Chapter 33 : Search and Investigation [1]
“I apologize, but I’m not very familiar with the children. I’m afraid I can’t provide the information you’re looking for.”
The investigation under the Kingdom’s Knight Order had commenced.
Initially, inquiries were directed towards those likely connected — families and acquaintances of the kidnapped individuals, as well as their neighbors.
Despite this, no significant information was found, leading them to approach even unrelated individuals.
“Ah… I see. Thank you for your cooperation.”
Sophia bowed her head to the middle-aged woman.
Unlike Alvin’s team, Sophia and her group from the Fourth Knight Order were currently searching the eastern region.
The Royal Knight Order took the lead in identifying suspicious areas, while Sophia’s team of Academy Knights mainly conducted interviews.
This had been going on for hours, and the lack of promising information was beginning to take its toll on them.
Sophia’s initial enthusiasm had quietly waned.
“Sophia, how did it go over there?”
Cecil, who was working alongside her, waved as she approached.
“I’m sorry, no luck again…”
“Haha, it can’t be helped… though I shouldn’t say that. Even the Royal Knight Order hasn’t found any leads yet. Don’t get too discouraged, okay?”
Cecil gently patted Sophia’s head, trying to lift her spirits.
Feeling a bit better, Sophia looked at Cecil with kind eyes, seeing her almost like an elder sister, perhaps because Cecil also had a younger brother, Alvin. She even thought Cecil resembled Layla a bit.
“Y-yes, you’re right! If we give up now, we won’t be able to save the kidnapped children!”
“That’s the spirit!”
“Let’s find those kids quickly!”
“Hmm… That way I can go on a date with Al-kun sooner huh.”
“I didn’t say that.”
But Sophia couldn’t help but think that Cecil and Layla were completely different.
“Grr…! We need to solve this kidnapping case quickly so I can spend time with Al-kun!”
“Haha…”
Sophia felt a bit uneasy about Cecil’s strong attachment to her brother. Although she knew Cecil was kind-hearted, her motivations seemed slightly off.
“But it’s still puzzling,” Cecil said, slapping her cheeks to energize herself before continuing.
“You mean the ‘spirited away’ incidents?”
“Exactly. Why target only blond children?”
Now that it was mentioned, it did seem strange.
If they intended to sell the children as slaves, targeting older youths would be more profitable. Why limit it to children? And only blond ones at that?
Often, solving a case involves understanding the perpetrator’s motive. With no clues in sight, they hoped reverse-engineering from the motive might help, but this time, the reason remained elusive.
“Now that I think about it, we’re blond too.”
“Oh, right?! Wh-what should we do?! I just realized!”
“I’m safe because Al-kun is always around me, but Sophia, you might be in danger. Maybe you should ask Layla to stay with you?”
“Um… I’m sorry, but I’ll do that.”
“Since there’s a risk of danger, Layla wouldn’t refuse!”
Sophia knew Layla liked her, and seeing how close they were, Layla wouldn’t turn a blind eye if a friend was in danger. Cecil reassured Sophia with another pat on the head.
“Besides, we don’t even know how the kidnappings happen, so we can’t exactly prepare…”
“The children disappear while asleep, but how does no one notice? Magic isn’t that convenient, and someone would spot them through the windows.”
In response to the recent ‘spirited away’ incidents, the Royal Knight Order had enforced a night-time curfew. Patrols by knights and guards were also increased at night, so someone carrying off a child should be noticed. Yet, there were no such reports — how were the children being taken?
Cecil, deep in thought, crossed her arms and furrowed her brow.
“The longer this goes on, the more dangerous it becomes for the children. We need to find them soon…”
Seeing Cecil’s troubled expression, Sophia took out a bag of cookies from her pocket.
“I may not be very helpful… but would you like a cookie? I heard sweet things can help you think faster!”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes! I got these at a market in the capital recently, and they’re really delicious!”
Cecil took a cookie from the bag and, after one bite, her eyes sparkled.
“Mmm! Delicious!”
“Right? They’re really good!”
“I should buy some to share with Al-kun. He’d love them!”
“Hehe, let’s work hard then!”
Both of them smiled, their earlier despair nowhere in sight. They had to give it their all for the kidnapped children. With renewed determination, they resumed their search.
