Chapter 19: The Losing Jail Guard Mentions a Legendary Weapon
I found myself instinctively wary of the beautiful woman in front of me.
I couldn’t count how many times I’d failed miserably using the stones I bought from her.
“Oh? Lugus-suss, do you know her?”
“N-No, this is actually my first time meeting her… in person.”
“Oh my~. Calling me the Merchant of Death on our first meeting is so mean~. I run my business with honesty and integrity~.”
She might sound sweet and gentle, but to me, Nea was still terrifying.
I’d nearly maxed out my credit card thanks to her more than a few times.
While I stood frozen, Elette walked right up to Nea.
“Well now, we saved you from those bandits. Isn’t there some sort of reward for that?”
“Huh? Um, well~…”
“Miss Elette, wait—”
“What is it, Lugus-suss? We’re in a hurry. We need to use whatever resources we can get our hands on.”
“I mean, you’re not wrong, but…”
“I’m simply asking her to repay the debt she owes us for saving her. Come on, merchant girl. Time to pay up.”
Elette demanded compensation from Nea.
Nea hesitated but, since we had saved her, she reluctantly handed over a bag of coins.
But Elette wasn’t satisfied with that.
“What’s this supposed to be?”
“Uh, it’s money, you know~…”
“Don’t you have anything else? Something rare, like valuable ores? Give me something that sparks my interest.”
“Ehh~!?”
At this point, Elette was acting more like a bandit than the actual bandits.
In the end, Nea, on the verge of tears, handed over a bunch of supplies, food, and water to Elette.
Her merchant cart was loaded with all sorts of goods, and Elette ended up taking everything she could carry.
“Waaaaa!! At this point, it would’ve been better if the bandits robbed me~!!”
“Uh, don’t you think you’re going a bit overboard…?”
“This is your fault, Lugus-suss.”
“Huh!? Why me!?”
“You said something that piqued my curiosity. You mentioned ‘missiles’ and ‘gatling guns,’ remember? Now hurry up and explain what they are.”
Elette’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
Even though we were pressed for time, I couldn’t withstand the intense pressure from her, so I quickly gave her a rundown of what those weapons were.
“Hmm, hmm, I see, I see! Ah, this is amazing! You really are the best, Lugus-suss! Teaching me about a world I don’t know —you’re truly the best!!”
“Uh, I get it, but how about we save Miss Katiana first before you start making—”
“What are you talking about!! Modifying the ‘Prototype Ultimate Invincible Golem Mark 58 Super’ is essential for rescuing Katia-something!! Now, come on!! Tell me more!!”
“M-More? I mean, I already explained missiles and gatling guns—”
“You really know how to tease, don’t you!? I know you have even better ideas hidden away!! Hurry!! Tell me!!”
The usually calm and composed Elette was now wide-eyed and wild, practically in my face.
“M-Master, this human is seriously dangerous!! Are you sure we can rely on her!?”
“Uh, w-well…”
At this rate, we wouldn’t be able to go help Katiana.
But Elette wasn’t wrong —modifying the golem could make the rescue way more certain.
After agonizing over it, I finally made a decision—
“Multi-legs, crawler tracks, hovering legs, shoulder cannons, pile bunkers, beam sabers…”
“!?”
“Funnels, a giant death ray, and… a transformation mode?”
“O-Oh! I’m hearing even more incredible things!!”
Sure, I really wanted to go save Katiana right now.
But at the same time, I was curious to see just how far Elette could take these ideas.
“…I don’t get any of this, so I’m going to finish off the bandits we let go earlier.”
“Wait, huh? You’re leaving me alone in this situation~!?”
“Don’t talk to me so casually.”
Apparently, Laecia got bored and decided to go bandit hunting.
Meanwhile, Elette pulled out a bunch of tools and equipment from the storage compartment inside the ‘Prototype Ultimate Invincible Golem Mark 58 Super’ and started making modifications.
That’s when we hit a huge problem.
It was obvious, really —we didn’t have nearly enough materials to build the weapons and parts I’d described.
“Ugh! We’re completely out of materials!! We need more metal!! We need tons of it!! Nea, was it!? Give us more supplies!!”
“Whaaat~!? If I give you more, I’ll go bankrupt~!!”
“I don’t care!! I need to bring every one of Lugus-suss’s ideas to life!!”
This wasn’t the Elette I knew anymore.
Sure, I’d been spouting off about ridiculous dream weapons, but I never thought Elette would go this off the rails.
But Nea’s cart was empty. She had no more supplies to give.
Both Nea and Elette stood there, looking defeated for different reasons.
And right at that moment…
“Look, Master!! The bandits I took care of had a huge stash of treasure!!”
Laecia returned, absolutely thrilled, carrying bags stuffed with gold coins.
And not just one or two bags.
She brought dozens of bags overflowing with coins —bags full of precious metal.
“Perfect. Let’s melt it all down.”
“““Eh!?”””
Elette immediately started melting down what was essentially a fortune in gold coins.
Even I was stunned by this.
The next day, a superweapon that should never exist in this world was born.
