Chapter 09: The Losing Jail Guard Makes Karaage
“Headshot!! Headshot!! Flying birds!! Running boars!! Headshot!!”
I was out in the forest, hunting monsters with a level of energy I didn’t even understand.
Normally, with my skill, I’d be lucky to take down one or two bird-type monsters. But this time, I managed to bag over a dozen.
It had to be thanks to Elette’s slingshot and her crazy potion.
One by one, I nailed each target with perfect headshots.
“Tonight’s Karaage!! We’re having Karaage!! This is gonna be so good!! AHAHAHAHAHA!!”
Dragging my haul of monsters behind me, I headed straight for the castle’s kitchen.
Laughing like a maniac, I swung my knife around, breaking down the monsters into neat cuts. My hands moved with a speed and precision that surprised even me.
In no time, the prep work was done.
“Hey, what’s up with that guy?”
“That’s the dude who slapped the Demon Lord and smashed the thing she liked. He’s nuts.”
“Is he strong? He doesn’t look like much.”
“His brain’s fried. Look at him waving that knife around like a lunatic.”
“Yikes. Let’s stay away.”
Some demons passing by the kitchen peeked in, whispering to each other.
I grinned and waved them over with the knife still in my hand.
“Kehehe, I’ll let you guys try some Karaage. It’s so good, it’ll send you flying.”
““W-We’re sorry!!””
“Huh? Where are you all going?”
I was just trying to give them some Karaage…
Then I realized something.
My clothes were covered in red from butchering all those monsters.
And I was holding a knife.
Laughing while chopping up animals… Yeah, that’s straight out of a horror movie.
“…Huh. I’m suddenly feeling a lot calmer.”
I guess the effect of Elette’s potion finally wore off, and my mood went back to normal.
I cut the meat into bite-sized pieces, marinated it in a mix of soy sauce and garlic, then coated it in flour and fried it.
I even double-fried it, so it had to taste amazing.
“What are you making over there?”
“Karaage. Wait… Demon Lord?!”
I turned around, and there stood Lucifelle in the kitchen, watching the frying pan with interest.
“When did you get here?”
“I was walking by and caught a whiff of something delicious. So, what is this ‘Karaage’?”
“Karaage is, well, Karaage. You fry it until it’s nice and crispy. It’s good.”
“…Hmph. I shall taste it—”
Lucifelle reached for a piece of Karaage on the plate.
I slapped her hand away.
“Ow! W-What are you doing?!”
“No sneaking bites before it’s ready. And no grabbing with your hands —that’s bad manners.”
“D-Don’t order me around! Who do you think you are?!”
“Just a jail guard.”
“Why are you so confident?! Stop defying me! I’ll have you executed!!”
“Oh really? You sure you wanna say that? You won’t get to eat any more sweets if you do.”
“!? T-That would be terrible!!”
Lucifelle’s reaction was so easy to read, it was actually kind of cute.
“Well, there’s enough to go around, so you can have one piece.”
“R-Really?! Muhuhu, you do understand me after all!”
“Make sure to use a fork or chopsticks, okay?”
“I know that!”
Lucifelle grabbed a fork from the cupboard and speared a piece of Karaage, popping it into her mouth.
It was still hot.
The moment it touched her tongue, she let out a muffled cry, “Afu!?”
“Hafu, ahf, mmph… Gulp. W-What is this?! It’s all juicy!! Something amazing just exploded in my mouth!!”
“Your vocabulary just gave up.”
Well, considering the usual food in this place, it must taste extra good.
“Hey!! I want to give some to Mother, so hand over a few pieces!!”
“Got it. Just grab a plate and take as much as you want.”
“Muhuhu, Mother will love this!!”
Lucifelle piled a mountain of Karaage onto a plate and left the kitchen.
…No way Marisela can eat all of that.
I took the rest of the Karaage down to the dungeon.
“Lunchtime! We’re having Karaage today.”
“Hm? What’s this? It smells amazing.”
“Karaage? I’ve never heard of it, but that smell is making me hungry.”
Katiana and Elette took a bite.
My senior, now a committed vegetarian, politely declined.
“This… this is delicious!! What is this?!”
“Hmm. You coated the meat in flour and fried it in a lot of hot oil, right? This is pretty tasty.”
They both seemed to love it. Mission accomplished.
“But… there’s too much. I don’t think I can finish this…”
“Yeah… I might’ve gotten a little carried away.”
“It would be such a waste to let all this go bad. Isn’t there a way to preserve it?”
“Oh, I have an idea! Miss Elette, can I borrow your ear for a sec?”
“What’s up?”
I leaned in and whispered my idea to Elette.
Her eyes immediately lit up with excitement.
“Think you can make it?”
“Of course I can. I see —something like that would definitely be useful. Leave it to me. I’ll have it ready by tomorrow.”
“Wow, that’s fast.”
I couldn’t wait for tomorrow.
Oh, and as for the leftover Karaage, I gave it to Lucifelle, who happily devoured it all.
Truly, a Demon Lord.
Her ability to pack away that much Karaage is kind of terrifying.
