Chapter 03: The Losing Jail Guard Gives a Lecture
““Huh?””
Katiana and Lucifelle’s voices overlapped in confusion.
Lucifelle looked stunned, as if she couldn’t believe what had just happened.
A moment later, she snapped out of it and started shouting at me.
“Y-You!! Do you even realize what you’ve just done!?”
“You… you wasted food…”
“Food? What about food—”
“DON’T WASTE IT!!!!!”
“Eep!?”
Lucifelle flinched, her whole body trembling at my shout.
Lecture time had begun.
“There’s a saying that seven gods live in each grain of rice. And you stomped on it and kicked it away? That’s beyond disrespectful!”
“Seven gods in rice? I-I’ve never heard of such nonsense!”
“Shut up, you fool!! I’m not done talking, so listen quietly!!”
“Y-Yes!?”
I silenced the Demon Lord and continued my lecture.
“The meat and vegetables in that stir-fry took time and effort from livestock farmers and vegetable growers. And you—”
“Hmph! Those are jobs done by the lowest of low-ranking demons! Why should I, the strongest of all, care if I step on that!?”
“Haah…”
I let out a deep sigh.
Honestly, from a demon’s perspective, Lucifelle hadn’t done anything wrong.
“So?”
“…Huh?”
“Everything you said, Demon Lord, isn’t exactly wrong. But… so what?”
“S-So what…?”
“Why did you need to stomp on it? Putting down others just to show off your strength—that’s exactly what low-level losers do.”
“!? Y-You dare call me, the Demon Lord, a low-level loser!?”
Lucifelle’s face turned bright red.
But I wasn’t done yet. I hadn’t even gotten to the main point.
I needed to speak before she could interrupt.
“And most importantly—”
“T-There’s more!?”
“I can’t forgive you for ruining the stir-fry I made!! Let me smack you again! This time with my fist!!”
“Eeep!?”
When I raised my fist, Lucifelle crouched down, covering her head with both hands.
…Seeing her like that snapped me back to reality.
“Demon Lord.”
“W-What now!?”
“…Demon Lord, I got carried away and slapped you. I apologize for that.”
I knelt down and bowed my head.
Lucifelle seemed to remember her status as the Demon Lord.
She straightened up, towering over me with her arms crossed.
Her eyes still burned with anger as she glared down at me.
“It’s too late to apologize now!! For the crime of defying me, I sentence you to death!! You’re definitely getting executed!!”
Death penalty. So that’s how it is.
If I’m going to be killed anyway, I might as well say what I want to say.
“Demon Lord, let me say one thing.”
“Hmph. Your final words, then?”
“Yeah, I guess you could call it that… Demon Lord, you’re only strong.”
“…What do you mean by that?”
I knew what was going to happen to Lucifelle.
I’d seen how she loses to the heroines and what comes after.
That’s why I could say this with confidence.
“Have you ever thought about what happens if you lose?”
“I will never lose to anyone!!”
“Let’s say you did. If you were defeated, all the demons who follow you would rise up against you.”
“R-Rise up? There’s no way that would happen…”
“Are you sure about that? You eliminate anyone who displeases you, and you torture those who defy you just for fun. Let me be blunt: if you lose even once —no, even if you don’t lose —you have no real allies.”
After Lucifelle loses to the heroines, her own followers betray her.
And then, she suffers horribly.
Not just at the hands of the humans she tormented, but also from her own subordinates, like the orcs and goblins.
No one will step up to save her.
“If I don’t lose, everything will be fine!!”
“You’re going to lose someday. After all, you defeated the previous Demon Lord, who was said to be the strongest, to take the throne.”
“…”
Lucifelle trembled and fell silent at my words.
“…ngh.”
“Huh?”
“Shut up, shut up, shut up!! I will never lose!! As long as I don’t lose, everything will be fine!! Waaaah!! I’m going to tell my mother!!”
“Uh…”
Lucifelle ran off, tears streaming down her face.
She tripped along the way, but quickly got back up and kept running.
Watching her go, I sighed and unlocked the cell next to Katiana’s. Then, I stepped inside and slumped down.
“My life is over.”
I messed up.
Slapping her was bad enough, but what I said afterward made it worse.
Wait, maybe it’s fine? I did apologize for the slap, right?
Yeah, let’s go with that. It’s fine. …Except it probably isn’t. I’m probably getting executed tomorrow.
I should’ve kept that voucher for Lady Quina to myself instead of giving it to my senior.
As I hugged my knees in the cell, a voice called out from the neighboring cell.
It was Katiana.
“W-What are you doing!? Slapping the Demon Lord like that! And why did you lock yourself in a cell!?”
“I’ll probably only be here for tonight, so let’s be good neighbors!”
“Why are you so cheerful about this!?”
“When humans hit rock bottom, sometimes they just go wild.”
“You’re a demon, though?”
Katiana’s words made me realize something.
“Haha! Oh yeah! I forgot!”
“How do you forget that? Honestly, you don’t seem like a demon at all. It feels like I’m dealing with a hopeless human.”
“Actually, I was a human in my past life. I just remembered that yesterday.”
“…Haha… That’s ridiculous. You should work on your jokes.”
Katiana laughed.
I was probably going to be executed tomorrow, but at least I got to see a beautiful girl smile before the end.
Or so I thought…
“Hey, I heard you slapped Lucifelle’s cheek?”
“…Y-Yeah.”
I had just been summoned by Lucifelle’s mother, a character who didn’t even appear in the game.
