- Chapter 19 & 20 - I Thought I Wanted to Know a Little More | But Isn't That Exactly What Marriage Hunting Is?
I Thought I Wanted to Know a Little More
After Airi and Meg both fed me, the meal turned into one accompanied by conversation.
It was fair to say it was a conversation starting from favorite foods, aimed at learning about each other’s personalities.
We did not talk much about such things at home, but thinking of it as a date made me feel the need to properly get to know the other person, which was strange.
“Shall we head out soon?”
“Yes, that sounds good.”
“Yeah.”
Since this world had no electronic money, the style was to take the bill to the register and pay in cash.
I intended to pay for everyone here. Perhaps a remnant from my time in Japan, I had the notion that the man should pay.
But that value had already become outdated even in Japan, and for a woman, being treated by a man she was not yet that close to might be a burden in itself. Still, today it could be as thanks for everyday things.
However, the bill that should have been there was nowhere to be found. When I looked around a bit, Meg had it as if it were the most natural thing.
“Let me pay, so could you give that to me?”
“Huh? Why?”
“Even if you ask why, I am troubled.”
“Because every time I went out to eat with guys I met through marriage hunting, I always paid the full bill?”
“Is that so?”
“Yeah. Because I am an adventurer and make more money than other jobs, they said it was natural for me to pay everything. When I heard that, I thought that was how it was.”
“How many people said that to you?”
“Um, about ten, I think?”
It was the same number as the times Meg had failed at confessions. I thought it was not good to talk about other opposite-sex dates on a date, but what about it?
Well, they were not ex-boyfriends, and now she was here with me, so I was not that bothered.
Hmm, from what I heard, it seemed like Meg had just met bad guys. Intending to make her pay from the start was probably not okay.
“Well, let this be my thanks for everyday things.”
“Really? You are the first to say something like that, Kaito.”
“I do not think it is anything special.”
But perhaps in this world, it was normal for the one with more money to pay. I needed to discard Japanese values as much as possible.
“Kaito has such a strange way of thinking.”
When Meg said that offhandedly, Airi, who had been watching our exchange, opened her mouth a bit excitedly.
“That is right. Kaito seems to have a different way of thinking from others.”
“Yeah, yeah, I get it. It is intriguing, right? That is why Airi follows Kaito.”
“Exactly. Because it is intriguing. The first time we met was at the adventurer’s guild, where Kaito was recruiting party members. But no one approached the F-rank Kaito. Seeing that, I spoke to him purely out of kindness. But as we interacted, I started to find him an interesting person. And I thought I wanted to know a little more.”
“I see. Sometimes you suddenly find yourself thinking only about that person. For me, I end up secretly following them and even pinpointing their house.”
From Meg’s words, I realized this world had no concept of stalking.
“Oh, but I did not actually do anything!”
Apparently, she was aware it was a bad thing. For some reason, that made me extremely relieved.
“What do you think of Kaito, Meg?”
“Like I said earlier, I think he is different from the guys I have met before. And just like Airi, I want to know a little more about him.”
“Both of you, could you not talk like that in front of me? It is hard to react.”
“Ehh? Are you embarrassed?”
“Of course.”
“But thoughts do not get across unless you put them into words.”
Meg’s expression as she said that looked a bit more serious than before.
“I agree with Meg. So Kaito, please take a bit more interest in me.”
Having heard that earlier talk, from now on, I might start to be more aware of the two of them.
“I understand your true feelings. I am happy about that too. But that is exactly why doing it with both of you at the same time feels rude to me.”
“Why? Would that not make everyone happy?”
“Huh?”
“That is right, just like Meg said. Kaito really is strange. Oh, but that is general talk, and it does not apply to me. I want to be number one.”
“Huh?”
For some reason, they were recommending two-timing… No, no, two-timing was wrong.
“Oh, but Sakura and Misty are there too. So that would make four, right? But Kaito looks really against it.”
I thought I had said something perfectly reasonable, but somehow I felt accused.
I started to think maybe I should just give in and enjoy the harem.

But Isn’t That Exactly What Marriage Hunting Is?
Night fell, and I returned home after my two-timing date with Airi and Meg.
“Oh, you are back rather early. I had assumed you would not come home tonight.”
“Would it not be strange to stay at an inn when you have your own home?”
“Sigh… Kaito, you could look at us a bit more sexually, you know.”
“Sakura, you are as bold as ever. If you arbitrarily include the other three, you will get scolded.”
I had never heard such words. Though I thought that, I was a man too, so I was somewhat concerned.
With Airi, my eyes were drawn to the gap between her dress-like skirt and the white tights that reached her knees, revealing a glimpse of her thigh.
Meg had a short skirt with bare legs and boots for high exposure. More than half of her white, beautiful legs were visible.
As for Sakura, showing her shoulders and navel was par for the course. Half of her breasts were visible too. It was an outfit where even a swimsuit seemed more decent by comparison.
Misty wore a blouse with a longer skirt, a normal look, but when Airi had stroked her beast ears, she had let out an indecent sound.
Was I not actually holding back quite well?
But in reality, what did they all think about such things?
Sakura went without saying, but what about Airi?
In my arbitrary image, elves seemed to have little interest in that sort of thing. But Airi had parents too, and I did not understand elves well.
Meg seemed to have average experience, but perhaps not. She was on a ten-loss confession streak, after all. I thought she was a good girl.
Misty, being a young lady, seemed to have been raised carefully. With her family situation, she probably could not do as she pleased.
“Um! So how was the date?”
Misty’s beast ears were twitching perkily.
“I had a great time! We had lunch together and went shopping. Doing the same things alone would be boring, after all.”
“Yes. Normally, elves do not care for crowds, but I believe I spent a very good time today.”
I was glad they both seemed to have enjoyed it. Though, since Airi and I were not very talkative to begin with, it had felt like Meg was the one carrying the conversation.
Perhaps someone like Meg, who took the initiative to talk, suited me.
“Airi and Meg, both of you look like you had fun! Kaito, you did well! So how about you, Kaito? Did you have fun?”
Misty looked at me while her beast ears twitched perkily as always. Her eyes held some pure emotion, so I decided to give an honest impression.
“I had fun. I got to know new sides of you two that I did not before, and it made me realize once again that dates are necessary.”
“You too, Kaito! In that case, we have no choice but to officially start dating!”
“Officially? Misty, are you really okay with that? You seem to like me…”
“I welcome it! I like lively things! Besides, I would be satisfied just being with you, Kaito.”
Misty thought the same as Meg. Was I the one being too fixated on having just one partner? Things were starting to feel unclear…!
“Oh, all three of you are fully satisfied. This will be fun starting tomorrow too.”
“Starting tomorrow too?”
“It is obvious. Next is my turn with Misty.”
“Huh?”
“Naturally. Dating only Airi and Meg would leave Misty and me out in the cold.”
“I agree with Sakura too! Kaito, Sakura, and me. What fun things await us?”
“Huh?”
“After my turn with Misty, you will go on a date with someone else again.”
“Again?”
“Yes. You repeat that. But isn’t that exactly what marriage hunting is?”
And so I spent days going on dates in rotation with the four girls, and half a year passed in the blink of an eye.
