Chapter 04: The Losing Jail Guard Gets Summoned by the Demon Lord’s Mother
“Lugus, you’ve been called.”
“Huh, me?”
It was the day after I slapped Lucifelle.
My orc senior said this while I was still in the cell next to Katiana’s.
Who on earth would want to meet me?
My parents were already dead, and I didn’t have any friends.
Hey, don’t call me a loner.
“Who is it?”
“I can’t say… But it’s someone really important.”
“Someone important?”
Puzzled by my senior’s vague answer, I was shackled and led through the Demon Lord’s castle.
“Hey, is that the guy who slapped the Demon Lord?”
“Slapped? I heard he stomped on her face and kicked her.”
“Ha! No way, that’s gotta be a lie.”
“Look at him. He’s just a weak-looking low-rank demon. The Demon Lord could squash him easily.”
“What an idiot. No one defies the Demon Lord and lives to tell the tale.”
As I walked, various demons stared at me.
Some eyes were filled with disdain, like I was a fool who defied a superior. Some looked at me with fear, others with mocking amusement.
It seemed I’d become famous overnight.
“We’re here.”
“This place is…”
My senior stopped in front of a room located in the upper floors of the Demon Lord’s castle.
I knew exactly who was behind this door.
It wasn’t from game knowledge —anyone who worked in this castle knew who she was.
With a nudge from my senior, I stepped inside.
“Uh… e-excuse me.”
“Oh my, you actually came.”
“Uh…”
The first thing I saw upon entering the room was a large bed.
On that bed lay a woman.
She was so beautiful that I almost sighed out loud.
Her long, violet hair spread out over the sheets, and her amethyst-colored eyes stared directly at me.
A small beauty mark beneath her eye made her even more striking.
It was hard to tell with her lying down, but she was incredibly tall.
She had to be at least 180 centimeters.
But what drew my attention most were her assets.
Her waist was perfectly slender, and her thighs were thick and curvy.
She wore a thin, sheer nightgown that radiated an overwhelming sensuality.
“Unfortunately, I can’t move right now. Could you come closer to the bed?”
With a warm smile, she raised her upper body slightly and gestured for me to approach.
But I didn’t move. Or rather, I couldn’t move.
Even though remembering my past life made me more human-like mentally, I was still a demon.
And my instincts screamed the truth:
This woman was on a whole different level, far beyond Lucifelle.
“…Am I frightening you?”
“…fuu…haa… No, I’m okay.”
I took a deep breath and walked over to stand beside the bed where the beautiful woman lay.
“Do you know who I am?”
“Y-Yes. You’re Lady Marisela, the former Demon Lord and mother of the current Demon Lord, Lucifelle.”
“Ufufu, that’s correct, Lugus♡”
The woman—Marisela—smiled brightly and gave me a playful wink.
That cute smile of hers should be illegal.
“So, um… what did you need from me?”
Marisela was the previous Demon Lord.
In other words, she was the one who held the throne before Lucifelle.
She didn’t appear in the game.
In the story, she was defeated by Lucifelle in the battle for the throne and imprisoned somewhere in the Demon Lord’s castle.
Since there were no follow-up scenes with her, fans joked that the developers had forgotten about her.
But now, she had called for me.
There was only one reason for that. Nothing else made sense.
“I heard you slapped Lucifelle’s cheek?”
“…Yeah.”
I nodded quietly.
In demon society, strength is everything, but they also value their children deeply.
The stronger the demon, the stronger this tendency. After all, their children might one day surpass them.
That’s exactly what happened with Lucifelle. She defeated Marisela and took the throne, causing Marisela to lose her position.
So, to Marisela, I was just a lowlife who had dared to hit her precious daughter.
Yep, I’m done for. Completely done for.
“You’re quite wonderful, aren’t you?”
“…Huh?”
“I know the whole story. You scolded my daughter, didn’t you?”
I was still confused, trying to process her words, but Marisela just giggled softly.
“Did you really think I’d personally execute you?”
“Uh… yeah…”
“I wouldn’t do that. Finally, someone has come along who truly sees her.”
“W-What do you mean?”
I tilted my head, baffled by Marisela’s pleased expression.
She started speaking calmly, her voice gentle.
“My daughter is strong. Strong enough to defeat me head-on. At first, I was proud and happy.”
“I-I see…”
“…But then I realized something.”
“Realized what?”
“The moment she became the Demon Lord, I was left all alone. As if being a loser made me worthless, everyone stopped looking at me.”
“T-That’s…”
In demon society, that’s just how things work.
Winners are respected above all, but losers are looked down on.
Not even a former Demon Lord is an exception.
“Lucifelle was praised and adored, and it made her arrogant. She even went so far as to declare war on the human nations.”
Oh, right.
The reason the heroines come to the Demon Lord’s castle to take Lucifelle down is because she started a war with the human nations.
And it wasn’t exactly a fair fight —she took them by surprise.
The humans, in response, formed an alliance to defend themselves against the stronger demons.
“Of course, I scolded her many times. But maybe because she’s so much like I used to be, she wouldn’t listen.”
“…So you were a bit rebellious in your youth, huh?”
“Ufufu. Yes, believe it or not, I used to be quite the troublemaker.”
Marisela laughed at my comment.
Oh no. She’s adorable. I can’t help but want to support her.
“…Anyway, back to the point. My daughter’s strength keeps everyone in line, but it also makes her lonely. For now, she’s fine. But if she ever loses, like I did…”
“…Yeah, no one will stand by her. That’s just how demons are.”
“Exactly. That’s why I have a favor to ask.”
Marisela bowed her head to me.
“Lugus, would you consider being my daughter’s friend? If she ever loses, could you be there to protect her?”
“…Hmm.”
I answered immediately.
“Nope, that’s way too much for me. Can’t do it.”
“…Oh?”
“I’m just a lowly jail guard, and I already pissed off Lady Lucifelle. If I try to be her friend, she’ll probably kill me on the spot.”
“That’s fine. I’ll set things up properly for you.”
“B-But, even so…”
I mean, I’m just a minor villain destined to lose. Why on earth should I become friends with the final boss?
While I was struggling to respond, Marisela smiled.
“That’s too bad. I was planning to convince Lucifelle to cancel your execution.”
“Wait, what?! That’s dirty! You’re blackmailing me?!”
“Ufufu. I may not be able to command anyone with strength anymore, but I still have my ways.”
“Ugh…”
Turns out Marisela was far more cunning than I realized.
“Why me, though? I’m sure there are others you could ask.”
“…Normally, no one dares defy the strongest, Lucifelle. But you did. You weren’t afraid to scold her and give her a lecture. As far as I know, the only people who’ve ever done that are my late husband and you.”
Her husband? The previous Demon Lord’s consort?
Well, she does have a daughter, so it makes sense she had a husband… but I couldn’t recall who he was.
He didn’t appear in the game, and if I’d heard of him, he wasn’t famous.
…No, I need to stop overthinking this.
“Just to be clear, you’re really going to cancel my execution, right?”
“Yes, I promise. Lucifelle’s mood improves quickly when she gets a rare weapon as a gift.”
“Isn’t that kind of thing the reason Lady Lucifelle became so spoiled, Lady Marisela?”
Marisela just smiled warmly at my comment, saying nothing.
And so, I managed to avoid execution.
