Final Chapter: The Losing Jail Guard Makes Hamburg Steak
“And… well, that’s pretty much what happened.”
“So, you were able to save your friend. That’s wonderful.”
After returning to the Demon Lord’s castle aboard the Mecha Baulnout, I reported everything to Marisela, the mother of Demon Lord Lucifelle.
She listened to my story with a warm smile, and as soon as I finished, she gently patted my head.
…Not gonna lie, it felt kind of nice.
“By the way, Lady Marisela…”
“Yes, dear?”
“Could you do something about the Demon Lord, please?”
“Oh my, I’m afraid that’s beyond me…”
For some reason, Lucifelle had been chomping on my head the entire time.
It was painfully obvious she was in a foul mood.
“Uh, Demon Lord?”
“What?”
“Can you please calm down? Also, why are you this mad in the first place?”
“I WANTED TO GO TOO!!”
“Ehh?”
“I WANTED TO RIDE THAT BIG THING AND FIGHT!!”
The “big thing” was clearly referring to Mecha Baulnout.
When we returned with it, Elette, Laecia, and I, Lucifelle had been absolutely mesmerized, her eyes practically sparkling.
As I struggled to pry her off me, I tried to explain myself.
“We didn’t exactly fight with it, you know…”
“I don’t care!! What matters is you left me out, and that’s what ticks me off!!”
So, she was mad about being excluded.
“Oh my, Lucifelle is just sulking because she couldn’t enjoy delicious meals while Lugus was away.”
“Wha—!? T-That’s not it!! I don’t care about that at all!!”
“Alright, alright. How about I make some hamburg steak today?”
“Hamburg steak!? I want it!! Make it now!!”
I headed to the kitchen and got to work, quickly preparing the ground meat mixture for the hamburg steak.
Since there wasn’t a meat grinder available, I had to chop the meat repeatedly with a knife. It was tedious, but everything else was simple enough.
“Let’s toss in some finely chopped green peppers too.”
Lucifelle wasn’t a fan of bitter vegetables like green peppers, but if I minced them finely enough, she wouldn’t notice.
I mixed the ground meat with eggs, breadcrumbs, and onions in a bowl, kneading it thoroughly until it became sticky.
Then, to remove any air, I slapped the mixture back and forth between my hands repeatedly like playing catch.
I made sure to press a small dent in the center of each patty to ensure even cooking.
Heating a pan with a thin layer of oil, I cooked the patties over medium heat for about three minutes, letting them brown nicely. After flipping them over, I covered the pan and let them steam on low heat until cooked through.
…Alright, they’re ready.
“Perfect.”
“Hurry and hand it over!!”
“Did you wash your hands properly?”
“I did!!”
Lucifelle thrust her hands out to show me, as if to prove her point. Satisfied, I plated a hamburg steak and handed it to her.
The moment she took the plate, she bolted out of the kitchen.
She was probably headed off to share it with Marisela.
“Well then…”
I plated another serving and headed to my usual workplace —the underground dungeon.
When I got there, I found Elette in the middle of crafting some suspicious-looking magical device while Laecia stood nearby, practically in tears.
“P-Please save me, Master!! You’re the only one who can stop this psycho madwoman!!”
“That’s rude, Lassie.”
“It’s Laecia!!”
“…What exactly is going on here?”
To think Laecia, a high-ranking officer in the Demon Lord’s army, was reduced to tears.
What in the world was Elette trying to do to her?
“I’m simply trying to help fulfill your wish to become stronger by modifying your body.”
“That’s not what I meant!! I said I wanted weapons, not… this!!”
“There’s no need to worry. You’ll only be able to speak in ‘Eeek!’ sounds when I’m done.”
“…Miss Elette, if it means I can shoot rocket punches, feel free to modify my body. Heck, I wouldn’t mind becoming a full cyborg.”
“Master!?”
“I have no plans to make you a full cyborg. After all, I want to have children with you someday.”
Whoa. She just threw that out there again.
Her tone was so nonchalant that it caught me off guard. Before I could respond, she unlocked the cell and stepped out.
She must have made another duplicate key. I’ll have to confiscate that later—
“So, Lugus, don’t you want to have children with me?”
“…Eh?”
Did she… just say my name correctly for once?
“Oh, hamburg steak today? It looks delicious. I’ll help myself.”
“Uh, yeah, go ahead. But, wait… about my name—”
“Hmm? Is there something wrong with your name, Lugus-suss?”
Wait… did I mishear that?
Just as I was feeling a bit flustered by Elette’s sudden remark, commotion erupted from above.
Had another intruder come to assassinate Lucifelle?
Before long, the castle guards arrived at the dungeon, dragging a captured intruder.
And that intruder turned out to be…
“It… It’s been a while, Sir Lugus.”
“What are you doing here, Miss Katiana?”
Apparently, the one causing the commotion was Katiana.
“T-This isn’t what it looks like!! Please, let me explain!!”
“Sure, go ahead.”
“I came to propose peace, not to fight! But before I could explain, I was captured…”
“Ah, well… want some hamburg steak?”
“…I’ll have some.”
Even after that, the war between the Demon Lord’s army and humanity continued, with occasional visits from heroines like Katiana.
But for me, nothing changed.
As the losing jail guard, I’ll keep running this dungeon and treating the captured heroines to delicious meals.
And that’s fine by me.
The End.
