off me.
“Eh—sorry, did I hurt you?”
“N- no… It’s just that… I’m…Sensitive right now…”
The class president sat with her knees together, blushing. Even if it was to save my own life, I couldn’t believe I had done something like that to a girl without meaning to…
“…”
“…”
After a moment of silence, Chadani-san lowered her head and began to cry, letting out a soft sniffle.
“I… I can’t live anymore…”
I thought she was being a bit dramatic, but thinking about it from the opposite perspective… Honestly, I might cry too. And she was a girl, after all.
“I swear, I absolutely won’t tell anyone, and I’ll try as hard as I can to forget it too… So please don’t cry…!”
“I can’t trust you…”
“T- then I’ll do whatever you say to earn your trust, Chadani-san!”
“Really…?”
With tearful eyes, she slowly looked at me.
“W- well… I mean, I guess I do share some responsibility for this incident…”
“Then… Do the same thing I did. If you do that, I’ll trust you…”
“Huh…?”
A ridiculous sound slipped out of me at the unexpected request.
